25.01.2022 Bisalloy face and reinforced cross bars, hopefully these inclusion plates last thrice as long as previous sets. Time to slot some topsoil!

20.01.2022 Ripping barley stubble before lupins at 600mm. Inclusion plates slotting stubble and topsoil to 450mm in wet conditions. Lupins looks excellent even after an extremely dry autumn-winter. Unripped test strip in photo now extremely stressed despite similar germinations.

13.01.2022 Test strips in paddock showing up opportunity cost of hard pan in Zen wheat sown 30th April. 500mm ripped and topsoil slotted have between 2-2.5 times tiller counts than those without. Both will need more rain, especially the many plants with heads coming out!

13.01.2022 Two very different results, only difference being 20mm of rainfall. Both paddocks ripped to 500mm with topsoil slotting and planted to Canola. Avg Apr-Jul rainfall 165mm. LHS 75mm (Decile 1), biggest event 12mm April 23. GT53 sown at 0.9kg/ha. RHS 55mm (Decile 0), biggest event 5mm July 2. GT41 sown at 1.6kg/ha.

04.01.2022 Result on this wheat test strip was 2.3t/ha in the ripped section and 1.7t/ha in the unripped strip alongside. The yield difference was greatest in poorer sand, and less in areas where there was clay under sand. We think a less than ideal plant establishment prevented a bigger response, so are working on a new crumble roller design to leave a better seed bed.

02.01.2022 Have chemical fallow in this year and looking to make sure next years crop can make the most of it? Perhaps later winter is the perfect time to incorporate lime/gypsum, germinate weeds or improve drainage by deep ripping before summer. Image credit Sheahan Pathan - DAFWA
