25.01.2022 Ria and Amy removing a big rock. We used lots of mechanics to move a rock much heavier than we can lift. The engineering hat fits pretty well. Had we spent more time wearing the property manager's hat we would have had tractor access. @ Deep End Farm

24.01.2022 We'll be at Street Eats Franko tomorrow night (Friday) from 4pm with Crayfish Bao (and pork, beef and vegan).

24.01.2022 120 day aged rib roast from @huon_valley_meat_company over fire.

24.01.2022 Spirit competing with pigs for their dinner.

23.01.2022 Natural ecosystems are rich in life, retain water and soil and store them all long term. Man made constructs: not so much. We think cover crops might be a big part of making Deep End Farm behave like an ecosystem. And we hope the community will get on board so we have people to collaborate with.

22.01.2022 About a month from now we're all going to start wishing it wasn't so dry and that we had more water. Right now we're all draining water off our properties as fast as we can. The first step has to be to retain more water from now for use then. #swales #deependwater

21.01.2022 For 3 years now we've been managing pigs with tape fences and rolls of chicken wire. We want to be able to move them reliably to improve pig happiness, land quality and the quality of our pork. This is our first attempt at a more reliable system. This paddock is for weaning pigs. The fences are two wire electrics with very low chicken wire backing and mesh doors. The houses are built from sleepers, permanent (not moveable) and hopefully quite long lasting. There are pig waterers on the outside walls of the shed. Lots of teathing problems but I'm going to declare it a win or at least a step in the right direction. V2 is coming soon.

20.01.2022 We'll be at Farm Gate Market tomorrow, Sunday 12 with bao zi (Taiwanese Steamed Buns). We're coming out of hibernation on our farm. (Our last Farmgate market as a vendor was Aug 26, 2018!!). Really looking forward to catching up with friends and customers.

20.01.2022 Today we’re at Farm Gate Market with Taiwanese steamed buns. We have a special duck bao zi in addition to our normal menu.

20.01.2022 We'd like to start decorating our market stand with seasonal produce from our farm. #deependproduce

19.01.2022 An ugly, but very important photo. The boundary of the shed is clear and drained. We won't be running the water to the road, we'll be spreading it and using it to make the property more vibrant. #deependshed #deependwater

19.01.2022 We're having a farm tour. On Sat, Nov 21 at 3PM Huon Producers' Network is hosting a get together and property tour. Dave and Cassandra will show you the why, what and how of building our small sustainable property. We'll talk about earthworks, water, soil, trees, growing plant, raising animals and creating a lifestyle around these things. There will be plenty of knowledgeable HPN people on hand so hopefully we'll all learn something. This is how we got started. We want to give you some ideas of what works and what doesn't work. In our experience even one good idea pays for itself many times over in money and time. And hopefully, it will be fun too.

19.01.2022 Two large pans of the type used to make pan fried bao zi and dumplings. Not sure if we'll use them at market or keep them for home activities. I guess we'll need to do some test cooking at #geevestonfeast and on the farm.

18.01.2022 In order to renovate our shed we'll need timber. The first of it is milled and ready to be stacked and seasoned. Its a long path that must be walked step by step, but we're very happy to be using wood from our property and local people to help with the work.

18.01.2022 We love spring on the farm.

17.01.2022 Last year we thinned the trees in the wood lot. We got timber to build our shed, more room for the good trees to grow in and greatly increased grass growth due to better sunlight. Now the piggies are going in. They’ll be protected from summer heat and hopefully remove some of the scrub under the trees. #silvopasture here we come! #deependpigs #deependanimals

17.01.2022 The shed is coming along nicely. #deependbarn #shed

17.01.2022 We've just ordered 430 trees from Nationwide Trees for 2021's tree day (it will be tree week or more this time). We also have a plan to acquire some other trees; mostly nitrogen fixing trees and perhaps some chestnuts and persimmon. Now we're thinking hard about how to efficiently plant them. Last year's trees are growing well; but grass, water and soil prep could all be improved I think. I'm hoping that this year we'll have an improved recipe for planting trees to increase organic matter, biodiversity and comfort at Deep End Farm.

16.01.2022 Party finished at 5AM. Now we’re having bacon and egg dosa for breakfast

16.01.2022 It all starts with water. We want to build #swales to slow it's progress across our land. Ned and Dave are marking out the swales with a laser Level this week. There will be four swales, on contour with carefully controlled overflow points. #deependwater #deependshed

14.01.2022 I just watched Curiousity open the grain chute.

13.01.2022 We’re smoking bacon in the snow!

12.01.2022 We have cut down some trees. Here is part of the sorting process, trunks for timber (shed rebuild), limbs for poles and firewood, smaller wood for biochar, leaves and twigs for mulch. There is no burn pile. As things are, we can do a couple of trees a year sustainably, but we're going to plant a lot more trees this year. Its taken me some time to realise that planting and using trees is the most efficient pathway to building the health of the property.

11.01.2022 We’re hard at work getting ready for Street Eats Franko . Its starting again the Friday Nov 27th. Everybody we know is excited about its return. For us it means the start of summer, the start of food event season and less farm work and more food business. Its a return to normal, but also there is a strong component of acknowledgement that we are living in a different world. There will be book in advance tickets, sittings and attendance caps. Please take some time to familiari...se yourself with the new setup. Its not the same. Hats off to the organisers for what must be a huge task. They have recreated Franko with an acknowledgement of the changes to public safety responsibility to society and its inhabitants. For the last 8 months, we have enjoyed more time on the farm and struggled with the complete destruction of the food market business and our own business. We hope this can be the start of a return. We’ll be working hard to make it viable. Please remember the Deep End Farm rule: please maintain a distance of one cow between you and your neighbour.

09.01.2022 Shed property plans. Still back of envelope plan, but coming together. #deependshed #deependwater #deependanimals #geeveston

08.01.2022 The virus is knocking us for a loop, markets and revenues are gone for a while. We've restricted ourselves to our farm for now. Its awful, but we're super lucky! We've been trying to build a resilient system on our farm for times like these. Our mission is the same; undertake work that is good for the planet, good for our land and good for our community. With limited funds we'll be continuing to develop our shed into a hub for our regenerative farm project. We'll be building ...water management infrastructure (swales and organic matter in our soil). We'll be planting lots of trees. We might also start to sell food again, but only once we can figure out a responsible method that benefits the community. In the meantime everybody please stay safe, act responsibly and check on your friends and neighbours (they might be having a harder time than you).

07.01.2022 Yesterday was tree planting day at Deep End Farm. A bunch of friends came round. We had lots of bare rooted trees to put in. There were oak, ash, alder, maple, walnut, mulberry and others. We planted them on contour below the water management system and also in our pasture. Kachina, Ned (@wild.grove )and Cassandra cooked a lovely lunch for everyone. #huonvalley #trees #swale #permaculture #permaculturetasmania @ Deep End Farm

07.01.2022 The start of a search for a good quality table bird for our property. These are commercial broilers and I don't think they are the right variety to become part of our ecosystem. But they are a good first step for us. Maybe we'll get some ideas at the Huon Producers' Network chicken workshop. #deependanimals

06.01.2022 The pig comes out of the firebox. Best pork ever!

02.01.2022 Reforming a vege bed to be on contour. This area is probably the most advanced in terms of creating a microclimate on our property. We're facing SE, you can see manuka along the southern edge and the tagasaste along the windward, west is just peeking over my shoulder. We're going to make our first serious attempt at outdoor yacon in this bed.

01.01.2022 We cut down our banana plant. It’s everyone’s favourite Deep End Farm plant. So we are a bit nervous when we say don’t worry, it will sucker like crazy. The plan is to transplant them all over our garden. We’re hoping they’ll survive outside. Let’s have banana for breakfast next year. Failing that, we’ll eat curry off banana leaves. #deependgreenhouse

01.01.2022 Come on the farm tour tomorrow to see the progress of our spring project. We put in contour channels, planted trees and prepared grazing corridors. Now the trees are sprouting and there are cattle, pigs and chickens grazing there. https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/networking-afternoon-tea-an
