18.01.2022 We have a neoliberal capitalist system that individualizes us and our problems, pits us against each other, sees us as the problem, and buying more as a solutio...n. We’re never good enough, so we keep buying things to make ourselves feel better. There are huge resource issues in mental health services, and services have become more and more individualized. There are fewer community-focused projects and services. I was always passionate about collective community-type provisions, like therapeutic communities, which aren’t a panacea, and there are lots of problems with them too. But in the collective provision, people could support each other and create the context in which compassion could happen. It’s not that there is either compassion in the individual or compassion in society you can’t have one without the other. The problem with our current society is there’s all this talk about self-care and empathy. Still, it often boils down to buying more stuff for yourself Oh, you deserve it, you’re worth it! rather than a deeper sense of compassion which is about connecting with our own suffering and the suffering of others. We have a broader culture that doesn’t really want to know about people’s suffering. Of course, there is much more talk about mental health issues now, but we don’t really want to know the depths of people’s suffering. Until we’re able to do that as a society and as individuals, it’s very hard to create more compassionate contexts. It’s a big ask because I’m really asking for a change in society.

18.01.2022 Ballarat newspaper The Courier reported that a 32 year old man pleaded guilty to multiple counts of sexually abusing a little girl over several years. The abuse... started when she was seven years old. Children cannot have sex with adults. Sex requires consent and children cannot give consent, so it’s not sex. It’s rape, it’s child abuse, it’s sexual abuse, it’s any number of terms that accurately describe a crime. An act perpetrated on an innocent victim who was unable to defend themselves from the violence done to them, and who suffers years, possibly decades of trauma caused by an adult’s choice to commit that violence. That word choice is the key. Sex is a choice made by every person involved. Rape and abuse are a choice made only by the perpetrator. The victim has no choice. No child has ever chosen to be abused. No child has ever done anything that caused or incited abuse. No child has ever wanted to be abused. No child has ever been in any way responsible for abuses committed against them by adults. When the media, as it so persistently does, labels rape or sexual abuse of children as sex, we are weakening the public understanding of the seriousness and effect of such abuse. It’s ignorant, inaccurate and irresponsible reporting in any publication, but it is particularly repugnant in Ballarat, which was the centre of so much abuse of children by the clergy. FixedIt is an ongoing project to push back against the media’s constant erasure of violent men and blaming of innocent victims. 16.01.2022 Violence against women and girls is a human rights violation that’s been perpetuated for decades. It’s pervasive, but it’s not inevitable, unless we stay silent. Speak out, #orangetheworld & break the cycle of abuse during #16Days of Activism!

16.01.2022 Around the country there are about 600 children between the ages of ten and fourteen in prison. Over half of them are Indigenous. The ramifications of invasion... are still being felt due to systems which have set Indigenous youth up to fail. It's important to consider what January 26 actually marks, and in particular, how it has affected our children's opportunities to thrive.

15.01.2022 We can change our world for the better, not through the use of force, but by developing inner peace. It may feel like a huge task, but peace must be created by ...humanity, who are a collection of individuals. If one person creates inner peace within themselves and shares it with ten other people and each of them does the same we can imagine influencing all 7 billion human beings. Let that be our #PeaceDayChallenge See more
