25.01.2022 Do you have to quarantine on posting? Does the thought of this terrify you? Not so according to Katie who has kindly written a blog post on her experience in quarantining with 3 children under 5. ... From Katie... 'Supermarket orders are worth organising. My kids are like fruit bats, but we only get 1 fresh piece of fruit a day so that definitely went on our order. The meals only come between certain times and my kids are snack queens, so adding all their favourite snacks to the order made life easier. Then there was also the problem of the kids not liking what was served. ' Read more of Katie's tips for quarantining. https://dfa.org.au/2020/09/22/quarantine-2020-style/ #DefenceFamilies #DefenceLife #Quarantine2020 #Posting #QuarantineLife #FightClub #WineWasConsumed

16.01.2022 Did you catch our recent guest blog post by ADF partner Katie, who recently completed quarantine with three children under five? Oh... and a husband Here are a few more tips from Katie and you can read the full blog post here. https://dfa.org.au/2020/09/22/quarantine-2020-style/... More on posting during COVID-19 restrictions here https://dfa.org.au//27/postings-during-covid-19-restricti/ From Katie... Now that Ive survived quarantine, I feel seasoned enough to offer my suggestions to make life easier. 1. Up kids screen time - theres no medal for surviving without it and you aint going for sainthood. 2. Pack easy on the clothes, and heavy on the toys/activities. (Play-Doh, water painting, beading, colouring books ect). I found one new activity a day was something for them to look forward to. 3. Dont forget to pack some medicine. 4. Grocery order for snacks and extra fresh fruit. Meals are only served 3 times a day at certain times, and kids being kids wont always eat what they bring. Plus if your kids are like mine theyll need second breakfast, elevenses, etc. 5. Add some cleaning products to the list. Its always handy to have with little menacing fingers around. 6. Wine. 7. Cosmic Yoga is an awesome YouTube video for kids to follow along. 8. Try burn off some energy each day by building obstacle courses, doing workouts (HA!) and having dance parties. 9. Call the hotel and ask to borrow their vacuum - your floor is about to get gross. 10. Hide in the dishwasher when you need some peace and quiet. 11. Build them a fort with your sheets. 12. Take comfort in knowing theres minimal cooking/cleaning for the next 14 days. 13. Dedicate some time each day to give each other a sanity break. 14. Kids want 3 baths in one day? Give them 3 baths and cross an hour off your day. 15. Be aware your pants are going to feel real snug by the time you leave. 16. Some people say routine, I say be flexible. Routine would keep me sane but honestly, kids cant control how theyre feeling from being stuck inside and I found catering to their current needs made life a lot nicer. 17. Most importantly - when youre overwhelmed and cranky, remind yourself its not the kids fault youre in this situation!

05.01.2022 Mark served in the Australian Defence Force for an impressive 20 years in the medical corps. Since then has had to face another challenge managing his PTSD. T...o help in managing his PTSD, Mark applied for Australian Government Department of Veterans' Affairs' Psychiatric Assistance Dog Program and hes recently welcomed assistance dog Murphy into his life. When I first saw Murphy my heart melted, he instantly came up to me and interacted with me. He was gentle and immediately reacted to the affection I showed him, Mark shared. Training with Murphy has been absolutely fantastic. The guidance from my Smart Pups Assistance Dogs Trainer Dayle was easy to understand and implement and the great thing is, help is only one phone call away. The process with DVA has been fantastic from beginning to end, I will never forget the day Murphy appeared on my door step. The experience was exciting. We already know that assistance dogs bring a special type of joy to their owners and we have seen through our program that they can be a major asset in supporting veterans to manage their PTSD, alongside their management plan. For me an assistance dog has been a life changing event. My confidence is improving and I am able to manage my anxiety better at times. Murphy has helped me transition back into the community and has reduced my self-isolation, Mark said. Veterans who are thinking about applying for the program should stop thinking about it and talk with DVA now. The unconditional love and companionship an assistance dog gives cannot be found in any other therapy. The single biggest change Murphy has had on me is allowing me to say, I have PTSD but I will be ok. Thank you for your service Mark. #TYFYS #OurVeterans For more information on the Federal Governments Psychiatric Assistance Dog program, visit www.dva.gov.au/dogs

03.01.2022 Postings during COVID-19 restrictions. The news cycle is working faster than we can ever remember. Rules about where we are allowed to go and what we are allowed to do are changing all the time.... We do know of some families where postings have been cancelled, postponed, or are looking different to what was expected. Its safe to say nothing about 2020 has been expected. What happens if you are getting posted during this time? Firstly. Take the time to read the Toll Relocation guide so you understand the basics of how a posting works. https://tws.defenceuniform.movemaestro.com//TollTransition Then, do some research into where you are coming from and where you are going to. The advice will be different for each state or territory. Keep checking with your state or territory government website regularly or with their social media pages as information can change quickly. You may need to download a border declaration depending on where you are relocating to. You may be required to quarantine. The new PostingConnect platform will be available from 1st September 2020. From this date, eligible members will receive an email inviting them to use PostingConnect within a week of receiving their posting order. Open Arms provides free mental health and wellbeing support for current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force personnel and their families.
