24.01.2022 KAYAK INDUCTION: Three keen adventurers took off for a kayak induction in blustery conditions but when reaching the western mangroves all was calm. Rudy was Tony's instructor for which I was grateful as they spent the first 30 minutes paddling in circles. When approaching the beached cabin cruiser they rammed it at speed causing additional damage to the hull. All they could do was laugh! Negotiating the mangrove estuary was a jovial experience with the two old farts conti...nually laughing at their paddling non prowess. An eventful day with great mates & back at the Shed enjoyed a cup of coffee & a can of Coke. P.S. Rudy & I received an invitation to participate in seagrass monitoring on Wednesday 3rd December & we both accepted. Very sensitive study requiring kayaking skills at low tide taking photos & growth measurements. We consider the invitation an honour for the Shed. Happy Kayaking - Captain Ted. See more

24.01.2022 The Office of the Interim National Commissioner for Defence and Veteran Suicide Prevention contacted us and asked if they could visit Defence Shed Port Adelaide during their recent trip to Adelaide. At first we weren’t sure what to expect and then decided it would be a good opportunity to inform the Commissioner the personal issues our members face and the role of the Defence Shed. We were not disappointed, Dr Bernadette Boss CSC listened intently to our voices and the conversation was positive. Dr Boss showed us empathy and can relate to our issues and concerns. We must give her a non-judgemental chance to make the necessary changes we need in the Veteran community.

23.01.2022 This was the exciting part of our day

23.01.2022 SOLID EFFORT SHED VETERANS: Six veterans put in a solid performance completing the following: Housekeeping & reducing fire risk at rear- Rudy, Michael & Ted; Built an outboard motor stand - Smiler (Top Job); Preparing kayaks for Wednesday's paddle - Ted, Rudy & Michael;... Management preparations regarding future planning, audits & responsibilities - Francis, Sila & Izzy. Outstanding results & I thank every contributing Member for a Job Well Done! The cohesive effort by our wonderful Members is ensuring the Shed is heading in the right direction as many forwarded compliments suggest. KAYAKING: Wednesday 9/9/20 Garden Island: RIOT Kayaks will be in use for the first time this year. They are fast & a pleasure to paddle & master. Great Fun & please contact 0457814440 to reserve a speed machine. Captain Ted. See more

22.01.2022 Have a crack. Past members have won gold at Invictus. You can do anything you put your mind to. #defenceshed

22.01.2022 KAYAKING DEFENCE SHED 14/11/20 Nice quiet paddle today in perfect weather conditions. Just myself and Ted decided to go out on the water and have a good look at the shipwrecks at North Arm passage at super low tide. Did not disappoint, the true size of these wrecks was on show for us to enjoy. Another bonus was a huge benefit to increase our fitness levels. Awesome day sightseeing and being active. Also a quick mention for this coming Monday 16/11 for another Recreational Bike Ride for those interested coming along, meet at Shed at 0930

19.01.2022 The agenda has been emailed for our upcoming AGM to committee members.

19.01.2022 KAYAKING GARDEN ISLAND 13-2-21: Four of the finest Shed Members took off for a kayak in somewhat windy & blustery conditions with a guest from the British Army with the nickname of "Aussie", who stated that he & wife will definitely become Members next week. 'Aussie' thoroughly enjoyed the kayak & stated that the camaraderie he experienced was outstanding. What more can be said when spending quality time with Franco, Rudy & Ted - Top Fellas! Only saw one dolphin that surface...d adjacent to Aussie's & Ted's kayak & after surfacing a number of times decided to continue on his fishing expedition. A great day keeping fit with quality veterans & finishing the day enjoying a BBQ cooked by Michael who is fast becoming a good cook. Observation: Franco was observed doing figure eights stating that he does not use the rudder & prefers the paddle option. With the rudder set in one direction, the kayak will travel as per the set rudder making paddling extremely frustrating. In Franco's defence, he is a veteran 'grunt' & the technicalities of seamanship may have eluded him. Capt Ted See more

19.01.2022 HOUSEKEEPING - PLANTER TRAYS RELOCATION - IMPROVING OUTDOOR COMFORT 2-9-20: Rudy & Ted put in a praiseworthy performance in upgrading the aesthetics, outdoor comfort & general housekeeping at the Shed. Looking Good! A big Thank You to the Company that carried out a household rubbish pick-up at the shed allowing us to get rid of a 2-metre amount of excess material. Big Help! Francis & Izzy again excelled in providing lunch with toasted sandwiches that were appreciated. Kayaking: Saturday, a decision will be made in consultation regarding which days are most suitable for kayaking in the following week. The weather is looking fantastic & if interested please contact me on 0457814440 to book a kayak. Looking forward to seeing you. Captain Ted.

19.01.2022 RECREATIONAL BIKE RIDE ("Tour de Shed") 13/11/20. Another great turn out by our Shed members and perfect weather for today's ride along the beach. Special mention for Franko who joined us today on his first ride, onya mate you rode well. We all completed around 20 km's riding to North Haven and back. There was a pit stop at the Beach Haven Cafe where we enjoyed great coffee and a salvo of good ol banter. Veterans enjoying themselves and getting active is what the Defence Shed is all about. Watch our FB page for upcoming events and the Shed will always greet with a warm welcome any Veterans and 1st responders who wish to participate in the Defence Sheds activities. PS, Franko had something going on in his lycra nicks in the rear, see photo, lol. Well done to all who rode today and we'll grind the gears again soon

18.01.2022 #FlyingActivity: RAAF Base Townsville, Qld. From 1-16 Oct we'll have some Super Hornets up around Townsville. All flying activity is subject to change at short notice, more details: http://bit.ly/AFFlyingActivity #AusAirForce

18.01.2022 KAYAKING: IDEAL WEATHER - DOLPHINS - FAMILIES. A 3.5-hour kayak completed in glorious conditions with 10 members (2 families - 4 kids) enjoying the interaction with many dolphins. With the high tide, kayaking through the mangrove estuary proved a real challenge, with plenty of laughter as maneuvering through the canopy, low branches, etc saw a few strange paddle strokes go wrong resulting in encouraging banter from the team. All good fun & a perfect paddle technique teaching ...environment. Everyone enjoyed the paddle stating that they cannot wait for the next outing. Back at the Shed, we enjoyed a BBQ that was greatly appreciated. Note: Due to the high numbers of Members wishing to kayak we may have to limit numbers due to the carrying capacity of the trailer. Many thanks to Rudy for being the 'tail-end Charlie' ensuring the safety of all. Great fun with wonderful people is always a pleasure - veterans helping veterans. Kapitan Kayak. See more

17.01.2022 BUNNINGS WAREHOUSE WOODVILLE SAUSAGE SIZZLE 8/11/2020: Thirteen of the 'best of the best' people volunteered to man the BBQ resulting in a hugely successful day with plenty of fun & banter. The camaraderie of the group was outstanding with everyone pitching in making life easy for each other. My little Nissan Ute was full to the brim with Eskies & with diesel exhaust blowing from the exhaust stacks we finally made it to the site. Izzy & I cut up 30 kg of onions & the Ute's b...ouquet still smells of the high octane product. A top day & a special thank you to Jo, a family friend, who worked tirelessly in support & Smiler for the use of his Toyota Land Cruiser in carting plenty of support equipment. Everyone involved contributed to the highest level & a HUGE credit to the Shed. Many thanks to Bunnings (Woodville), Hollywood Fresh (Salisbury Downs) & Foodland (Munno Para) for their GREAT support. Special Note: Tomorrow 10/11/2020 a few of us decided to go kayaking & if anyone is interested please be at the Shed by 0830 so that appropriate gear can be loaded onto the trailer. Friday the 13th (Hmmm!) we are heading off on a bike ride at 0900 & anyone interested in tempting fate please come along. See more

16.01.2022 What would you do Captain Ted

16.01.2022 TEST & TAG + BUNNINGS DONATION OF TOOLS & CABINET: Pleasing to note that the electrical tools & appliances were tested & tagged on Wednesday & many thanks to the electrician who wishes to remain anonymous. A huge Thank You to Bunnings for their donation of a tools cabinet with a good variety of spanners, sockets & associated goodies. Included in the cabinet were two unbeknown 25kg bags of pool salt (anti theft device) that proved a challenge when lifting the unit into the back of the ute. A Certifice of Appreciation will be sent to Bunnings at Woodville. A great day for the Shed & many thanks to Francis for consulting with Bunnings. Captain Ted.

15.01.2022 Please share and buy a ticket!! There are lots of fantastic prizes on offer for only $2 per ticket. Make sure you don't miss out. Peoples Choice have kindly donated the prizes and all funds from tickets sold will go to the Defence Shed Port Adelaide.

15.01.2022 KAYAKING 17-10-20: The weather report was threatening strong winds, rain & cool conditions but 4 brave souls convinced me to take on the challenge & so I relented. The weather turned out perfect with light winds, blue skies & calm waters. After a photoshoot by the cabin cruiser, we tackled two estuaries at low tide that resulted in a super satisfactory paddle. Homeward bound we encountered 5 dolphins that continued to swim around our kayaks for over 15 minutes & our two novic...es (first timers) were thrilled with excitement. Another outstanding paddle kayaking with veterans enjoying each other's company. Enjoyed a BBQ back at the Shed & many thanks to Michael, Francis & Izzy for preparing the food delight. Kayaking is proving to be a highly successful activity & if you need a fitness boost please contact us at the Shed on 0427607932. Happy paddling! See more

15.01.2022 A tragedy has struck, though within the Veteran community this is not new hat. Over time we have seen a lot of adversity within the XMRC and the Veteran communi...ty. This event will not waver us, we will adapt and overcome evolving into something bigger and better. This will not be a negative but instead a launching point for growth and creating positive outcomes. We thank everyone who was there and the support that has followed. Look forward to the future as the Ex-Military Rehabilitation Centre Inc. will rise from the ashes like a phoenix and continue to support/service Veterans, Veterans families & the Community. UNITED WE STAND #Veterans #mateship #resilience #southaustralia #Positivity

14.01.2022 RECREATIONAL BIKE RIDE, 24/02/2021, Defence Shed. Today was a perfect day for a leisurely ride to North Haven. Five Veterans all agreed to take advantage of the fine weather and push the pedals to free our minds from worry and increase our fitness levels, plus some good banter over a coffee (thanks Nick) Nice to see members of the Shed, thougherly enjoying themselves. We will continue the recreational bikes rides from the Shed every Wednesday while the weather is fine. Any Veterans and first responders who would like to participate are very welcome to ride along with us Shedders

14.01.2022 Update: Kayaking may still be on tomorrow. It will dependant on the weather in the morning. Unfortunately there's no Kayaking tomorrow due to the weather being unfavorable. We'll still be open and your more than welcome to pop in and say gidday and have a cuppa

13.01.2022 Sat, 3/10/20 Bike check/Maintenance Day at the shed. Impressive turn out by our members today & also a visitor, Tony (ex army). Always great to see new faces and as always greet with a warm shed welcome. Everyone enjoyed tips on how to keep their bicycles running smooth & safe. Woody's bike had both hubs greased, chain, gears lubed and is stoked that his bike is a pleasure to ride now & reckons he can ride 5k/ph faster. That's what the Defence Shed is all about Veterans helping each other. Big thanks to Marg & Mick for providing a tasty lunch to finish off the day at the Shed. PS, once all members bikes have been checked, we will start our shed rides so watch this space.

13.01.2022 Effective immediately the Shed will be closed until further notice. Please stay safe and reach out if you need anything

11.01.2022 Housekeeping 21-9-2020: Redundant materials that were cluttering the Shed; loaded onto a trailer ready for Hard Rubbish Pick-Up. Note: No materials to be brought to the Shed without the Committee's approval as the time & effort to remove these products has been consuming & not fair on Members wishing to enjoy quality time. It's pleasing to note that the aesthetics of the surrounding rear areas has improved & with a little more work will look pristine. Kayaking Saturday 26-9-2020 will be dependent on the weather forecast especially wind conditions. Hoping for clear skies & light winds. Captain Ted.

11.01.2022 HOUSEKEEPING - THE MORGUE & UPGRADING DAMAGED CUPBOARDS. Came home looking like a coal miner after completing a shift deep in the mines. But, the results were satisfying with the two cupboards recycled, repaired & painted to be reused for the storage of kayaking equipment. Used a blower-vac to remove the fine dust & nearly became lost in the resultant dust storm - an unbelievable amount of fine dust accumulated over many years. Explanation - The Morgue: Located at the Shed is the oldest Morgue in SA now being used by us as a storage area for our kayaking equipment. A number of people have refused to enter the premises due to an eirie presence & a few 'bullshit' stories by a number of veterans. Kayaking: Next week improvement in the weather will ensure a paddle or two or three. Keep in touch - Kapitan Kayak.

10.01.2022 REMEMBERANCE DAY "LEST WE FORGET" At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.

Monday, 23/11/2020 leaving the Shed at 0930 hrs & travelling to Garden Island & if tide levels are favourable we will paddle into the Creek Estuaries on the Eastern Bank then back to the launch site via viewing a few wrecks. Should be scenic & memorable kayak for attendees. Bike Ride will be on the Agenda for Wednesday 25/11/2020. We have an active programme to ensure our veterans maintain strength & fitness in their later years - "the ticker must keep ticking". Hope to see you in good spirits - Captain Ted.

05.01.2022 KAYAKING - SEVERE WEATHER WARNING: With a severe weather warning for an early afternoon, a team of brave souls (Rudy, Ingrid, Cameron & Ted) decided to take advantage of ideal conditions early morning. The Port River conditions were 'ideal', & we thoroughly enjoyed 4 hours of bliss. After exploring the Port Harbour I made the call 'homeward bound' as the water began to show signs of wave motion & the wind became blustery & cooler. Back on shore for 5 minutes; the wind began t...o blow at 35/40 knots - good timing & all were grateful for the Captain's Call. Many thanks to Michael who gratefully supplied lunch with an assortment of gourmet cheeses, smoked meats & crackers. Very tasty & much appreciated. Thanks also to Francis & Gloria for holding the fort during our kayaking. Great Day with Quality People; & a credit to the Sheds welcoming atmosphere. Captain Ted. See more

02.01.2022 KAYAKING 29-8-20: RELAXING & CHILLING OUT. What a great day on the water with two new lady members (Ingrid (RAAF) & her daughter Elizabeth). Waters were calm with a light wind & conditions perfect. Note: Rudy, got his collar caught on a mangrove branch & could not reach it & struggled for over a minute before it released - it was funny to watch. It was so relaxing I did not want it to end. Great Day with grand people. Captain Ted. N.B. A big thank you to the wonderful people that donated two TV screens plus a wood lathe - will come in handy.

01.01.2022 Thank God it does not appear to be an Australian snake - Scary!
