10.01.2022 Wouldn’t it be nice if all businesses big or small were tied to an organization in some way or the other that supports and empowers differently abled individuals with their social right to work, their economic right to earn a living, and their god given right to live life the way they want? That’s exactly what Hillside Pantry did when they chose to partner with a Sri Lankan based social enterprise, Apeksha, to get their staff uniforms made.... So, kudos to cafe entrepreneurs Sharni & Denham De Silva of Hillside Pantry for their initiative to partner with Apeksha in supporting a generous dollop of good cause. ? Apeksha is a registered organization in Sri Lanka, a social enterprise that supports differently abled individuals, specially the blind and visually impaired by empowering them with paid work. The organisation, with the help of a team of differently abled individuals, manufactures and sell items such as branded/promotional T-shirts, bags etc and other consumer products to businesses and individuals. During a brief telephone interview with Sharmeen Falaldeen, philanthropist & managing director of Apeksha, by Kevin De Fransz of DEFRANSZ ESQ, Sharmeen said everything we do at Apeksha is very transparent and our records are clear where the ladies are paid a salary over and above the legal minimum salary requirements, timely government contributions of Employees Provident fund, Employees Trust Fund, lunch, transport all provided free of charge and we operate totally as a social enterprise (not a charity , not an NGO and we don't take monetary donations) where we make and sell items and any profit is re-invested back to the betterment of the team to uplift their lives She also went onto to say; despite many challenges we faced and face, we are also one of the organisations where we paid timely salary and in full without any pay cuts during the lock down due to COVID-19 in the months of March, April, May and continue to do so, unlike many of the big giants in the industry who have done pay cuts and terminated employment of employees Creating a differently abled inclusive partnership doesn’t happen by chance. Instead, it takes great entrepreneurship, initiatives, and changes to be accepted and practiced by everyone within the organisation. Regardless of your position in the business or the company you work for, know that you can make a difference and effect change to create a more differently abled inclusive space for those with disabilities, whether visible or invisible! We started out just a dream. A sparkle in our eyes. We wanted to float a café that not only served great coffee and soul nourishing food but also offer sanctuary to those who wanted to pauseand celebrate those finer moments in life. Those micro moments that we too often take for granted. We believe that there is something to celebrate in a cup of coffee, a meal, a dessert, a warm smile, and a hospitable experience. . Today, we’re proud to be a big part of the daily celebration of those finer moments in the lives of every person who visit our café, Hillside Pantry.
