You already know the basics, i.e. to avoid wheat, spelt, kamut, farro, durum, bulgar, semolina..., barley, rye, triticale and oats (read label as some are now GF). But you'll find researching what is/isn't safe for your child the quickest way to feeling more confident. That's how you discover the hidden gluten lurking in... soy sauce powdered cooking spices tomato sauce malt-flavoured products some medications + many more innocuous-looking foods. Look for a reference chart you like, then print it out and keep it on your fridge so you and your little one can learn what to buy and eat. Eventually you won't need this, but it's a lifesaver when you start transitioning to gluten free. You'll also want to research gluten free recipes you can cook at home, as well as great GF restaurants (that's how I found the place in Cairns in this pic). Spend just 60 seconds with a Google search and you'll have an abundance of awesome blogs, podcasts, social media accounts to use as your reference. 06.01.2022 Delving into the world of intermittent fasting (IF) or time restricted feeding (TRF) can be intimidating and if not done correctly can lead to nutritional deficiencies. IF is not the same as a severe calorie restricted/ starvation diet plan. An interesting new study on TRF shortened the daily duration of food intake where participants pushed breakfast back by 90 mins and moved dinner earlier by 90 mins. The results showed significant losses in body fat. This has opened the door to further studies in TRF. "For the vast majority of human ...history, we ate only unprocessed and minimally processed foodsmeat, fish, fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, starchy tubers, and more recently, whole grains, legumes, and dairy products. Starting in the 1950s, and accelerating rapidly from the 1970s forward, a new category of foods has emerged as the primary source of calories in industrialized countries like the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia: ultra-processed foods. Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are defined as ready-to-consume and ready-to-heat formulations, made by combining substances derived from foods with cosmetic additives, typically through a series of industrial processes. They include soft drinks, chips, cookies, candy, and many other processed and packaged foods. Now, the wealthy countries of the world are exporting our frankenfoods to developing countries around the world. These nationsincluding Brazil, China, Indonesia, India, and South Africaare home to two-thirds of the global population, so the rise in consumption of ultra-processed foods in those countries has dire implications for global health. What is particularly insidious about this transition is that ultra-processed food consumption tends to shift from higher to lower socioeconomic groups as income increases in a country. In other words, the negative health burden of these highly refined foods is disproportionately carried by poor people worldwide. Ultra-processed foods have been associated with a wide range of health problems, including (but not limited to): -Weight gain -Obesity -Type 2 diabetes -Cardiovascular disease -Hypertension -Cancer These UPFs are being aggressively exported and promoted in developing countries by multinational corporations that are seeking new markets for their products. For example, a New York Times article in 2017 explained Nestlé’s deceptive and predatory marketing tactics in Brazil. The company hires door-to-door vendors that sell chocolate milk, cakes, cookies, and other Nestlé processed foods even to the most isolated and rural areas of the country. Nestlé persuades their sales reps that their products are healthy, because of the labels that boast of added vitamins and minerals. What they don’t tell their sales reps, or customers, is how much sugar and other processed ingredients these products contain. According to the New York Times article, virtually all of the Nestlé products that are popular in Brazil are sugar-sweetened items like Kit-Kats; Nestlé Greek Red Berry, a 3.5-ounce cup of yogurt with 17 grams of sugar; and Chandelle Pacoca, a peanut-flavored pudding in a container the same size as the yogurt that has 20 grams of sugarnearly the entire World Health Organization’s recommended daily limit. Nestlé’s direct sales program has also been successful in promoting their products as status symbols. For example, when people in these rural communities have parties, they will often serve Nestlé products to their guests. What’s more, as Nestlé and other multinational food conglomerates push into the developing world, they are incentivizing farmers to abandon their local, traditional cropswhich are often far more nutritiousin favor of commodities like soybeans, sugar, and corn, which are the building blocks for nutrient-depleted, industrial food products. This is a perfect example of how health is not simply an individual choice. There are powerful economic, political, and societal factors that determine what kinds of foods we have access to, and thus what choices we are likely to make. For meaningful change to occur, it must happen on several levels: individual, community, national, and global. We have the most control over individual and community transformation, but that doesn’t mean we can’t push for changes on a larger scaleby voting with our wallets and supporting policies and politicians that are standing up against Big Food. 01.01.2022 #CoeliacAwarenessWeek #3 ... There's an alternative for EVERYTHING! Not boring alternatives either. I mean nutrient-rich, often-healt...hier-than-the-original alternatives. It’s fortunate you're living at a time when gluten free is well understood and alternatives are easy to find. Your local supermarket, cafes and restaurants ought to be able to cater to your child's GF needs, at least to some degree - don't be afraid to ask what they have. Pre-prepared cakes, biscuits, chocolates, donuts, pizzas, bagels, gnocchi - they all come in gluten free varieties. So if your child are feeling down because they're not eating the same as everyone at the table, it's time to encourage them to let that feeling go and embrace a healthier perspective. It's common for children (and adults) to feel left out at parties where the host doesn't cater for GF. Yeah, it sucks, but this too shall pass... and it's also why I recommend carrying GF snacks in your bag wherever you go, just in case you're in a situation like this. There’s also an abundance of gluten free recipes available online, which means if you like to cook, you have the power to create delectable & healthy, gluten free meals and treats yourself. #HotTip Buy gluten free ingredients, e.g. coconut flour, quinoa flour, chickpea flour, cocoa and raw nuts from your local bulk food shop, as it usually makes things much cheaper.
