15.01.2022 Work to prepare the Beauchamp Falls campground and day visitor area for a site upgrade is progressing. Beauchamp Falls popularity as a place to camp and visit has increased over the years. Prior to the current restrictions, this increase in popularity presented issues such as site overcrowding, illegal campsites and concerns about traffic and pedestrian movement. The upgrades will improve the site layout and create separate spaces for day visitors and campers, making it a sa...fer and more accessible space for everyone to enjoy when we can. The site was closed earlier this year to allow for a pine plantation to be harvested. We have prepared a concept plan for the site, which will feature a larger carpark for day visitors, fire pits, a picnic shelter and an additional 5 vehicle-based camping spaces. The concept was developed on user activities at the site, as well as experience gained from other upgrades we have completed and advice from a landscape architect. The plan will be shared with the community for feedback in the coming weeks. Its hoped upgrade works will begin in November 2020 and take 6 months. The site will remain closed until the upgrades are complete.

14.01.2022 Today is National Threatened Species Day and were profiling some of the at-risk species in our part of the world. This is the Spiral Sun Orchid, which is only found in five locations in Victoria including the Anglesea Heath. In early spring, the Spiral Sun Orchid opens its stunning flower to allow pollination to occur. ... Once pollinated, the plant produces tiny seeds which make the most of October and November winds to spread to nearby sites, ensuring the population continues. FFMVics winter planned burning program assists this species by reducing biomass in the Anglesea Heath, creating new areas for the seed to settle on the ground. DELWP also play a role in protecting this rare orchid, by working with volunteers to monitor how the local population is tracking. #NationalThreatenedSpeciesDay #BiodiversityMonth

04.01.2022 We're building two new groynes and a section of rock seawall at Apollo Bay to help manage the impacts of coastal erosion. The new 70-meter-long rock groynes will run perpendicular to the shoreline and be located south of the existing Milford Street revetement and to the south of Milford Creek. Sections of rock seawall will also be constructed between the two Groynes to protect the dune, walking path, cypress trees and Great Ocean Road. ... Groynes are rock structures running from the beach out into the surf zone that capture sand as is drifts past and deposits it on the beach. The sea wall will act as a permanent physical barrier to protect the foreshore from the impacts of waves and erosion. Detailed engineering work, including wave and sediment transport modelling, has determined the location and design of the new infrastructure to ensure it achieves value for money and will deliver results in what is a dynamic coastal environment. Extensive community engagement on the issue of coastal erosion over several years has also been incorporated into the design, with strong local support for on-ground action, including new physical structures and to ensure ongoing access to and along the foreshore. When the groynes are constructed beach nourishment will be used to prefill the beach on the up-drift side to minimise the impact of the groynes on the beach to the north. Construction is expected to begin in early 2021.
