23.01.2022 In a Victorian first, the Victorian Government will make 2 gigalitres of water available from the Mitchell River to the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation for cultural and economic development purposes. DELWP acknowledges and respects that Traditional Owners have a deep and ongoing cultural, spiritual and economic connection to land, water and resources. We’re committed to supporting Aboriginal access to water for economic development, increasing inclusion an...d building capacity, as demonstrated in our Water for Victoria strategy. The Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation will receive this water from the Mitchell River by applying to Southern Rural Water for a licence under the Water Act. In addition to this, a further 4GL of water will be available on the open market half in the coming months and the remainder next year.
22.01.2022 Heading to a local beach this weekend? At your visit to the beach remember to stay safe with these quick tips: use the length of a towel to keep 1.5m away from people who are not in your household ... wear a fitted face mask while you’re at the beach, and have it ready to put on after being the water. When you arrive at the beach, read safety signs and notices about local hazards, and take time to observe conditions before entering the water. Supervise children closely around water and always swim with a friend. Use the Beachsafe app to check forecasted local weather and conditions, and plan alternative options if your preferred beach is too busy. You can also check the VicEmergency app for beach closures. Being COVIDSafe includes wearing a fitted face mask, practicing physical distancing of 1.5 metres, ensuring good hand hygiene including the use of hand sanitiser, observing group size limits and staying home when unwell. Please visit www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au for up-to-date information, updates and advice.

18.01.2022 Happy NAIDOC week 2020! NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each year to recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.... The theme this year Always was, Always Will Be recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded. Check out a short clip where you can meet some of our DELWP Gippsland First Custodians. Please note our staff wore masks while not on camera and followed all physical distancing and proper hygiene requirements while making this video. 14.01.2022 Following severe winds across parts of Victoria, learn how to be energy safe during a power outage by following these tips. Keep clear of fallen powerlines and keep others away. The powerlines may still be live, so you should call your local electricity distributor. Check your neighbour’s house to see if they have also lost power. If your neighbour has power on, then check to see if your safety switch has been tripped. Be careful when using candles and other open flames... keep naked flames away from flammable material. Make sure appliances are turned off (because they could come back on when you are not there). Know what to do: energy.vic.gov.au
13.01.2022 We are supporting renewable energy generation, management and storage technologies in the Latrobe Valley with a new $3 million grant program. 11.01.2022 The final bridge for this week is the humble Storers earth top bridge. This bridge was located at the Bonang Road end of Storers Track but collapsed after being impacted by the fires last summer. It has now been replaced with a 600mm concrete culvert with end walls. Storers Track is well-used by our crews in far East Gippsland as a key access track to the Old Orbost water reservoir and Youngs Creek Falls walking tracks. ... While no longer technically a bridge, the new crossing is much safer and reliable for locals and Forest Fire Management crews which we think is worth celebrating! 07.01.2022 This week we are celebrating bridges repaired or replaced after last summer’s bushfires. The first bridge is in the recently re-opened Casuarina Walk in the Mallacoota Bushland Reserve. Our crews and contractors have worked hard to get the walk safe and re-opened this year, including repairing the old bridge in time for the warmer weather. 05.01.2022 Bridge number three replaced after the bushfires is the Pyramid Creek bridge in Club Terrace. This bridge provides access to homes as well as strategic access to Club Terrace for firefighting and other forest management activities. Replacing this bridge was no easy feat! It required specialised engineering solutions and consultation with utility providers as the bridge site hosts crucial electrical, gas and communications infrastructure ... Complex safety management systems were developed to ensure the safety of workers and the vital infrastructure during construction. Like the Glen Arte bridge, this bridge can now accommodate large firefighting vehicles and has a design life of 100 years. Bushfire Recovery Victoria Snowy River Mail

04.01.2022 Residents in Mallacoota, Wangarabell and Mt Koolabbra near Bonang and surrounding areas may see or smell smoke from the ignition of the following planned burns today, Tuesday 10 November. 01.01.2022 Today’s bridge replaced after the bushfires is the Glen Arte bridge. The Glen Arte bridge provides essential access to a private residence and is a popular thoroughfare for visitors traversing through the forests of far East Gippsland. Without a safe bridge in place, recovery clean-up was postponed, but is now underway.... The new bridge can accommodate heavy firefighting machinery, is made of fire-resistant materials (steel and concrete) and has a design life of 100 years ! Along with some minor road improvements, this new bridge has vastly improved access for locals and our crews to respond to bushfires and conduct forest management activities in the area.
