25.01.2022 Following severe winds that caused power outages in Ruffy, Avenal and Tallarook, learn how to be energy safe during a power outage by following these tips. Keep clear of fallen powerlines and keep others away. The powerlines may still be live, so you should call your local electricity distributor. Check your neighbour’s house to see if they have also lost power. If your neighbour has power on, then check to see if your safety switch has been tripped. Be careful when u...sing candles and other open flames keep naked flames away from flammable material. Make sure appliances are turned off (because they could come back on when you are not there). 25.01.2022 Our crews in Marysville have been busy preparing for the Granton Pitt Track planned burn, which is scheduled to be ignited tomorrow (Thursday 4 March). The 16-hectare fuel reduction burn aims to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires near Marysville, Narbethong and surrounding communities. Reducing fuel loads means bushfires are less intense, making it more likely that firefighters can contain them before they impact on people, property and the environment.... Weather permitting, the burn will be completed tomorrow afternoon and crews will patrol the area for several days until the area is declared safe. Under the current public health advice, planned burning is continuing across Victoria. During the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, we continue to work closely with the Department of Health and Environment Protection Authority to ensure we keep the smoke impacts from planned burning as low as practically possible. Our crews are adhering to appropriate physical distancing and hygiene requirements to ensure we can safely continue our operations across the state. 24.01.2022 This small patch of native habitat within the Pheasant Creek Flora Reserve is home to the critically endangered Shelley (or Summer) Leek-orchid and over 40 other threatened species. After a fire went through the reserve last summer, we constructed a 5-hectare deer exclusion fence to support its recovery and provide long-term protection from introduced deer. 10.01.2022 One hundred and twenty motion-sensor cameras have been installed across the Ovens Valley to detect and monitor Long-footed Potoroos ability to survive following last summer’s devastating fires. The cameras will be stationed for the next 21 days and use heat-sensing technology that trigger an infra-red ‘flash’ when movement is detected capturing images of the rarely seen species. The data will be used to help us better understand the impacts that widespread fires have on ...the threatened marsupial so we can take important steps to ensure its survival. Long-footed Potoroos are an endangered species and only found in parts of north east Victoria and far east Gippsland. Bushfires, climate change and predation by foxes, wild dogs and feral cats has contributed to the population’s decline. This project is part of the Victorian Government’s Bushfire Biodiversity Response and Recovery program which supports on-ground action to help species impacted by last summer’s bushfires.
