25.01.2022 For many years we've looked for an alternative to large scale residential care buildings that either end up like institutions or hotels, neither particularly suiting the needs of people living with dementia. This innovative provider in Sydney, Australia may have found a better model! Group homes are nothing new in the disabilty sector but are just becoming a real alternative in dementia care. http://grouphomes.com.au/concept/benefits/

24.01.2022 Some interesting debate this week in the team about the best tap design for people with dementia. Opinions seem equally split between the familiarity of crosshead design v's the ease of use of a lever head design. Research evidence is very limited in this area. Whats your experience of which is most enabling?

23.01.2022 Well done to Chorus care organisation on winning peoples choice garden of the year at the Perth Garden Festival. Their garden raised awareness of dementia and the importance of well-being and the role gardens can play in.

22.01.2022 We are always on the look out for innovative design or technology ideas and came across this nifty USB idea today. You simply plug it into your computer, record emergency contact details and any medical info on the USB then attach it to keys or handbag etc. If the person with dementia becomes lost or ill hopefully the information will assist emergency services make contact with family or carers quickly. Great simple idea! https://www.icemergency.com.au/

21.01.2022 Had the pleasure of listening to the staff at BUPA aged care talking about their design model that places the kitchen at the heart of the home. Food is heated in the kitchen to bring aroma of cooking and residents have free access and are supported to enagge in activities in the space. Kitchens play an important role in making home "home"!

20.01.2022 Great example of how to create an intimate room for meaningful music and reminsicence. They have a large selection of vinyl LP's and decorate the room with album sleeves meaningful to the person who will be using the room that day. This is in the dementia neighbourhood at a Schlegel village in Ontario, Canada.

19.01.2022 In case you ever doubted getting out in the garden was good for you! https://www.stuff.co.nz//should-doctors-prescribe-gardening

18.01.2022 Hospitals can be some of the most challenging environments for people living with dementia. The good news is that many health services are now working to creating more dementia friendly hospitals, both in design and in care practices. Here's a great example of a dementia enabling ward refurbishment in the UK at Warrington and Halton hospitals NHS foundation trust.

17.01.2022 Well done to one of our local town councils who attended our dementia design course and have adopted the principles into a public toilet block in a local park. Features that make this more enabling for a person with dementia include; the contrasting toilet seat, floor to wall contrast, clear door signage and having one direct door into each toilet. Future improvements could include contrasting hand rails and contrasting flush buttons

17.01.2022 Our article on adapting the home in last weekends West Australian newspaper.

16.01.2022 WA residential care provider testing the door skins mentioned in a previous post https://www.agedcareinsite.com.au//knock-knock-residents-/

16.01.2022 Over the next few months we are going to be working on a project looking at urban design that supports and enables people living with dementia. Do you know of any great examples or research in this area?

13.01.2022 Read all about how Alzheimer's WA has transformed the traditional day centre model to something very special. A part of this transformation is ensuring the physical environment reflects and enables the service philosophy. Our enabling design has created a home away from home that provides autonomy and well-being. http://journalofdementiacare.com/a-home-away-from-home/

13.01.2022 Following on from our recent post about the graphics you can buy to make a bedroom door look like a front door, this interesting project is bringing a more individulised approach to this idea by using door facades that are in peoples long term memories. http://www.abc.net.au//old-doors-open-way-for-bend/8809250

12.01.2022 Attended the AAG conference last week at the newly built Crown Towers in Perth. As I always do I conducted a quick environment audit as I was walking around, needless to say once again poor flooring choices have created a very dementia unfriendly space! Special mention to the entrance lobby where contrast between highly polished shapes and matt shapes looks like pools of water!

12.01.2022 Murals should be more than window dressing. Useful article on how to use murals to set up meaningful engagement opportunities for people living with dementia. https://thecarehomedesigner.com//how-to-use-a-murals-in-a-

11.01.2022 Did you know there is a growing body of evidence that using coloured crockery can help people with spatial perception or eyesight difficulties? Here's a good example of how much easier it is to see food when there is contrast compared to a white plate. I wonder how better nourished people with dementia in hospital would be if meals were served on this tray?

11.01.2022 Great example of creating a social gathering space inside a residential care setting. Many people with dementia may be reluctant to go outside, though that's no reason to lock the garden door!, so creating indoor/outdoor spaces can bring the outside in and create a great space to sit and read the paper or share coffee with friends. 10.01.2022 It has been a very exciting year at Alzheimer's WA in 2017 and ended with a great project to transform the garden at Ellas House in Mandurah. The garden was designed using dementia design principles and is a great example of how to create a therapuetic useable and safe outdoor space for people living with dementia.

07.01.2022 A useful new resource from the Dementia Centre on toilet design https://www.dementiacentre.com//61-toilet-talk-accessible-

06.01.2022 It's great to see public buildings taking up the challenge to become more enabling for people living with the disabilities of dementia. Well done to the Great Sankey Neighbourhood Hub on becoming the first public building in England to gain a University of Stirling gold accreditation for dementia design. For ideas on public building design visit our dementia design website www.enablingenvironments.com.au/public-buildings

06.01.2022 We often get asked about coloured plates and other crockery. There is research to suggest it can be beneficial, mainly due to providing contrast of food to plate and being more visually appealing. If you dont have coloured plates available you can create contrast from behind with coloured place mats or table cloth. http://www.dailymail.co.uk//How-rescue-NHS-food-Put-blue-p

05.01.2022 Sometimes the simplest pleasures make the biggest differences. Well done to this young man. How good would it be to see this available for every resident in aged care who wanted to experience it?

05.01.2022 We have had an amazing 17,000 visitors to our dementia design website in the last 6 months! As we close in on 2000 followers on this page it is great to see that information on enabling dementia design is finally getting out. Please share this page with your colleagues and visit our website if you havent yet, lets make every building enabling for a person living with dementia! www.enablingenvironments.com.au

05.01.2022 Simple but smart design feature that prevents water from the shower causing a slip hazard in the bathroom, but that doesnt impede access or cause a trip hazard. Soft rubber lip folds if stood on but is deep enough to prevent water run off.

03.01.2022 Great presentation from last month's Alzheimer's WA's "WE in Dementia" community symposium https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EUH_Z7ILek

03.01.2022 Ran an interesting workshop today with my colleague Robina Crook at the PIA congress exploring urban design for people living with dementia. A sector of design that is still very much in its infancy with great potential for improvement. The room was full and the designers and planners in attendance were very interested in considering how urban design can enable or disable people with cogntiive impairments.
