23.01.2022 WARING GARDENS ON STATE HERITAGE LIST 1981 NOW WHAT?

21.01.2022 WARING GARDENS WISTERIA BRINGS HOPE IN SPRING The 135 year old wisteria in Waring Gardens, which was to be axed by Council, has been blooming over the last few weeks, providing a bright spot in an otherwise dismal scene of consultant inspired destruction of the ‘jewell‘ of Deniliquin. The ancient wisteria is the only flowering plant in what used to be a garden. The Waring Gardens are now totally devoid of any flowers or gardeners and can only be called a park. It’s springtime and it’s very sad. All submissions for the Integrated Development application have been forwarded to Heritage NSW, and council is working with Heritage NSW to fast track the review process and continue as planned. Whether the submissions make any difference to their plans remains to be seen. It’s Now up to those who care, to hold them to account.

20.01.2022 WITH SORROW & REGRET WE FAREWELL DAMIEN RHOOK It was with shock that we recently learned of the death of Damien Rhook the man behind the Facebook page Deniliquin History in Photos. Damien was passionate about many things including the history of Deniliquin and amassed a large following of people who also treasured our local history. When we began our own Facebook page in 2015, Damien generously helped us by sending his own followers and fans to follow our page as well. ...He often shared our pages on his page and occasionally we collaborated on the mysteries of our local history. He will be missed greatly by history fans and we will miss his generosity of spirit in sharing Deniliquin’s amazing history. The image is upstairs at the Exchange Hotel 2015. See more

19.01.2022 THE WARING GARDENS VANDALISM CONTINUES... JOHN (JACK) MITCHELL BECK 1901-1936 Thirteen years after Beck’s last complaint, the Pastoral Times, 13 September 1927, reported that the Council gardener, Mr J. Beck, had forwarded the following complaint to the Aldermen the previous night, following another bout of devastating vandalism in the Waring Gardens. I wish to draw Council's attention to the destruction of plants, shrubs, and other Council property in the Waring Gardens. T...Continue reading

15.01.2022 NEW HONOUR BOARD HONOURS OUR MUSEUM HISTORY The museum has collected a few honour boards donated by now defunct organisations, but we didn’t have our own. Long time and highly valued member, DOT MATHEWSON has doggedly been putting our own history of past presidents, secretaries and treasurers together during the year to put on our own honour board. Unfortunately, Dot was absent due to a leg operation, when Jacob from Visatek put the finishing touches to it and hung it up amongst some of the others in our collection. Well done Dot meanwhile MIck Jacobs and Lindsay Renwick were researching their latest project and Betty Matthews and Pat Hunt were putting images into our system in the photo room. Go ladies

13.01.2022 WARING GARDENS-A BEAUTY SPOT The Pastoral Times, 4 October 1938 was effusive in their praise of the efforts of Mr Thomas Coe, the curator of Waring Gardens. What one man (with rheumatism) achieved in the space of 18 months Is absolutely staggering. Unfortunately we have no photos of this period, and hope some readers may have some tucked away, that they could share with us. Instead I have posted what the same area looked like July 2020. How did it come to this? Here is the e...Continue reading

Beck has decided to retire. Beck announced his decision to retire In a letter to the Municipal Council, saying that at 68 years of age, he felt that he was getting too old to carry on and would like to be relieved of duty at the end of the year. 04.01.2022 1937-1943 Mr Thomas William Coe John Mitchell Beck’s gardening galoshes were filled by a River Street market gardener and returned soldier Mr Thomas William Coe. Tommy Coe, as he was affectionately known, served the Council and community extremely well from 1937-1943, when he resigned to take up a job for the war effort in Queensland after 25 years curating the Waring Gardens. The Independent, 14 January 1937, reported that he was one of fifteen applications received by Counc...il for the position. Bev Clancy in her book ’They Are Remembered’, 2016, says Thomas William Coe was born in Deniliquin in 1892 to Thomas and Mary (nee Harrison). He was one of six children and along with two brothers he enlisted in the AIF on 4 August 1915. The French climate did not agree with him and he reported ill after only 2 months with swollen joints and a high temperature on May 11, 1916. He was diagnosed with rheumatic fever and admitted to Harefield Hospital in Greater London for further treatment. He was discharged from Harefield on 27 July 1916, granted furlough and finally returned to Melbourne on the New Zealand hospital ship ‘Marama’ still suffering from rheumatism, on 17 October 1916. He was discharged from the AIF in Sydney on 15th of November 1916, and was awarded the 1914 -15 Star Medal, British War Medal and Victory Medal. Tom was an early member of the RSSILA the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia and served as an Assistant Secretary of the Deniliquin Branch in 1939 and apart from his time in the military, he spent all his life in Deniliquin. Back in Deniliquin, he slowly recovered and developed a market garden near ‘Aratong’ in River Street. In 1921 he married Henrietta Thornber in Deniliquin and after growing vegetables for a few years, he became the curator for the Waring Gardens. The Independent, 1 July 1937, reported that a grant of 25 for the Waring Gardens was recommended to be used for a general scheme of concrete edging in the gardens, as outlined by gardener Coe. A month later they reported that Ald. Matthews said a good deal of money was 'spent' in planting willow trees last year. Many were dead. Were they going to be replaced? He thought it would be better to place cuttings in the lagoon until they rooted, and then replant them. The engineer said that the gardener, Mr. Coe, had provided cuttings and these would be transplanted. The Independent, 16 September 1937, announced that the public appreciated the excellent improvements in the layout of the lagoon foreshore in the Waring Gardens brought about by Mr. Coe, and that the gardens in general, presented a fine appearance. The fence of the Waring gardens was also being altered to suit the altered war memorial and good progress had been made on the removal of the cumbungai from the lagoon. It appeared that Mr Coe was off to flying start. To be continued Photo courtesy of Wendy Johnston. Bill, Kath & Ossie c. 1936

04.01.2022 MR TOM COE Continued You would have to be at least ninety years old to remember the glorious flower bedecked jewell that was the Waring Gardens of Mr Coe, described in a previous post. According to the Pastoral Times, 10 October 1938, the gardener in Waring Gardens, Mr Tom Coe had feed times for the wild fowl on the lagoon and a whistle from him, brought them scurrying to the bridge for a feed. On 5 June 1941, The Independent reported that a black swan from the Waring Gardens...Continue reading

03.01.2022 1941 AERIAL PHOTO OF DENILIQUIN LAGOONS Yes I remember some three or four years ago, when the dirty lagoon, with its muddy banks, stretched its monotonous length, like a huge sleeping lizard across the map. Fred Harrison, Pastoral Times 1885 The RSL sports complex was built on one end and the community garden on the other after both lagoons were drained and filled in.

02.01.2022 SAD FAREWELL FROM JANICE & SUZY Janice Harrington and myself Suzy Keys both came to Deniliquin a few years ago now, to care for our elderly mums. They have since passed on and it’s now time to go home, Janice to Brisbane and myself to Cairns. During that time we have shared an abiding interest in the fascinating history of Deniliquin and enjoyed the company of other like minded historians at the Deniliquin and District Historical Society. Janice has been secretary an...d assisted in obtaining many of the grants that have been used for the maintenance and extension of the property and it’s contents, while I have been running our Facebook Page, researching the history of the Waring Gardens, James Tyson, creating videos and maintaining the photos. We are both very sad to leave Deniliquin but will return when we can to continue our work at the museum. If a recent grant application is successful we will be able to work on projects remotely, so here’s hoping that comes to fruition. We were recently farewelled by some of the members whom we will miss very much and whom have our very best wishes. See more

01.01.2022 WARING GARDENS GARDENERS-BECK 1901-1936 John Beck, commenced his duties as the gardener on July 20, 1901. He found that the gardens had been neglected but he had soon done up one side of the gardens, and was working on the other side two weeks later. In a council report August 3, the Mayor stated that when the new Gardener was appointed, he found that the tools were scattered about the town, having been lent by the last Gardener. He had given instructions that none of the t...Continue reading
