10.01.2022 NEW MULBERRY GRAFT BEARS FRUIT Thanks to John Russell for sharing his grafting expertise at a grafting workshop earlier this year. Two grafts of a red mulberry onto a white one have produced one little mulberry. Well done John.

08.01.2022 THESE MEMBERS ARE MOVING ON Deniliquin Community Garden commenced 14 years ago, with Jan Renwick one of its original founders. Now it’s time for tireless workers, Wendy Johnston, Suzy Keys and Janice Harrington to move on to other pursuits. The garden has had a resurgence in the past couple of years, turning from a wilderness into a productive and inclusive initiative for the wider community to experience and appreciate. With support of ERC and the Pastoral Times,... members have been able to put the unity into Community and establish a space for people to grow, learn, and develop their interests. Members and visitors have been able to share information, new varieties of vegetables, growing techniques and foster friendships. The garden is enjoying its highest level of membership and community engagement, hosting educational workshops, and regular open days and gatherings. It’s also led the way in sustainable back-yard gardening practices including fruit-fly control, soil nutrition, moisture conservation, and water-wise initiatives. Trials and errors in gardening have given us some highlights as well as lowlights, but it’s been a fun learning curve, and given a greater appreciation of home-grown produce. The garden has sourced donations of garden supplies from local agri-businesses, and received grants and funding from Bendigo Bank and Intereach to make it the functional space it is today. Regular visitors to the garden have welcomed the green hub, and are able to wander through the community plots to pick vegies for a small donation. Users of the pool facilities, Rocket Park and Lagoon walkway praise and appreciate the ongoing efforts, as do visitors of the Kookaburra water tower. We would like to thank the wider community for their support and encouragement, and appreciate the drop-ins and connections we’ve made. We would also like to thank Edward River Council, MacDonald Farms, Eastern Tree Services, Re-Gen Farming, Bendigo Bank, Intereach, Mark Wilson, Paul O’Donnell, Hume Colville, Tim Van Lieshout, John Russell, Bill Johnston and Chris Burn for their generous donations and support. 07.01.2022 SPRING BABY IN THE GARDEN This baby magpie sat in this tree for an hour this morning while mum chased the hawks away. Finally it flew to the safety of the eucalyptus trees in the garden while mum watched from the electricity wires outside the garden. It was a case of ‘I think I can’ as we watched it almost stall in mid air, but thankfully it made it to safety. Watch our for mumma on the corner of Whitelock and MacCauley. Also another one next to McFaulls Lagoon on the Wellington Street end. It comes from behind.
