20.01.2022 At its last meeting, State Council has resolved to change the qualifying criteria to be eligible to the following: 18.8.b A combination (club member and horse) ...wishing to participate in a pony club section of a competition or any other activity (other than supervised rally or instructional activities) hosted by a pony club, must achieve the minimum number of qualifying rally attendances: i. Junior senior and adult riding members - two mounted rallies by the combination within the preceding 12 months effective September 1st 2020 This means that effective immediately, Juniors, Associates and Adults now only need two attendances to qualify. Juniors previously required 5 rallies. This change is intended to simplify attending Pony Club competitions, particularly in light of the reduced opportunity due to COVID restrictions. In other news, State Council has elected to change the name of 'Associate Membership' to 'Senior Membership' to better reflect the age group.

17.01.2022 EDITED TO ADD FURTHER INFORMATION A COVID SAFE RETURN TO EQUESTRIAN ACTIVITIES Equestrian Victoria (EV), Pony Club Victoria (PCV) and the Horse Riding Clubs... Association of Victoria (HRCAV) are committed to ensuring the health and safety of our members and community. We continue to remain engaged with all levels of government and industry bodies around the COVID-19 situation, providing you with the latest information as it translates to our sporting landscape. Following Friday’s announcement by the Prime Minister, Scott Morrison about the national 3-step recovery plan, and this morning’s announcement by the Premier of Victoria, Daniel Andrews there is now a gradual easing of government restrictions that will allow the resumption of SOME equestrian activities. From 11.59pm tomorrow evening (Tuesday 12 May), outdoor recreational activities can be undertaken in groups of up to 10 participants, subject to social distancing and hygiene measures being implemented. This means members may now: - Ride off property - Travel horses locally and regionally including for training/coaching but no overnight stays - Participate in outdoor training/coaching activities with a maximum of 10 participants Note: i. Riders should check with venue as owners/managers who may have venue specific restrictions ii. Social distancing (1.5m) and good hygiene MUST be maintained iii. These allowances are for outdoor areas only no gatherings for recreational activities indoors are permitted iv. Groups can be no larger than 10 (plus the coaches and helpers required to run the activity). More than one group of 10 can be present on a venue at the same time, if the different groups are physically well separated on different parts of the venue. No other facilities except toilet facilities may be used. v. An indoor gathering refers to a gathering within a single enclosed area (i.e. an area, room or premises that is or are substantially enclosed by a roof and walls, regardless of whether the roof or walls or any part of them are permanent, temporary, open or closed). Members may continue to: - Have coaches, farriers, trainers, vets, and other equine professionals attend your property - Attend agistment centres to care for horses subject to venue owner/manager specific restrictions The approach to activities/training should focus on ‘get in, train, get out’, minimising unnecessary contact in stables, toilet facilities, and any communal areas. BE SAFE, CAUTIOUS & APPROPRIATE. The Premier’s announcement is effective until 11.59pm 31 May, by which time we should have a more detailed plan that we can build upon to support the return to events and competitions here in Victoria, guiding our sport out of this crisis. We understand the desire from members to return to group activities and competitions as soon as possible. EV equally shares this desire and we look forward to further announcements by the Victoria government over the coming week(s). We will release a more detailed and a stepped plan once we have that information. The equine community is well positioned to move through the federal government and AIS frameworks. However, it is likely that modifications will be required to some of our current resources to mitigate additional risks related to COVID-19 based on government advice. We thank you for your continued support during this challenging period and encourage members to contact the EV, PCV or HRCAV offices (as appropriate) if we can be of any assistance with advice or support. Please note, that our office hours and days have not changed since our last announcement. Let’s all continue to exercise caution we don’t want to take a backward step just as we begin to move forward. 07.01.2022 THE LIGHTHORSEMAN A TRIBUTE When Australia joined the war against Germany in 1914, there were 23 Light Horse Regiments. The Light Horse were seen as the ‘na...tional arm of Australia’s defence’ and young men flocked to join. Many brought their own horses and some even brought their dogs. Recruits undertook a riding test which might include riding a horse bareback over a water jump and sod wall (a grass bank) or jumping a log fence. A strict medical test was undertaken also. Their uniform issued was AIF jacket, cord riding breeches, leather ‘puttee’ laggings bound by a spiral strap (gaiters) and the famous Australian Slouch hat and a distinctive leather bandolier that carried 90 rounds of ammunition. A solder would be paid by the government around $60 for using their own horse if it were at standard. Those without their own horse would be given remounts called ‘Walers’. They were called Walers because they were New South Wales Stockhorse types strong, great hearted animals with speed, strength and stamina. Each horse was branded with the initials of the purchasing officer, government broad arrow and an army number on one hoof. The Waler would often be carrying up to 150 kilos over long distances in searing heat, sometimes at gallop and sometimes without water for 60 or 70 hours. The men would build unimaginable bonds with their horse as they came to depend on them for their very lives. Unfortunately, the Light Horse would not be able to return to Australia after the war due to Quarantine regulations. Many soldiers had planned to buy their horses back from the Army. An order was issued to have the older horses shot, as horrible as this seemed, many men thought this would be better than leaving their horse behind to be cruelly treated. The Light Horseman will be remembered for their mental qualities, discipline, their gifts of adaptability and earned the gratitude of the Empire and admiration of the world. LEST WE FORGET

03.01.2022 It's crafty Tuesday and here's a suggestion for keeping your saddle and stirrups clean and stop them rubbing - using a double oven mitt. You can either buy one ...from a store like Target or KMart, or make one yourself. If you want to try your hand at this, here's a video to help you. Note, you won't need the double insulation layers in the middle if you are not planning to use it to take hot items out of the oven. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQD_7gNyKtE We are sure many of our members have great ideas for making or recycling horse products and could share a 'crafty Tuesday activity. We'd love you to send your ideas to us so we can share them!
