22.01.2022 Happy Dental Health Week 2020! Being healthy is something that most of us aim for. We brush our teeth twice a day. We go for a jog around the neighbourhood. We eat a handful of nuts instead of chomping on a chocolate. We see our doctor whenever we dont feel well.... But are you aware that all your good work could be being undone by sugars lurking in the depths of many of the processed food items you consume? Sugar is everywhere in supermarket staples, even some that might appear to be healthy on the surface, and so this Dental Health Week (3 - 9 August | dentalhealthweek.com.au), were pulling back the sugary curtain to show you whats really in the food you eat, and how this information can help you be healthier all over but especially in your mouth In other words, we want you to become more sugar savvy Dental Health Week is an annual event run by the Australian Dental Association which aims to make everyone aware of the key things they need to do to keep their teeth and gums healthy. Stay tuned for all the latest this week!

22.01.2022 Get sugar savvy! You might think that a little extra sugar here and there isnt such a big deal, but the odds are that you are taking in far more than you realise Figures show that the average Australian is consuming 14 teaspoons of sugar a day, a whole lot more than the maximum six teaspoons a day recommended by the World Health Organisation ... This extra intake of sugar leads to decreased health benefits such as increasing the risk of tooth decay. To help you get within the recommended range, and be healthier into the bargain, this years Dental Health Week is all about showing you what daily sugar consumption level looks like in relation to the food you eat, how to read a food label so you can see whats really in your food, and how sugar can negatively affect your dental health. Beyond that, we want to show how easy it is to keep your teeth and gums healthy by following a few simple tips: Brush twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste. Clean between your teeth once per day. Visit your dentist regularly. Consume no more the 6 teaspooons (24g) of added sugars per day. Come back tomorrow for more details and tips! dentalhealthweek.com.au

Our team can get your teeth into tip top shape so you can enjoy your Christmas! 02 9344 8822 to book in. https://maroubradentalavenue.com.au/general/white-fillings/

14.01.2022 Weve all heard that our eyes are the windows to our souls, but what we dont usually hear is that our mouths are the aisles to our hearts Over the years doctors have been able to link certain oral health factors to conditions of the heart. Chronic gum conditions such as gingivitis and periodontitis foster bacteria in the mouth which can find their way into the blood stream, and head to our hard-working hearts. Even without noticeable gum inflammation, poor oral hygiene ...and accumulated plague could lead to a strained relationship between mouth and heart. Tips for keeping heart and mouth happy are: Ensure you are brushing twice a day, for 2 minutes. Ensure that you are brushing the area where your gum and teeth hug each other, also where your teeth touch their neighbours, as these areas are where plague will feel comfortable in accumulating. Floss, floss, floss. If you find there is some bleeding while flossing do not let this deter you! Bleeding is the gums way of showing you bacteria is in the area. The more you floss the less your gums will bleed. Visit us! A regular cleaning by our lovely hygienist Kim will help keep you up to date with your oral health and will give us the chance to caution any signs of gum disease we might see, and help get your gums back on track! It is our priority to keep your oral health as optimal as we can. Give us a call on 02 9344 8822 to book in today! Let us look after you!

13.01.2022 Theres something special about the way we do things at Dental Avenue. Our patients always come first We understand that each of our patients is unique and we strive to reflect their individuality in their smiles. Every patient has their own story behind their smile, and we love to see a little part of us in the happiness that comes through those ear to ear grins.

13.01.2022 Get sugar savvy! Read the label. No added sugar does not necessarily mean sugar free. Beware: Products that claim no added sugar can still contain a LOT of sugar What about natural vs. added sugar: can they affect my teeth the same? The answer to this is yes. However, foods such as fruit and milk are made up of small amounts of natural sugars as well as fibre, vitamins and minerals which are good for the body! ... Milk also includes calcium, which can help to protect the teeth and bones. Processed foods with large quantities of added sugar often have no or limited nutritional value. Theres no need to be concerned though! Come in and say hi have a chat to us. It is a good idea to have a clean at least twice a year (in fact we highly recommend it!) since it means your teeth will get the consistent care they need. One survey revealed that 65% of Australians have not seen a dentist in the last two years. Yup, thats right two whole years. Sure, thats extra time for catching up on Game of Thrones but is it good for your teeth, and the health of your whole mouth? Not really. You should really be seeing us every 6 to 12 months, or as needed to keep on top of your dental health. If you need to attend more regularly, we will let you know. At your regular check-ups our dental professionals check for tooth decay and gum diseases. They also assess all your soft tissues as well, and give you all the dietary advice you need to keep your teeth and whole mouth healthy. dentalhealthweek.com.au

13.01.2022 Get sugar savvy! Sugar consumption is important to oral health. Tooth decay is a diet related disease. Certain mouth bacteria that live on the surface of teeth consume the sugar we eat and turn it into acid. The acid sits on the surfaces of the teeth and pulls the minerals out from the tooths surface causing it to weaken. This process happens every time we eat and drink. If these acid attacks occur over and over again and there is not enough protection provided to the tee...th, this can result in tooth decay A good way to protect your teeth is to brush them If youre like most people, theres not a whole lot of brushing going on. In fact, only 50% of Australians brush twice a day The reality is that a quick, occasional dash along your teeth with a hope and a prayer is not going to cut it. As our dentists and hygienist will tell you, you need to brush for at least two minutes twice a day taking care to use a soft-bristled toothbrush (theyre less damaging to your teeth and gums than their harder counterparts) to clean your teeth systematically along all surfaces, always brushing in small, circular motions. It is important that your toothpaste contains fluoride. Remember to replace your toothbrush very 3 months as well. An easy way to remember when to change it is to go by the new weather season! dentalhealthweek.com.au

12.01.2022 As part of Dental Avenue Maroubras community service, we provide education to other health providers such as what Dr Edward Chin and Kim, our dental hygienist, did recently. They visited St Lukes Care in Potts Point to provide education to community care workers about the oral health considerations in older people, as well as how to prevent dental and oral diseases. The carers were very grateful for the presentation and found it interesting and engaging as it did not only apply to the people in their care but also for themselves and their family. Is this something that youre thinking of doing for your community? Contact us on 9344 8822 and speak to our friendly staff to find out how. #DentalAvenueMaroubra #dental #communityservice #StLukesCare #OralHealth #dentist

11.01.2022 Get sugar savvy! Sugar intake is the single-biggest cause of tooth decay. Beyond limiting the sugar you eat, we recommend drinking more tap water and to avoid snacking between meals. Instead stick to three meals a day and concentrate on the good stuff like vegetables and dairy products Of course, before you make any major dietary changes, first check with a healthcare professional Three key sugar messages to take from our 2020 Dental Health Week are:... 1 - Consume no more than 6 teaspoons (24 grams) of free sugar per day. Free sugar is defined as added sugars, as well as the sugar naturally present in honey, syrups and fruit juices This recommendation does not reference sugar from fruit, vegetables or dairy. 2 - Choose foods that have less than 10 grams of sugar per 100 grams You will find this information on the Nutrition Information Panal located on the food/drink label. Less than 5 grams per 100 grams is ideal, though if a food or drink item has greater than 15 grams per 100g of sugar, it is best to find a healthier product. This is like a percentage. 10g per 100g = 10% sugar in the food. 3 - Look out for hidden sugars when purchasing foods and drinks Look out for these in the list of ingredients located on the food/drink label. There are over 50 different ingredient names which represent sugar. These include examples such as: cane juice, caramel, glucose, malt syrup, maltodextrin, sucrose and treacle to name a few. We hope that you all gained some tips this dental health week on how to look after your pearly whites a little better Remember we are here for you always, so give us a ring to book in, and let us do what we do best and look after you dentalhealthweek.com.au

05.01.2022 Here with James and Giulya this week for some more surgical draping! We love our blue here at Dental Avenue. It signifies sterility of the patients surroundings, and maintains the utmost hygienic practice for our surgical procedures. No other dental team can pull off these surgical gowns like we can!

05.01.2022 Get sugar savvy! Another way to protect your teeth is to floss. Flossing (or using an interdental brush) once a day is important because it removes plaque from between your teeth which goes a long way in helping to prevent gum disease, tooth decay and halitosis ("bad breath"). Its not something that should be rushed either. We recommend flossing once a day. Start flossing childrens teeth once they have two teeth touching side-by-side. Take your time, using a gentle side...-to-side motion with about 45cm wound around your middle fingers and thumb. If youre not sure about the right technique, have a chat to our hygienist Kimiko who can show you all the right flossing moves. She can also advise you whether floss or interdental brushes are best for your teeth, as well as the best technique for these products. Yay, thanks Kim! dentalhealthweek.com.au

04.01.2022 Announcement from Dental Avenue After much consideration, a decision has been made that we will be temporarily closing our dental practice from Friday the 27th of March 2020 until further notice. Our decision has been made based on the recommendation of the AHPPC and adopting the guidelines from the Australian Dental Association NSW that are driven by the recent increased risk of community transmission of COVID-19 reflected in the increase in the number of confirmed cases in ...NSW. The health of our staff, dentists, and patients are our priority. We believe that our temporary shutdown will assist in flattening the curve by preventing the spread of COVID-19. Shutting down comes at a huge financial cost but we believe that health is wealth and is what matters the most at this time. If you have an appointment booked in with us during this period, our staff will be in contact with you to reorganise your appointment. We are still here to lend an ear during this difficult time. Our phone lines will remain open so feel free to contact us on 9344 8822 if you require emergency dental services such as significant dental infections or trauma; or for any concerns or queries about your dental health. However, non-essential treatment will have to be postponed. We also encourage you to check our website for updates (www.maroubradentalavenue.com.au). At a time like this, our priority is our communitys health and keeping loved ones safe. Thank you for supporting Dental Avenue. We appreciate your understanding during this difficult time. We are optimistic that we will all see each other again soon when the world has beaten this pandemic. Wishing you good health always, Drs Tony Saad, James Digges & the Dental Avenue Maroubra Team

03.01.2022 When was the last time you replaced your toothbrush? If you remember from our August Dental Health Week, an easy way to remember when to change your toothbrush is to go by the new season! Seeing as its Spring, now is the perfect time to get yourself onto this new routine Some other tips to keep you and your family safe and healthy are:... Never share your toothbrush. Store toothbrushes upright if possible so they can air-dry faster after use. Rinse your brush thoroughly with tap water after use. Childrens toothbrushes may need to be replaced more often than every three months. Keep an eye on the bristles, and if they have begun to fray replace their toothbrush. See more

02.01.2022 Thanking Dr. Chins patient Mick who brought in the most amazing Blue Moon Rose for Rebeckah this week. We have never smelt anything so breathtaking!

02.01.2022 Nobody wants to have work done on their teeth, so there are several steps you can take to prevent dental caries or dental decay: Being careful with how often you eat sugary foods or have sugary drinks. Brushing and flossing your teeth carefully to reduce the amount of bacteria on their surfaces. Using fluoride toothpaste. This will make the surfaces of teeth more resistant to acid. The fluoride in our water supply strengthens the developing teeth of infants and children.
