13.01.2022 Have you got an old amalgam filling that was done 10.. 20.. 30.. 40 even 50 years ago? You might be surprised to learn that your tooth looks very similar to this one! Metal fillings undergo thermal expansion and contraction when exposed to hot and cold foods and drinks. This places internal stresses on a tooth and often leads to hairline stress cracks and tooth decay. With time these microscopic cracks will propagate and without warning part of your tooth may unpredictably ...fracture off. We see cases like this on a weekly basis and more often than not these teeth make for a tricky surgical extraction. We prefer to remove the defective amalgam filling(s) before it fractures and place a cosmetic composite resin or ceramic restoration to protect the tooth. Here is a case that Dr McShane completed earlier this year. Can you spot the 10 stress cracks in the photo? If you have a tooth or two that looks similar to this one we encourage you to make an appointment to have your tooth assessed for cracks today! Call our friendly reception on 4031 2400 or book online at www.dentalonmartyn.com.au

11.01.2022 DO YOU OR FAMILY MEMBERS SMOKE CIGARETTES??? Heres yet another reason to kick the habit and quit smoking. Aside from the detrimental oral and general health effects of tobacco smoking the habit could be costing you more that you think.... A Tasmanian grandmother recently conducted an experiment with her grandchildren to highlight the cost of smoking by purchasing basic foods items for the same price as a pack of cigarettes. We think the photo speaks for itself!

04.01.2022 **COVID-19 UPDATE** Over the weekend we made the difficult decision to close our practice for routine dental treatment. All dental clinics in Australia have been advised by the Australia Dental Association, under their COVID-19 guidelines, to cease all non-urgent dental treatment. This means that any dental procedure which can be delayed for 3-6 months, especially those using air and water spray cannot be performed as they create an unnecessary risk to your safety, our safet...y and the safety of the broader community. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. To all our patients that weve had to reschedule your treatment we would like to again thank you for being so understanding. For any patients with an upcoming appointment we are in the process of contacting you to reschedule your treatment. Rest assured we are still OPEN and seeing patients for emergency and for relief of pain appointments. Please contact our practice on 4031 2400 if you need to make an appointment. Please note that online bookings are unavailable at this time. Our office hours have temporarily changed to: - Monday Thursday: 8:30am-1:00pm - Friday: 8:30am 12pm We hope everyone stays safe wish you and your loved ones good health. Thank you for your patience and understanding, Michael Turner and the team at Dental on Martyn.

03.01.2022 An orthopantomogram (OPG) is a panoramic x-ray of your whole jaw which your dentist uses to radiographically examine the overall condition of your teeth and their supporting structures. Often, certain diseases which have no clinical signs and symptoms are detected as an incidental finding during these routine dental x-rays. As such, the current recommendation is that an OPG x-ray is taken every five years for screening purposes. 7 Reasons your dentist might request a whole mo...uth x-ray: 1.General assessment of dentition and supporting structures teeth, bone, jaw joints and sinuses. 2. Prior to: extracting teeth, fabricating denture(s), implant planning and placement. 3. Assessment of wisdom teeth. 4. Assessment of periodontal disease and underlying bone loss. 5. Examination of temporomandibular or jaw joints. 6. Detection of any bony pathology - cysts, tumours and broken jaws. 7. Assessment of developing adult teeth in children. Whilst whole mouth x-rays may show advanced decay lesions in teeth they often lack the high resolution required to detect early decay lesions. Therefore, your dentist may also recommend intra-oral or close-up x-rays to assess for dental caries. For more information or to make an appointment call our friendly team on 4031 2400 or book online at www.dentalonmartyn.com.au.
