24.01.2022 Product Review: DIY Dental Calculus Remover Given the current shut-down, many of us are looking for things we can DIY at home. This product appeared in my social media feed a few weeks ago and I made a purchase. Im generally a sucker for appliance advertising, but I promise this purchase was made purely to investigate the effectiveness and safety of this product so I could report back to my patients. Dental clinicians use ultrasonic instruments that look a little like this p...roduct. Our instruments use vibrations to clean calculus (tartar) off of the teeth, in conjunction with water spray. The water reduces friction-related heat and flushes gunk from the treatment area. My Dental Calculus Remover product took several weeks to arrive, which is understandable in the current world situation. I paid USD$29.99, including postage. I charged the item using the enclosed USB charging cable and cleaned the item with clinical detergent (because germs!). The tip is very pointy so precise, controlled movements would be needed to avoid damage to teeth and gums. The cleaning tip is not interchangeable, so this device should not be shared with other people. Like most people, I tend to accumulate some calculus on my lower front teeth (dont worry, no pictures). I was a bit nervous about my precious teeth especially in the absence of water spray and TGA approval, so I started with LOW power. No calculus was removed. As I stepped-up the power to HIGH, unfortunately there was still no calculus removal happening not even a little bit. So I charged the unit for 24 extra hours (in case I got it wrong the first time). No improvement in performance. I contacted the retailer by email to advise that the unit doesnt work in this dentists hands, and to request a refund. They advised me (surprise, surprise) to keep using the product. I replied that I would not keep using the product and that I would pursue the matter with my credit card issuer if the retailer continued to stall. No answer. So now I have my credit card refund and a first-hand opinion of this product to share. I'm unable to recommend buying this item. It has the capacity to do harm if used incorrectly, and was entirely ineffective at cleaning my teeth so why risk it? Dental On Clarke will resume offering professional teeth cleaning as soon as government restrictions allow it, so stay tuned!
