However, it has been found that long term high levels of drinking alcohol increase the risk of oral cancer. 02.01.2022 Surprisingly, athletes are more likely to have poor oral health due to many different reasons such as dry mouth from physical activities which lead to issues such as gingivitis. The University of College London did a study with some athletes to see if minor changes to their oral hygiene such as increasing the dosage of the fluoride in their toothpaste, would help with this situation. The study found that they not only were able to increase their oral hygiene levels, but they found that they reduced negative effects on their athletic performance.
