15.01.2022 CARS AND TEETH AND RESPONSIBILITY I have an old Pajero, and it's been taken to some guys who looked at it and charged me a few hundred dollars for a service very six months. But there was a wheel bearing noise and they said they could not find anything wrong. So last week they must have been shut down, so I took it to a franchise mechanic and they found the problem, told me two tyres were had it, told me they would need to replace some filters and parts and replaced the beari...ng the stub axle and ABS sensor and $2600 later it was back in my hands. 10 times normal service cost. How many times does this happen in dentistry. I suspect these guys judged me as an old guy with a Pajero I use just to take to Moreton Bay Islands, and that because of that I did not want to spend the money. And that is a shame, because - like a lot of patients- we prejudge and - particularly I suspect young dentists -tell them what we think they want to hear. When a lot of them may seem to be wanting it cheaply, and most people just want to be taken care of. So just because you think someone does not want a full honest opinion, well, that's not a good place to start a professional relationship is it ? If you are a practitioner, join the private group for discussion.. https://www.facebook.com/groups/dentalegalmanagement/

15.01.2022 30th November is coming... DON'T get caught out. Have a read of the guideline. (http://www.dentalboard.gov.au/Codes-Guidelines/CPD.aspx) The old assumption that any CPD will do......... no longer applies from December 2015....... The guideline says... You should choose activities that demonstrate the following characteristics: open disclosure about monetary or special interest the course provider may have with any company whose products are discussed in the course the scientific basis of the activity is not distorted by commercial considerations. For example be aware of embedded advertising and direct commercial links the learning objectives, independent learning activities and outcomes articles from peer-reviewed journals and/or be written by a suitably qualified and experienced individual address contemporary clinical and professional issues, reflect accepted dental practice or are based on critical appraisal of scientific literature the content of CPD activities must be evidence-based where relevant, select CPD activities where you can enquire, discuss and raise queries to ensure that you have understood the information if the CPD activity includes an assessment or feedback activity this should be designed to go beyond the simple recall of facts and seek to demonstrate learning with an emphasis on integration and use of knowledge in professional practice, and an opportunity to provide feedback to the CPD provider from participants on the quality of the CPD activity.

14.01.2022 That you to all who expressed interest in a Time Management Course for dentists. The initial materials would be presented on a single day and realistically not to more than say 20-25 participants. If there was sufficient interest, then there can be repeats and then additional material on 'Scheduling for Production' These would be the topics covered in a day of presentation and small groups.... MORNING - CONCEPTS Goal setting A lifetime of Work ? A year a month, a week, a day. Holidays weekends and long weekends Realistic Use of time Prioritising Procrastination in dentistry Systems in dentistry Opportunity Cost AFTERNOON - PUTTING IT TOGETHER Applying these principles to a full work year Introduction to Scheduling Introduction to Nett Hourly Rates Strategies for Consistency I think that a location near an airport would be useful for people attending and I would think that one can be arranged in September. I would assume a Saturday is best ? Ultimately, I prefer to have CPD at a location that is interesting such as a lifestyle location, but I will be guided by those who are interested. The fee for a full day will likely be between $700 and $900 plus GST depending on where I can locate the meeting. It is the sort of information that you can make a return on that investment (including your time and travel) implementing a small number of these principles. If you are interested please click on the Email Signup link at left.

12.01.2022 A short video about consent.... This and more at Bondi on June 14 2019. Tockets at https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/communications-consent-and-

10.01.2022 A lot of dentists struggle with the three essences of prevention in dental practice. And by prevention, I mean Consent Clincal Records and Communications. Communications if effective will actually prevent a lot of complaints being made AT ALL if managed well. Similarly a proper Consent process will prevent complaints being made AND will assist with successfully having complaints dismissed.... Clinical Records if done professionally will be the best last line of defence and can also assist with successfully having complaints dismissed. If you are not sure you understand the ongoing consent process, you should watch this short video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEL2fBU7z3g But how do you actually DO it ? If you think you might need some help in understanding this process and how to include it in your practice as part of the process, then you might want to take a day out and get this right. After delivering this material for some years this now includes role playing examples and recording the evidence of the consent process. If a patient or a regulator asks, you will be able to show you observed a set evidenced logical process... Details and tickkets here... https://www.facebook.com/events/610091419414155/

07.01.2022 Infection Control Management Plans (ICMP) QUEENSLAND ONLY As a result of some changes to legislation recently in Queensland, dentists are subject to new scrutiny and regulation pursuant to the Public Health Act (Infection Control) Amendment Bill 2017, which is yet to be in force, although it has passed through parliament in May. The substantive provisions are already in effect, however, the new changes increase powers....Continue reading

06.01.2022 AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND DENTISTS DESTINATION CPD -CBCT FOOD AND WINE 2019 In 2019, I'm proposing to run some courses together with Prof Paul Monsour. Paul and I are thinking that at least one course will be in New Zealand at a winery destination in the first half of the year.... The courses will be largely clinical with some legal input from me. They will cover cone beam theory, limitations, interpretation and jurisprudence in relation to cone beam imaging. The point of difference with these courses are that they will be in a destination that will be attractive to dentists particularly those who like the outdoors and/or wine and food, and most likely will be in the Martinborough (not Marlborough) area north-east of Wellington, and on Waiheke Island in Auckland Harbour. If you have not been to either of these locations then this might be a chance to get some quality CPD from acknowledged experts and see some wineries and have some food that I know to be great experiences. If you have been there, you will probably want to go again. Details of the courses will be forthcoming but if you are interested then please feel free to join the Dentelligence mailing list, and once the dates are fixed you will be advised of an opportunity to register. PAUL Paul is the genuine article. Professor Paul Monsour graduated from the University of Queensland in 1978 with a BDSc (hons). He completed a PhD in Oral Biology in 1987 and a Masters degree in Oral Radiology & Pathology in 1991. Professor Monsour was the first registered specialist in Oral & Maxillofacial radiology working in full time private practice on the East coast of Australia. Professor Monsour lectures extensively throughout Australia on all aspects of DMF radiology. Appointed the Foundation Professor of DMFR at the University of Queensland in 2009. Paul is an associate member of the RANZCR and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. BRAD Brad Wright is a counsel at the Queensland Private Bar. After a career in dental practice and business, he was called to the bar in 2011. He has interest and experience in health practitioner family, and administrative law and trial experience in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal of NSW and Supreme Court and Court of Appeal in Queensland. He has appeared in QCAT, NTCAT, and NCAT and VCAT in administrative law matters, and trials in the Federal Circuit Court and the Family Court. He has acted as Counsel for Independent Childrens Lawyer. A large part of his full time practice is dental practice related, specifically, AHPRA, Dental Council, OHO, Employment Law and Commercial disputes between dentists. He is an Accredited Mediator and an Arbitrator. He also knows a bit about wine.

06.01.2022 Changes in legislation and policy mean dental practitioners are under increasing pressure in relation to audit of records and infection control. Failure to meet standards at an audit can be catastrophic. However, proper processes can be introduced to protect against these risks. Dentelligence is operated by Brad Wright a dentist and legal practitioner with 30 years of dental practice management and legal experience to help practitioners before they have problems.... Whether you are buying or selling practices, or are unsure whether your infection control or records will stand up to a health fund or regulator audit, seek professional informed expert consultant advice. Services include practice valuation, due diligence advice infection control audit and dental record audit. Message to make contact and enquire about services and affordability.

01.01.2022 Thanks to those expressing interest in the CBCT Food & Wine in NZ (working title). We are thinking March or April and I await Pauls availability before booking a venue. Will revert back soon.

01.01.2022 PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE As a lawyer since 2006, and practicing including health law as a barrister since 2011, I see so many missed opportunities for dentists to prevent the cost of litigation and regulatory intervention, as well as preparing for intervention from increasingly aggressive health funds. These are in relation to infection control and clinical records....Continue reading
