15.01.2022 Are bamboo toothbrushes better? Are electric toothbrushes better? Are rubber bristles better? These are some of the questions I get asked about toothbrushe...s from practitioners and patients. A lot of science has gone into toothbrush design over the years. I could get into a deep discussion about the pros and cons of brush size, handle shape, bristle taper or oscillating vs sonic,.... I could totally geek out on it actually! I once worked for a toothbrush designer. Toothbrushes exist to remove microbial plaque that forms around teeth and gums that can cause dental disease. The biggest determinant of success of toothbrushes is actually just using one for two minutes twice daily around all teeth. Because 50% of Aussies don’t even brush twice daily and 70% have some form of dental disease according to Australian Dental Association data. If the bells and whistles of a power brush mean your kid will brush for longer - it’s a winner! Or if the eco story of a bamboo toothbrush means you’ll use it more than a plastic one, if that feels good to you - it’s a winner! Please note however that the bristles of a bamboo toothbrush are not biodegradable: They’re either nylon - same as all other brushes, or may be a partially plant-based plastic called PLA that fray really quickly with use. Happy brushing people! Your smile will thank you #justbrushtwice #toothbrushdesign #befacewell See more

13.01.2022 Kombucha is very popular these days but has an approximate pH of 2.5-3.2. To compare, soft drinks have a pH of approximately 2.3-2.9. Tooth enamel will start to... erode at a pH below 5.5. Kombucha has been hailed as good for gut health (among other things) and that may be true, but is another example of linear, rather than holistic thinking. Most think good for gut health, therefore good for me. But a key question in any health decision is what else is this seemingly healthy choice doing to the rest of my body?. It could be argued that if a drink has the ability to erode away the hardest substance in the body (tooth enamel is approximately 10x harder than bone), then to call it truly healthy is debatable. I would be looking to restore gut health in other ways without the collateral damage of tooth erosion which can result in pain, sensitivity and weakening of teeth. From a dental standpoint, this is definitely a very ‘occasional’ drink as much as I like them. Swipe to see some pictures of advanced tooth erosion See more
