25.01.2022 "He said a recent survey of more than 600 children from inner Melbourne preschools found that just over one-third of the children had evidence of decay." See this article in the SMH. The same stats will apply to Sydney

24.01.2022 Our Dentists are on the move!! Dr Payam Yazdani and Dr Steven Tran have been out and about in our community educating on dental prevention at the request of local kindergartens. We thought we would share their message. Our aim for children is for them to achieve a full set of permanent teeth with no fillings and a healthy and good looking smile.... Your childs first teeth are important as they maintain the space for the permanent teeth and premature loss is likely to result in crowding and the need for orthodontic treatment. Unfortunately the decay rate of our younger children is now higher than their parents experienced. This change is due to misunderstanding how diet pattern impacts on decay rates. To prevent decay for your child a few simple steps are required: Look in their mouth regularly for anything that looks unusual e.g. change in colour of teeth or any chips in teeth Clean their teeth morning and before bedtime Let your children see you cleaning your teeth morning and night Get educated on how diet pattern affects tooth decay and what is important Visit a dentist. Children should see a dentist before age 3. This is the best way to get educated about the factors relevant to your child. Some tips to prevent decay: Do not put your child to bed with a bottle containing anything other than water Do not dip a dummy in honey or any other sweet products Limit juice to once a day. Do not use juice or cordial as a thirst quencher Aim to develop an eating pattern of a maximum of five times per day Only drink water between eating times Remember: Prevention is the best form of treatment

20.01.2022 Do you think it is fair that your health fund pays a higher rebate for the same service if your visit their preferred provider? Is this limiting your choice?

19.01.2022 Planning for Retirement What about your mouth!! Are you getting close to retiring from the workforce or have you retired already? Have you thought about the requirements and costs of your future dental treatment? For your general health people believe if the money runs out they may fall back on the public Medicare system. For dentistry the ... availability of government funded dentistry for adults is very limited and means tested. So, what should you do to plan for retirement? We suggest some simple steps to start with. 1. Know what is in your mouth? Do you have gum disease? Are your teeth heavily filled? Do you have cracks developing in your teeth or restoration? Ask your dentist for a guesstimate as to your future dental needs. 2. Get educated on how to minimise your future needs by preventing decay and gum disease. 3. Be aware of changes that may occur to your lifestyle that will impact on your mouth for example: The impact of medication on saliva flow and the consequences on decay rates The significance of diet pattern decay rates Some future treatment will be unavoidable due to the wear and tear on often heavily filled mouths. You can however, have a zero decay rate with education and good home care. In short Your dental examination is a good way to Come and get educated

16.01.2022 At Dentists on Starkey we bulk bill children who qualify for the Childs Dental Benefits Scheme (CDBS). This scheme will allow your child to access quality dental treatment and more importantly receive preventative treatment and education to maintain excellent oral health. It is concerning that the uptake of the scheme appear to be only 25% according to the article in todays Heraldhttp://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCMQqQIwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.smh.com.au%2Fnational%2Fonly-25-of-eligible-children-in-new-medicare-child-benefits-scheme-offering-free-dental-care-20141220-1290at.html&ei=xZqWVN3CDKPUmAWUwYDADA&usg=AFQjCNH6qUv_ym7aUaD20zEuEYy0rLuw7g&bvm=bv.82001339,d.dGY .

09.01.2022 Food for thought. Do you have the self control to retain the premiums saved so that it will be available when needed. You will certainly be better off if you manage your dental health so that prevention is your focus! http://synstrat.cmail19.com//2DA0D7CFCD9DB8A5148F9D201EEB5

09.01.2022 An article published by News Corp on 25th April 2020 with in relation to the question 'Can I get a Dental Check' - during COVID 19 with Dr Kathleen Matthews, President of the Australian Dental Association, NSW.

08.01.2022 To All our Patients We are now operating under ADA Level 2 restrictions, having been dropped from Level 3. This means we can offer a wider range of services to our patients. The surgery will have a dentist present every morning. We encourage our patients to have their regular examinations. The logic being that delaying examinations until a vaccine is available may be a very long wait. If you allow your dental health to deteriorate you may require more complex treatments as a ...result. If in doubt, please phone and discuss your situation with our team. Under Level 2 restrictions we are unable to do teeth cleaning. We will defer treatment for any persons who: - Has been overseas or interstate in the last 14 days - Fever, cough, runny nose or is unwell - Loss of taste or smell - Contact with a COVID 19 or suspected COVID case in the last 14 days. We encourage all our patients to download the COVIDSafe App to their phones and bring your phone to your appointment.

08.01.2022 Great review from Jess Brougham..."Exceptional! Professional, friendly, and wonderful with children. Highly recommended."

07.01.2022 Great review from Mimi... "My child found a cavity and then poked it with a toothpick which then broke off lodging it in her tooth! Dentists on Starkey squeezed her in straight away and fixed it all up. Steve was brilliant with her and made her feel really reassured. They have been looking after our 3 kids since we moved into the area and they are great with kids of all ages, even kids with sensory processing concerns."

05.01.2022 World Oral Health Day - When was your last check up?

05.01.2022 SLEEP APNOEA Are you feeling unrefreshed after what should be a full nights sleep? Is your partner complaining about your snoring?... Do you feel tired during the day? If you have answered yes to any of the questions above, you could be suffering from a condition known as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). OSA is a medical condition that can increase your risk of developing other serious medical conditions such as a stroke, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or even a possible heart attack. OSA can also increase your risk of having an accident either in the workplace or while driving your car. If you are showing any of the above listed signs or if you feel that you could possibly have OSA, call us TODAY, to organise a screening with one of our Dentists. If you have already been diagnosed with OSA, our dentists may be able to help you by making a custom oral sleep apnoea device to wear at night. This device will help open your airways and allow you to breath properly whilst you sleep.
