23.01.2022 What a wonderful day. We did another in community visit with one of our kids who really needed a break from Telehealth. Then we saw another of our amazing hoomans on a special visit. It was a super day and we’ve told Chelle we need more of this for us and the kids. It’s a good break from seeing each other on the computer. 13.01.2022 This afternoon was hard for Denver. Chelle hasn’t been as strict with the rules and consequences at home and well of course we’ve taken advantage of that. I guess today’s not so good choice by Denver means the rules will come back pretty strict again. I’m a bit annoyed at him for mucking it up for us both, all because he didn’t stop and think. He just saw the butter and his belly said get in me. The rest is history now. On the upside I get Chelle all to myself tonight now because I didn’t break the kitchen rule. 10.01.2022 This is the power of animal assisted therapy! Why would you want to be a part of a relationship with an adult human when the adult humans had let you down consistently, not been there for you, not helped you with your big feelings nor protected you when you needed it. In these experiences adult humans can’t be trusted even though you desperately wanted the connection and somewhere deep down probably hoped not all adult humans were the same. Imagine then having to go into th...erapy with a stranger who was an adult human. Not surprising that you might ignore the therapist completely in the first session that only last 20 mins. But why does she have a dog? That dog is cute... I might draw her. End product a portrait of the anxious and relationally sensitive therapy dog with her own issues with adult humans from her history. In subsequent sessions the therapist just lets you form a relationship with the dog albeit at a distance and on your terms. This human is different, not safe yet just different. Fast forward 5 sessions and today you find yourself drawing a picture. First you draw the therapist with super attention to detail and you delight in telling her it’s her. Your face beams at her reaction of pure pride. Then comes the dog. You wonder then why your therapist is beaming a smile at you as you add yourself to the picture. This is the beginnings of a team, a therapeutic relationship and connection. You don’t know that your therapist is excited beyond measure that you are learning to trust humans and that the dog helped you do this. When human connection is hard because kids are hurt in the context of human relationships an animal can afford a relationship in which to begin, if not completely heal. #denverthetherapydog #callythetherapydog #animalassistedtherapy #animalassistedinterventions #animalassistedpsychotherapy

09.01.2022 Denver here... I’m not going to lie I am tired and I didn’t want to go to work today. I just wanted to play. I didn’t want to have to say anymore goodbyes. 10 goodbyes in the last two weeks Chelle and the kids keep saying it’s bittersweet to have to say goodbye. ... Sweet because the kids have done all they need to in therapy and they don’t need us anymore. Bitter because we have to say goodbye. Cally and I sure are super proud of all our young hero clients and especially those who have just finished up with us. We love that you let Chelle and us become a part of your life, we respect the trust you place in us and we feel so lucky to be able to help you find your way in making better choices and managing your feelings. Especially the ones you thought at the start of therapy you needed to get rid of. But now you know all feelings have a job. Even though we are saying goodbye we won’t forget you and when we feel sad because we miss your sessions we’ll think of all the pats and giggles and fun we had. We hope you remember those to and all the skills you learnt! For those of you who said goodbye... have fun, grow up awesome and create a future that touches the lives of others. For those of you still seeing us... get ready to stop us because even though we aren’t supposed to we are going to want to give you all the licks you missed this year and be ready to give us all the pats and ear rubs we missed. 07.01.2022 Oooh this is heaven. It’s so so so good to have you all starting to come back to the office. Since we’ve started back with some face to face sessions the feelings have been big. Big because the kids have missed us, they’ve missed Chelle face to face and boy have we all missed them. Excited to be back. Happy to see each other again. Even some confusion as we work out what face to face looks like while we still battle Covid-19. You know what... you kids have all grown so mu...ch and some of you even look different. 06.01.2022 Getting ourselves settled into the new office. Change is tough and this place smells different even though it has all our stuff in it. We've just taken it easy trying to get used to the new sounds and smells and we check in with Chelle regularly to help us with our big feelings about the change. 05.01.2022 We are busy at work getting used to the rules at the new office before we go back to face to face sessions. One of the rules for all the kids who come and see us will be wearing a mask. We are going to ask all kids seeing Chelle to wear a mask when we are at the office no matter your age. You see we can get Covid-19 too and if we get it we can give it to hoomans. The problem is that scientists are saying if we animals get it we might change the way the virus works and the...n give hoomans a new version of it. That’s the last thing we want to do when we almost have it under control in Victoria and Australia. There’s a whole heap of other stuff Chelle will be doing to keep us all safe including wiping us down after every session and making sure you guys wash your hands and use sanitizer like we always have. 02.01.2022 A lot of people ask Chelle what therapy dogs do and how they help... well we asked one of our kids and this is what they had to say. * Our presence is reassuring * We give good cuddles * We ground the kids because they can feel us and smell us and are always moving and wriggling a little bit and that helps bring kids back to reality. * We make the kids feel wanted because we are always so very happy to see them and want to lay on the couch with them ... * We do hilarious things that make kids laugh * We listen to the kids and make them feel heard because of how deeply we look into their eyes when they tell us stuff * We make kids feel like they have control over something when we follow commands and do what they want us to do and that's really important when our kids feel so very out of control So there you go everyone - that's some of what we do. 01.01.2022 Another farewell today to one of our amazing clients. Our kids occasionally leave Chelle speechless and sometimes their stories, their struggles and their journey make her cry... Today we saw her cry and be totally lost for words as one of our awesome kids said goodbye to us with this hand drawn gift. I don’t know if we give you a sense of us in these posts, but for anyone who has sat in a room with us, anyone who has spent anytime with us will be able to look at this pictu...re and know that this kid absolutely captured our personalities. The attention to detail and the drawing in and of itself is awesome, but the facial expressions to capture Cally’s worry and alertness and my chilled out approach to life is amazing. Again we were so very sad to say goodbye, but so incredibly proud of this young person and their journey. Thank you for letting us be a part of your story and your journey.
