20.01.2022 Following the finalisation of a takeover of Thomas Foods - Australia's potato business, and a spike in demand during COVID-19, SA's Mitolo Group is now the nation's largest potato producer. The Adelaide-based company has potato and onion farms in the Riverland and Mallee regions of SA, and is reporting a 10% increase in demand for its potatoes since the beginning of the pandemic in Australia. 19.01.2022 Researchers at The University of Adelaide are exploring the use of machine learning to diagnose endometriosis in a less invasive way than current methods like keyhole surgery. Reproductive health exports at the Robinson Research Institute are teaming up with the Australian Institute for Machine Learning to teach computers how to search scans for signs of the disease. Currently, gynaecologists with additional training can use ultrasounds to detect endometriosis, with some surgeons also using MRIs to plan their operations. Using AI has the potential to combine the two practices, giving doctors access to information that hasn't previously been available. Read more: https://bit.ly/3najIrP

19.01.2022 Boutique hotel group Lancemore Hotels has been selected to operate a new $30 million hotel planned for Port Adelaide's tallest building. 16.01.2022 Regional tourism in South Australia is set to get a boost, with an aquatic park in a waterfront upgrade, bush food trail, and jet ski park on the way. A water park will form part of an $8.5 million upgrade of Cowell's waterfront, set to include water slides, a water play area and a nature play space. Also part of the upgrade will be a 32 berth marina, set to be completed in January. Cryoclock has been working with BAE Systems over the last 18 months, testing the development of the Sapphire Clock, which will enhance the Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) Phase-6 capability through the integration of the Clock a...t three JORN radar sites across regional Australia. The Sapphire Clock uses time to measure distance, and is so precise that it gains or loses only one second every 40 million years. 11.01.2022 Adelaide-based medical company Nova Eye Medical has launched a new subsidiary to develop a treatment for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) @AlphaRET, the subsidiary, will support the commercial development of 2RT nanosecond laser therapy technology to treat the disease, which is the most common cause of blindness in the developed world. 07.01.2022 With world class wine and hi-tech credentials, it's no surprise that South Australia's wine-tech capabilities are also making headlines. SA based Consilium Technology is a machine learning, modelling and digital-twin simulation specialist firm, and they've been applying their capabilities to the wine sector. In 2019, Consilium’s agtech product GAIA identified and mapped all of Australia’s vineyards using AI and satellite imagery. Using machine learning algorithms, GAIA autom...atically scanned high-res satellite images of Australia’s wine regions to identify exactly where the vineyards are located, and how many vine rows are planted. The data was then used in Australia’s National Census of Vineyards. The scan was the first of its kind in the world, and replaced the old Australian Bureau of Statistics' paper-based sector survey which was last reported in 2015.
