19.01.2022 Today, April 4, marks 91 years since the Briseis Mine Cascade Dam disaster of 1929. After three days of heavy rain (sound familiar?) the dam, constructed during... the 1920s on the Cascade River above Derby, broke. Fourteen people died from the resultant wall of water that ran down the valley and hit Derby. This photo, published in the Weekly Courier on April 10, shows 'the main street of Derby after the cataclysmic deluge. The water rose to a height of twelve feet, and the high-water mark can be seen on the wall of the hotel'. John Beswick's book 'Brothers' home' devotes a full chapter to telling the story, and it is well worth a read. See more
