25.01.2022 CYCLONE SEASON Residents in the North West have been told this year's cyclone season is predicted to be a bit quieter than last year's, but they're still being urged to take it seriously by preparing their homes and putting together an emergency kit.

24.01.2022 Are you ready for cyclone season? Now is the time to prepare.

23.01.2022 CYCLONE SEASON OUTLOOK The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting a slightly lower than average number of cyclones to form off the West Australian coast d...uring the 2018-19 wet season. But Brad Santos, the severe weather services manager with the BOM, says that doesnt mean people can get complacent. You should now be making prepartions for the season, he says. "The actual number of cyclones we expect isnt important what is most important is that it only takes one cyclone to chance your life or community." Remember that the stretch of coast between Broome and Exmouth is the most cyclone-prone area in Australia. 02.01.2022 Is there a relationship between tropical cyclone size and intensity? In 1974 Tropical Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin, taking 71 lives and destroying most of ...the citys buildings. Although Tracy crossed the coast as a Category 4, it was a small, slow-moving system with the radius of gale force winds only 46 km. On the other hand, Tropical Cyclone Orson, which made landfall as a Category 5 system near Dampier in WA in 1989, had a huge 340 km radius of gale force winds. Despite Orsons extreme intensity, damage was relatively minimal due to it crossing over a sparsely populated region of WA. It just goes to show that cyclones of any size can be dangerous. You can read more about the meteorological characteristics of cyclone Tracy in our blog: http://ow.ly/BZme30mnyHu ABC Emergency Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA
