25.01.2022 Its Spring now it’s time to prepare your property for the fire danger period Landowners and tenants should be preparing their properties well before the start... of the Fire Danger Period. A lot of things can be done in the garden and around the home to improve the chances of surviving the impact of a bushfire or fast moving grassfire. Now is the time to clean up leaves, twigs, bark and long grass around the home and farm properties as fires cannot be lit in the open air during the Fire Danger Period without a written permit from CFA or a Municipal Fire Prevention Officer. During the pre- Fire Danger Period clean up, if you plan to burn those piles of fallen branches, bark and leaves, call the VicFire Burn-off notification line on 1800 668 511 to avoid an unnecessary fire brigade callout. Once the Fire Danger Period has been declared in your municipality by CFA, lighting a fire in the open without a permit can attract a penalty of $17,000 and 12 months imprisonment. There are even greater restrictions for Total Fire Ban days due to the greater risk of fire. To view or download the Can I or Can’t I brochure, go to the CFA website www.cfa.vic.gov.au or call 1800 226 226 See more

22.01.2022 The Royal Australian Mint has today launched a commemorative coloured $2 coin to honour those who battled the horrific 2019/20 summer bushfires. The $2 coin wil...l feature a blaze of orange in the centre, with female and male fireys either side of it, looking ready for action. The Royal Australian Mint created the $2 coin to recognise the determination and commitment of our firefighting communities across Australia in battling the terrible conditions that confronted them. The Mint also announced $125,000 of the proceeds from the sale of the coins will go to fire and emergency service organisations across the country, including CFA. CFA’s Acting Chief Executive Officer Catherine Greaves said CFA is extremely grateful to the Mint for recognising the incredibly important work our members do in protecting lives and property. This coin will reach communities across the country and will highlight the risk our members take each and every day to keep Victorian communities safe, CEO Greaves said. CFA Acting Chief Officer Garry Cook said the Mint’s generous monetary contribution will go towards purchasing and maintaining brigade firefighting equipment. We are always very grateful for any financial contributions made to CFA it allows us to boost our critical firefighting equipment which further increases our ability to protect our community, CO Cook said. The new $2 coin has been made available to the banks for circulation across Australia. A version of the coin will be made available in a packaging card for coin collectors. The Mint will also be hosting a small exhibition over the summer months in Canberra to honour Australian firefighters. There will be a collection of notable objects on display, including these commemorative $2 coins, as well as a number of other medals and coins made by the Mint over the years to honour firefighters. CFA is encouraging its members and the community to try and purchase one of these commemorative firefighter coins as a special memento to hold onto. The timing of the release of the coin is a great reminder to those living in bushfire prone areas to prepare themselves and their properties for the upcoming fire season.

18.01.2022 Do I have to clear around my campfire or solid fuel barbeque? Yes. You need to keep a three-metre air and ground perimeter around your campfire. Use a designated fireplace where provided. For campfire safety rules and regulations, go to www.ffm.vic.gov.au

18.01.2022 A BIG THANk YOU: Dereel Fire Brigade would like to thank Brett Marciniec & Rokewood Hotel for finding time (with no notice) to somehow whip up burgers & chips meal packs (x15) for our firefighters on scene at the local fire last night. The hotel was flat out with patrons and at last minute, on a quick phone call, we were able to put together a feed that was very welcome to the firies on the ground.... There is nothing worst than getting a call that last several hours right before planning for or having a chance to eat dinner. Everyone was hungry and very happy to see the boxes of food roll up. Thank you Rokewood Hotel, Brett & Mandy (for making sense of our needs & order)

15.01.2022 Fire Action Week, 19 to 25 October, is Victoria’s annual fire planning and preparation awareness week. Fire Action Week is a time to increase your understandi...ng of the fire risk where you live, prepare your property, and talk to your loved ones about what you’ll do to stay safe from fire. Making informed decisions is vital to your safety during a fire. Now is the best time to understand your fire risk and get prepared. Restrictions are in place across Victoria due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. To find out more about what restrictions apply in your area including provision for those who’ve received a Fire Prevention Notice visit https://coronavirus.vic.gov.au/. Reducing the vegetation around your home is one of the most important things you can do to keep your home safe in a bushfire. You need to register any burning off of cleared grass, weeds or undergrowth. You can do this online at https://firepermits.vic.gov.au from 31 October. This week, talk to your family, friends and neighbours about the fire risk where you live and make plans for what you’ll do on hot, dry, windy days.

14.01.2022 Today CFA brigades were called to a number of out-of-control burn-offs If you're using the great weather to clean-up your property for fire season, make sure ...you conduct your burn-off safely. A burn-off, if not extinguished properly can re-ignite days after the original burn. Keep your burn-off safe and legal: Check fire restrictions with your local council and register your burn on 1800 668 511 Check and monitor weather conditions particularly wind To avoid unnecessary calls to emergency services, notify your neighbours beforehand Leave a three metre fire break, free from flammable materials around the burn Have sufficient equipment and water to stop the fire spreading Never leave a burn-off unattended stay for its entire duration If your burn-off gets out of control, call ‘000’ immediately

11.01.2022 Did you know? With a little notice, you can now register your burn off online!!! Here is some very useful information for members of the community that know they plan to burn off on their properties.... Registering your burn off is important as it helps to limit unnecessary responses by fire brigades and members to non events. We strongly recommend all community members register their burn off regardless of the time of year. It’s a great habit to get in to. Many properties in our community are very proactive with this. The following link and information will help you continue to be so if you already are & help make the process easier for those who want to start doing so.

08.01.2022 Burning off grass, stubble, weeds, undergrowth or other vegetation is generally permitted outside the Fire Danger Period. Local laws on burn-offs can apply year...-round. Check with your local council before lighting up. Before burning off: > Check and follow local regulations or laws set down by CFA or your local council > Notify neighbours at least two hours before starting the burn > Notify the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) on 1800 668 511 > Check the weather forecast for the day of the burn and a few days afterwards > Check the fuel moisture conditions Establish a fire break of no less than three metres cleared of all flammable material > Make sure there are enough people to monitor, contain and extinguish the burn safely and effectively. Register your burn-off All burn-offs should be registered with ESTA on 1800 668 511. Please provide the following information about your burn-off when registering: > Location > Date and expected start and finish times > Estimated size > What you intend to burn Unregistered burn-offs can cause brigades to be called out unnecessarily.
