Thanks Oscar and Ben for sharing your excellent model of 58 RM with us.

19.01.2022 We don't 'do' fireworks for New Year's Eve, we save them up for Australia Day. But one thing that we have done since 1871, is to ring the Alfred Bells in the To...wn Hall Bell Tower. You may not know it, but there is a dark history to these monster bells ... Ballarat Town Hall Bells consist of 8 bells, the lightest (treble) 254kg, and the heaviest (tenor) 1117kg. The bells themselves were purchased to "speak out in loud sonorous tones about the loyalty of Ballarat". The reson for their installation rests largely upon the extraordinary attachment Ballarat had for the Roval Visit of H. R. H. Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh in December 1867. On 12 March 1868, Ballarat residents discovered that an assassination attempt had been made on the Prince’s life while he was in Sydney. Much to their horror, the assailant was a Ballarat man, Henry James O’Farrell. Fortunately, the Prince survived the ordeal, the bullet ricocheting off his braces. The people of Ballarat were so distressed by this turn of events that money was raised to purchase a set of memorial bells to dedicate to him. Learn more and hear the Bells being played at: http://www.hulballarat.org.au/cb_pages/townhall-stop10.php

19.01.2022 Today's historic photo of the day: Preserved VR railmotor 58RM runs a suburban tour near Mount Waverley, Vic, July 2 2011. Yes, this photo is of a somewhat more... recent vintage than most featured here, but its subject matter is historic nonetheless. In 1928, Victorian Railways introduced the first of a fleet of lightweight self-propelled petrol-fuelled railcars. They were designed to operate lightly trafficked regional branch lines where they could run faster and at less cost than steam hauled trains. Based on designs from the USA, they were successful, and between 1928 and 1931 a fleet of ten were built. Known originally as PERMs (Petrol Electric Rail Motors), these beasts ran to all corners of the State including places like Whittlesea, Warburton, Healesville, Mornington, Stony Point, Cohuna, Ultima, Robinvale, Leongatha and just about anywhere else you might like to imagine. In the 1950s they were re-equipped with diesel engines and were thereafter known as DERMs. Remarkably, even after the withdrawal of passenger rail services on many rural lines and contraction of the network in the 1960s and 1970s, the DERMS continued serving Victorians often being pressed into service on mainline commuter services from Melbourne to places like Bacchus Marsh, Werribee and Sunbury, and on longer mainline trips from Melbourne to places such as Seymour. Inevitably, time caught up with these ancient warriors, and their last run in regular passenger service was in 1991. Remarkably though, nine of the ten DERMS have survived. Four are currently operational with tourist railway operators, and another three may be returned to operational status pending restoration. On this day, 58RM was running a tour of the suburban Melbourne rail network carrying rail enthusiasts. The trip here is seen on an outbound jaunt to Glen Waverley just on the up (west) side of Mount Waverley station. Such trips are by no means regular events, but they are arranged occasionally, so keep your eyes open for advance notice of tours from groups like DERMPAV. Normal service of historic photos from the 1980s will resume tomorrow.
19.01.2022 Hi Everyone, In 1922, Harold Hamilton and Paul Turner started the Electro Motive Company, this company sold a line for gasoline (petrol) powered rail motors, these petrol engines turned a main generator which supplied power to two traction motors in the lead bogie of the car. The first two cars were completed in 1924 for the Chicago Great Western Railroad and the Northern Pacific Railroad. They went into service proving their worth. The idea of a petrol electric transmissio...Continue reading

14.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Here are a few more snaps of 58 RM passing through Bannockburn on Saturday That we have received from Rebecca Baker. She wrote, The first image is in the morning, and the last 2 on it's return in the afternoon opposite Bannockburn Station Cafe. There was some discussion on the local Facebook Community Noticeboard as to whether the DERMs came through Bannockburn when there used to be passenger trains here, but I think we concluded that there were Walker rail ca...rs instead, does that sound right? It was great to have you come past, and please thank the crew for their generous toots Cheers, Bec Baker Yes Bec that is correct the connecting passenger train between Ballarat and geelong was indeed a Walker Rail motor. Many thanks for sharing your images here with the DERMPAV Facebook community. Regards DERMPAV

We hope you enjoy the coming festive season, this is a good time to reacquaint with family and close friends, a time to come together in our usually busy lives. I know I have given this photo a run last year, but it is the only DERM related photo I have with seasons greetings. It was done by our member Sara who runs our instagram page. I pinched it off her last year. So, here it is a again, I hope she doesn't mind! The photo is of Driver Steve and Colin after they completed the Barnes section of the insights tour in 2013. I took that photo. So, please stay safe and we look forward to seeing you all again in the New Year. Kindest Regards Colin Kelly Secretary DERMPAV
13.01.2022 The Diesel Electric Rail Motor Preservation Association of Victoria (DERMPAV) offer our sincerest condolences to all those affected by the recent passing of long time Central Highlands Tourist Railway member Mr John Madigan. John was instrumental in the development of the successful railway that is now located at Daylesford and now carried on by others. It must be remembered, that those that pass on are never really forgotten they will remain in our memories to be recalled in the future. Good work to you all, stay safe in these difficult times. Regards Colin Kelly, Secretary, DERMPAV.
13.01.2022 Hi Everyone, On numerous occasions the Victorian Railways have looked over its boarders into New South Wales and of more recent times South Australia, with a view to purchase an off the shelf locally built rail motor for use in Victoria. A purchase has only been successfully made on one occasion. It is always sensible to view what the other state railways have done to service their passenger offerings, before committing to a new design or to improve maintenance and operating... techniques. One such occasion occurred in the late 1970's when the aging fleet of Walker Rail Motors were reaching the end of their economic life. The rail motor section were campaigning for new cars. This resulted in officers of the department making the journey to Adelaide to view the cars on offer, this consisted of the Bluebirds and the Red Hen rail cars. These were both home built cars and were very reliable and very well built. they gave yeoman service. DERMPAV member Jim Flannery's father, Mick was the drivers union represnetative and was dispatched with the working party to examine these cars. The accompanying photos are provided by Jim showing the various railmotors that were examined. Although I understand that our considered purchase would have been from the Red Hen fleet. The Red Hens were powered by either a Rolls Royce or a inline 6:71 series General Motors Diesel engines, both were under slung engines. Our interest was in the General Motors engined units, as the 71 series engines already saw use in two Walker Rail Motors and the Diesel Electric Rail Motors. Although we never purchased these rail motors we can enjoy the photos and here they are. Our next heritage tour using 58 RM our Diesel Electric Rail Motor will be when we visit the tastes of the Goulburn Festival at Seymour, on the 19th Octorber 2019. So if you like a days outing enjoying wine, good food, street entertainment and heritage trains then this is for you! Tickets can be obtained using the attached link. Entry to the festival is free for DERMPAV passengers and a wine tasting glass is $15.00. We look forward to meeting you on the 19th. https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=529591& Regards DERMPAV

11.01.2022 The Tale of a Car Maker and a Toaster Manufacturer. In the beginning there was the steam locomotive, and during its reign, this mode of transport was supported by many locomotive building companies. 07.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Here are some of our photos from Day one of open day. It was certainly exciting looking at the various exhibits, and there were heaps to see and do. It was great catching up with Old work mates and even current ones. I would like to say that the Steamrail Victoria’s steam locomotives looked absolutely spotless, all clean and polished just what you would expect from a preserved locomotive they are a credit to them.... Here are the photos from today, hope you enjoy them! Regards DERMPAV
07.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Well, today was the last day of the Steamrail Open Day, it like the other two was an outstanding success, on so many fronts. I know I have already said this, but the Steamrail Victoria membership have really put in the yards to ensure their locomotives look spectacular, they really are a credit to them. It was also good to see so many females getting involved in our hobby, but not just that, but also the many younger faces of people who are out and about volunt...eering, promoting the aspect of the hobby that takes their interest. Adam from Steamrail Victoria was a classic example of that. DERMPAV operated a sausage sizzle, sold cans of drinks along with tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Although we are big kids at heart and still like playing with trains the event attracted a very large contingent of young people. Some of these became very concerned about the abrupt noise made by the steam whistles this lead us into selling our ear plugs and we did a brisk trade, there were many happy faces after the acquisition. Our Winton petrol engine although it is 98 years old was temperamental in its operation. On two occasions it failed to run. Our rail motor was open for inspection it was inspected by many. DERMPAV would like to extend its sincerest appreciation to Steamrail Victoria for the invite to attend this event. The whole event was a credit to their organizational team and they should be congratulated. Our Thanks is also extended to all the DERMPAV members that over those three days came along to help out, to those people we extend our heartfelt thanks. It was good to see V/Line represented with a reconditioned Vlocity train on display. I have included far to many photos but this was the atmosphere of the place and great things can be accomplished when we band together. I hope you enjoy the photos. We will see you all in two years time, unless you choose to come on our next heritage tour, this is an outer Suburban tour it will operate on the 12th April 2020. Tickets are now available for booking. Regards DERMPAV
06.01.2022 Hi Everyone, A sincere thanks to all of you that have, and continue to support DERMPAV heritage operations by purchasing a ticket on our heritage outing with 58 RM. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. We at DERMPAV are excited to announce that this event has SOLD OUT, we have no more tickets left.... To celebrate this auspicious occasion we have decided to post a photo, it is only fitting that it is by Ken Coram, it was taken in June 2015. It shows 58 RM returning from Murrayville on one of our Mildura extravaganza tours, these operated over three days of the Queens Birthday long weekend. I like this photo, as Ken has captured an image that is timeless, it was repeated all over the country network, A Diesel Electric Rail Motor serving the community of country Victoria, while the huge grain silo and the large tree stands silently bearing witness to this passing traveler. We opened the rail motor to the public and had a grand mother taking her grand daughter through for a look, she said the train was like an old friend, first you would hear its horn, then the headlight would appear over the horizon, and very shortly afterward it would stop at the platform and take you on! So enjoy the photo, the image conveys everything it is, and once again our thanks is extended to all those that have purchased a ticket on the Tastes of the Goulburn Tour, we look forward to welcoming you aboard as we head off on another adventure on the 19th October. Regards Colin Kelly Secretary DERMPAV

05.01.2022 Hi Everyone, It was great to have 58 RM out and about again on the mainline again after its failure at Moriac during its last outing. Today we organised a charter for our friends at the Rail Revival Alliance...Their motto is Putting the shine back on the rails. We traveled from our depot to Dunolly and return picking up people at Ballarat and Maryborough.... There were speeches on the Dunolly platform. Food was available and a brass band heralded our arrival and departure. It was a well organsied, peaceful event to raise awareness of the plight of country folk being connected to Melbourne with a fast and frequent train service. All in all the day went well As always here are a few photos taken by myself and my wife of the event. I hope you enjoy them! Regards Colin Kelly Secretary DERMPAV

04.01.2022 Hi Everyone, I have today received the photos taken by our member and photographer Mr Ken Coram. They are to ken's usual high standard. So we better get on and view them. Thanks Ken for continually recording the history of DERMPAV and covering the various events that we involve ourselves.... I would also like to extend my sincerest thanks to all the DERMPAV staff that worked tirelessly for the days they were able to attend, their help and assistance was greatly appreciated. Of course the event would not be possible without the general public who show an interest and gain enjoyment reliving past times when our Victorian Railways were great. Enjoy the photos! Regards Colin Kelly Secretary DERMPAV
04.01.2022 Hi Everyone, As we have not posted anything is quite a while, i thought it appropriate after I was trawling through some old CD's and came across this photo of H220 to post it up for your viewing pleasure. It was the largest tea kettle the Victorian Railways owned, it represented the pinnacle of steam traction on our V.R. I was told once, by I cannot remember who! that this photo was taken during the day and then doctored to make it look like it was taken at night with the ...headlight beam piercing the night. Regardless of the dark room trickery it certainly depicts urgency that H220 is going to get the freight through. The image also conveys, although silently, the pride that every railway man had to be part of the great organisation that was our Victorian Railways. Behold the photo of H220 on the main north east hauling another express goods train to the boarder interchange. It is everything it conveys. Regards DERMPAV.

04.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Today we, with our friends at the Seymour Rail Heritage Centre agreed to a bogie swap. The bogie swap was beneficial to both organisations. DERMPAV transferred to the Seymour Rail Heritage Centre a set of X Class steam engine tender bogies that had been repurposed as temporary transfer bogies to hold A, S, B and X class diesel electric locomotives while their mainline bogies are out from under the locomotive for maintenance work.... In return, Seymour Rail Heritage Centre transferred to DERMPAV a set of standard gauge W car bogies, these are the same as the trailing bogie that is located under the non engine end of a Diesel Electric Rail Motor. We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to Colin Rutledge, Kevin Wright and all those involved at the Seymour Rail Heritage Centre for their help and assistance in this transfer, and for their assistance when things did not quite go to plan. Here are a few photos of the transfer, please enjoy them. the transfer of these assets will be enjoyed by the two groups respectively. Please stay as safe as you can in these times of social distancing and isolation. Regards Colin Kelly Secretary DERMPAV

It was great catching up with Old work mates and even current ones. 01.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Our Tastes of the Goulburn Festival Tour was very well received by all those that came along with us to Seymour. We experienced a setback when our I.C.E. Radio screen went to heaven and we waited for a radio technician to arrive to carry out the necessary repairs to put it back in order. While we kept our passengers informed, they appreciated our situation and we extend our thanks to them for their patience.... This caused us a delay in our arrival to Seymour, we thank @metro trains and @V/Line for their help and assistance in putting us through their networks outside our train path, this help is appreciated in a fluid network. On our arrival our passengers enjoyed the Tastes of the Goulburn Festival, with the food, wine and street entertainment, those that attended the same festivals in years past thought it was getting smaller, but it was still enjoyable. 58 RM then commenced operating shuttle rides from Seymour toward Mangalore and return, by the end of the day we had carried quite a few people. We then departed Seymour heading for home, we arrived Southern Cross a couple of minutes early, said farewell to all our passengers, we thanked them for their support with them saying they would see us again. Then we headed back to the DERMPAV depot at Newport to put 58 RM away. We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to all our passengers for their continued support of our heritage operations, and demonstrating this support by purchasing a ticket, this ensures the success of our heritage operations. I would also like to thank all of the DERMPAV members that continually step up to help out, we were out in force at Seymour. Special mention should be made to Metro trains and V/Line for moving us through their respective networks on this day and lastly to the committee that organises the Tastes of the Goulburn Festival for hosting us again. As occurs during our heritage tours, people send us images of the day for sharing, we appreciate these as they often offer a different perspective. Normally I list these separately but since I have already received them I will list them here and post who took them in the description. Our thanks is also extended to those that sent them in to us. Regards DERMPAV
