25.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who supported our plant sale this morning. We hope to have more veggie seedlings (including different varieties) in coming weeks. We’ve left some ‘Thank you’ gifts to the community in front of our shadehouse outside the fence. Feel free to come and take a few for your personal use (your own or shared garden).
24.01.2022 Umbel (think umbrella) shaped flower heads attract beneficial insects to the garden. Here’s parsley flowers with ladybirds. Ladybird larvae love to munch on aphids, so are a welcome part of biodiversity in the garden.
23.01.2022 What’s with the weather? Can decide if it’s a bit hot or a bit chilli!
23.01.2022 I was watching a garden show on tv this afternoon where they were talking about sour sobs being an edible plant that often goes well in salads. Lol. When I was a child my brothers and I use to eat them until someone told me that dogs use to weeon them I never ate them again. But if they grow where that doesn’t happen apparently they have some good health benefits. I also learnt that portulaca is also edible and good for arthritis. I have portulaca growing so might give it a go
22.01.2022 Jobs to do #1... sow pumpkins, cucumbers, zucchinis and melons in pots or oversized punnets to get them started. The ground may be a bit cool to put out yet unless very well protected.
22.01.2022 When we get through this cold spell, and start having warmer days again, it will be time to plant tomatoes! Soil temperature should be 16C or above. Here’s a sneak peek at some seedlings grown by one of our members. A limited number will be available for sale at the garden over coming weeks to help us fundraise. Be sure to follow our posts for details.
22.01.2022 The weather seems to be warming, but soil temperatures are key to tomatoes making a great start. Things were looking promising, but adlftervthe recent cool spell a check this morning showed a soil temperature at our community garden of 14C. We’ll keep our tomatoes in pots just a little longer, until the soil temperature reaches 16C. They’ll happily keep growing there. If you’re in a hurry to plant, try making your own mini greenhouse using the tops of plastic bottles or other creative ways to create microclimates.
21.01.2022 Jobs to do #2... check your peach and nectarine trees for signs of leaf curl. We missed a few bits, so there are patches of curl leaf amongst the healthy leaves. If you only have a little, get a disposable glove and a bucket or container and remove the affected leaves. Place in the rubbish bin rather than the compost.
21.01.2022 If you want to reduce numbers of those pesky soursoubs and don’t want to spray, try hard to remove the bulbs as well. If you just pull up you’ll have many where there was one.

17.01.2022 Come down to the garden and grab a bargain (and a freebie)! Open until midday, most plants just $1 to $2!
15.01.2022 Okra green and red varieties available this morning at the garden.
14.01.2022 Want a cheap and easy way to grow extra tomato plants? All you need to do is remove some of the side shoots that grow between the branches and place them in some water. They will take root within a week or so. They can then be planted out. Hello free succession plants.
14.01.2022 The return to cold weather reminds us why it can be risky with early plantings of warm season crops. Not impossible though, a warm microclimate or selecting cooler tolerant varieties like cherry tomatoes can increase the odds in your favour. Busy potting up some earlier sowings, to discover a sneaky hitchhiker in an punnet of eggplants. No idea what cultivar it is when you’ve planted ten or more varieties of tomatoes...
12.01.2022 Free brassica seedlings at Dernancourt Community Garden this morning.
11.01.2022 Today’s tomato hint: The bottom leaves of a tomato plant can be removed, and the tomato can then be planted deeper as long as leaves stay above soil level. The plant will make extra roots from the stem! Ps... We still haven’t planted our tomatoes yet, waiting for the ground to warm up some more. ... Follow us on Facebook for more tips and an update when soil temperature is favourable. See more
10.01.2022 First warm season veggie seedlings including tomatoes and heirloom lettuce. Some plants need some TLC so going cheap! Trying to clear some space.
09.01.2022 Now we’re talking! This is a female flower bud on a ball type zucchini. Notice the swollen baby zucchini at the base of the bud. Tomorrow it will open, and hopefully the bees will do their work and we will be picking zucchinis soon.
09.01.2022 Flanders poppies planted across the front of the garden to commemorate Remembrance Day. Lest we forget.
07.01.2022 Did you know cucurbits such as zucchinis (pictured), pumpkins, melons and cucumbers have male and female flowers? So, we are pleased to see blooms on this zucchini but it’s a male flower so no zucchinis yet. If you look behind the bloom there is a stem, not an immature fruit that you’d see on a female.
07.01.2022 Warm season’s crops need warmth to germinate. Keen gardeners use cloches, mini greenhouses and other techniques to get a head start on the season. Compare these pairs on images of seeds placed on a heat pad vs seeds without artificial heat. Same seed packets, same potting media. It really does make a difference!
05.01.2022 New additions to our plant sale this Saturday October 3rd.
04.01.2022 Plant sale on till 11.30. come down and grab some stuff for your veggie patch.
03.01.2022 The garden is CLOSED to both members and visitors during the six day lockdown. We want our community to stay safe. HOME BASED ACTIVITIES: - water plants early during the hot weather. Wet leaves and hot weather in the evening promote fungal diseases, so if you have to water late, wet the soil only or do it early enough so leaves dry off before dark. - weed the garden... - tie tall tomatoes to stakes - prepare for planting by digging soil and adding compost. Bury your kitchen scraps deep underneath. - veggies that you can save seeds of to plant include pumpkins and cherry tomatoes. Note if they are F1 varieties the babies won’t be exactly the same - for fun you can plant pineapple tops, carrot tops and avocado seeds. Please stay at home. Use this time for preparation, maintenance and importantly relaxation. Check in with your relatives and loved ones and we will get through this together.
03.01.2022 These rosella seeds were planted on Sunday afternoon, given bottom heat and are up already. Incredible! Our Oca is also up and growing. If you’re keeping dry today, stay under cover and sow some seeds in pots. Pumpkin, zucchini, cucumber, eggplant, tomato, capsicum, broccolini would all be good choices.
01.01.2022 Here comes the rain again... oh hang on, that’s an irrigation system in our plant nursery!
