17.01.2022 We had the pleasure of attending this intimate seminar on freedom of speech by the esteemed Robert French. He was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in 1972, and appointed to the Federal Court in 1986, serving as a justice on that court until his elevation to the High Court. He also held a number of other positions during that time, notably serving as chancellor of Edith Cowan University, chairman of the National Native Title Tribunal, and on the Supreme Court of Fiji. He served as Australia's Chief Justice from 2008 to 2017. 10.01.2022 When waiting to meet Chief Judge Wager the security guard at the District Court makes a point to say She’s a lovely person, she’s always kind to everyone. She ...never talks down to anyone in court and makes sure everyone understands what’s going on. Part of this down to earth approach to the law may stem from starting her career at Legal Aid with then Director Len Roberts-Smith. Judge Wager said He insisted that everyone should be represented to the best of our ability regardless of their position and the strength of their case. It was wonderful training to have. In 2000 she was appointed as inaugural Magistrate of the WA Drug Court a position she particularly relished. The Drug Court was beneficial for everyone involved in the process, she said. It’s rewarding to see people shine, and the flow-on effect of helping an offender break the cycle of addiction and crime is fantastic for families and communities. Appointed Children’s Court President in 2018, Judge Wager was determined to make the court a more accessible place, campaigning to have more flag poles installed outside. There were two already the Australian and State flags but I eventually managed to get two more, for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. It’s important we acknowledge who we are dealing with: for many, English is not a first language and people may have language disabilities. A flag at the entrance and sometimes we flew a Gay Pride, Dockers, Eagles or other sporting club flag makes a court seem less imposing. In her new appointment as Chief Judge she draws inspiration from the oath taken by members of the judiciary which is inscribed on the District Court building: to do right to all manner of people according to the laws and usages of the State without fear or favour, affection or ill will. Those words are very important. They instil community confidence that those who come here will have their matters dealt with fairly, in a timely fashion and with respect.
