20.01.2022 Congratulations Brett Cooper - skipper of the SB20 @Aeolus and the Melges 32 Crusader - winning the Australian Sailing - Tasmania Male Sailor of the Year award.

18.01.2022 EXPORT ROO HOPS INTO LEAD IN THE SB20 AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP Michael Cooper has sailed Export Roo to the top of the leader board on the second day of sailing i...n the Harcourts Hobart SB20 Australian Championship. The day started in optimistic fashion with a gentle north easterly breeze giving Race Office Ian Ross confidence to get race four away, but after one beat to the top mark, the breeze fell away and the race was abandoned. After a long break, the south-easterly sea breeze started to fill in but it still wasn’t smooth sailing with the fleet copping course changes, two general recalls and several black flag penalties. Cooper was in fourth place at the start of the day, but as the wind intensified, he found the solid 15 knot breeze much more to his liking. We worked really hard downwind which is probably the hardest part of the regatta, getting the lay lines right and the gybe angles right. It’s really close though it doesn’t take much in this fleet to gain or lose a few places, said Cooper. Ross was tough once again on the start line with Brainwave (Clare Brown) notching up two black flags and losing the lead in the Women’s Division while The Imp (Andrew Smith) scored his second OCS disqualification, costing the team several places. After six races, Export Roo (13 points) carries a 3-point lead into the final day of the regatta ahead of (Ambition Sailing) on 16 points and Mind Games (Phil Reid) on 18 points. Honey Badger (Oli Burnell) leads the Youth Division while Karabos (Nick Rogers) leads the Masters’ Division and Cook Your Own Dinner (Felicity Allison) leads the Women’s Division. https://dssinc-results.org//summer/SB20auschamps/series.htm SB20 Class Derwent Sailing Squadron Inc Harcourts Hobart Sportsboatworld Tony Castro Yacht Design Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania Port Dalrymple Yacht Club Tamar Yacht Club Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club Words and images: Jane Austin

18.01.2022 MIND GAMES LEADS 2021 HARCOURTS HOBART SB20 AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP Hobart sailor Phil Reid (Mind Games) is leading the 2021 Harcourts Hobart SB20 Championship ...on day one of the 3-day regatta. Reid, sailing with Rohan Langford, Amelia Catt and Harry Gregory, started the championship in fine style winning the first race ten seconds ahead of Honey Badger (Oli Burnell) and Wedgewood (David Graney). Race Officer Ian Ross kept the mark boats busy with two course changes in response to the shifty and building breeze and kept the over-eager fleet on its toes by bringing out the U flag and then the black flag to penalise early starters. Langford, tactician on Mind Games, described a very happy crew. We are very happy onboard the boat, especially with the first race - it was very light and very fluky, and the westerly was fading; we were towards the pin end and had a good start and managed to port tack the rest of the fleet and go from there, said Langford. Mind Games was quick out of the blocks again in Race Two leading the fleet to the top mark from Wedgewood and Ambition Sailing (Chris Dare). Most of the fleet took the left-hand side of the course after the course change with Reid again leading at the top mark but Dare picked the shifts well on the last downwind run to score a solid win from Mind Games and Taz Racing Team (Will Sargent). Race Three started in a consistent 20 knots after a general recall. Most of the boats took the eastern side of the river with Ambition Sailing winning from 2Unlimited (Oli Nicholas) and Imp (Andrew Smith). Mind Games leads the championship on 11 points, with Ambition Sailing on 12 points and Karabos (Nick Rogers) on 15 points. Wedgewood leads the Masters’ Division, while Brainwave, skippered by Clare Brown, leads the Women’s Division and Honey Badger leads the Youth fleet. Race Officer Ross was impressed with the SB20 sailing on show. There are a few keen people in the fleet pushing for the black flag and keen to get their name on the trophy that’s for sure. We had excellent sailing from Chris [Dare] and his crew from Victoria and Phil Reid and the team from Mind Games, and it was great to see the two boats from the north of the state involved in the championship. They [the SB20s] are such a competitive fleet...I’m looking forward to another great day tomorrow, said Ross. Sunday’s forecast is for variable winds to 10 knots becoming south-easterly, 10 to 15 knots in the early afternoon. 17.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 L2H ENTRANT FOOTLOOSE You gotta love the determination of a small boat when they take on the challenge of the Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race. Th...e locally built Young 88, Footloose, just inspires you with what they achieve each year as they return to the race. Stewart Geeves and his crew first entered the race in 2010 and did not waste anytime showing the fleet what they could achieve in an 8.8 metre yacht. When you dive into the history of Footloose you discover that this boat is destined to make the finish line, no matter what! In 2010 Geeves had an outstanding performance in his first L2H race. Taking out the overall win Footloose was faced with an early challenge after breaking the tiller in Banks Strait. Quick thinking by the crew had the tiller repaired with gaffer tape for Footloose to continue racing to Hobart for the win. The Footloose crew were at the mercy of the tides and weather gods in 2013 when they spent 8 hours stuck on the hard after the start in the Tamar River. This did not deter Geeves, but when a gale force storm hit the fleet down the East Coast of Tasmania, Footloose was only one of seven boats to finish. With grit, determination and a whole lot of support cheering them on, Footloose arrive in Hobart to a very warm welcome. This will the 11th year for Geeves and his crew racing Footloose in the L2H and as a regular in the results I’m sure they will sail hard and fast to the finish. The last timber 12 Metre built, Gretel II represented Australia in the America’s Cup in 1970, skippered by Sir James (Jim) Hardy. At the time she was owned and campaigned by Sir Frank Packer. 06.01.2022 Near Perfect Conditions for Summer Sailing Race Six of the Combined Clubs Summer Pennant Series, the third in the Long Race Trophy Series, was sailed in almost ...perfect conditions on the River Derwent on Saturday. Race Officer Grant Sutton didn’t have a lot of wind to work with but managed to get three of the four divisions away cleanly in the forecast variable conditions of 2 to 3 knots. The Division 3 fleet was keen to get away, bunching up hard on the pin end with Groove (Will Justo) forced over the line before the start and Footloose (Stewart Geeves) also taking a penalty. In Division 4, Hornet (Neville Georgeson) timed her start perfectly in the light conditions, coming in on a port tack and winning the start convincingly. Sutton was confident that the breeze would fill in and sure enough a 5 to 10 knot south-easterly soon kicked in, building to a superb sea breeze which gave the boats an invigorating ride home. The Division 1 fleet’s course was to Storm Bay and return with the conditions suiting Chris Sheehan’s Melges 32, Assagai, who was first across the line, first on PHS and second on AMS handicaps. Midnight Rambler (Jory Linscott) and Intrigue (Don Calvert) continue their battle on IRC and AMS with Rambler winning both handicap categories in the long race. The Division 2 fleet sailed to Little Betsey Island and return. 42 South (Mark Ballard) had a great day on the water winning across the line from Pirate’s Pride (Peter Masterton) and Southern Swordfish (Ian Stewart), as well as winning on PHS and AMS handicaps, while Natelle Two (Glenn Roper) took out the IRC handicap from Frontline (Ian Snape). Divisions 3 and 4 sailed to Seacroft Bay, Piersons Point and home. Bryan Walpole’s Invincible was first across the line in Division 3 while Young Lion (Steve Chau) continued her good run to win on IRC and AMS, and Serica (Charles Peacock) won the day on PHS. Hornet was first across the line in Division 4 from Camlet Way (Stephen Mannering) and Innovator (Ian Smith / Dean Aberle), while Camlet Way won on PHS from Kindred Spirit (Peter Alcock) and Innovator in the long race series. 04.01.2022 2020 RONALD YOUNG & CO BUILDERS PIPE OPENER RACE 1 REVIEW Friday night’s Ronald Young & Co. Builders Pipe Opener featured impressive sailing talent for Division 1 and 2, with 36 boats starting the race in light variable conditions from Castray Esplanade. The earlier Cruising Division had much better conditions for the 4.05pm start, with 12 boats hitting the line in good pace and wind in their sails, overall a pretty uneventful start. Gretel sailed by Steven Shield took out b...oth line honours and PHS from the closely contested cruising group. The notable yacht in this race that had an outstanding performance overnight was the Division 1 Melges 32, Crusader, helmed by successful yachtsman Brett Cooper. Division 2 saw Stewart Geeves in the Young 88 Footloose, take out the IRC, AMS and PHS for the win. The warning signal for Race 2 today will start at 1.25pm hosted by the Kettering Yacht Club, with conditions looking perfect for fair weather sailing down the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. 02.01.2022 MIDNIGHT RAMBLER STEALS THE SHOW IN RACE 2 OF THE 2020 RONALD YOUNG & CO BUILDERS PIPE OPENER The sun came down to shine on the weekend of the Pipe Opener in it’s 52nd year. Conditions were beautiful and light in the Derwent River on Saturday morning, not at all similar to Friday night’s race with fluctuating winds and large swells. 02.01.2022 Summer sailing returns to the River Derwent Racing resumes on the River Derwent tomorrow with competition hotting up in the Combined Clubs Summer Pennant Long R...ace Trophy Series. At the half way point of the series, the pressure will be on the top boats to consolidate their positions including current Division One leader on AMS and IRC handicaps, Midnight Rambler. The boat has arrived back in Hobart following the cancellation of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, in what has been described as a logistical nightmare by crew member, Jory Linscott, who will be on the helm for this week’s race. Midnight Rambler is on 4 points on IRC, 3 points clear of both Intrigue (Don Calvert) and Fork in the Road (Gary Smith). Rambler is also sitting on 4 points in AMS ahead of Intrigue on 5 points and Fork in the Road on 7 points. The Division One fleet will be without B&G Advantage after the Mumm 36, owned by Bellerive Yacht Club’s Jeff Cordell, was dismasted in the recent TasPorts Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race, while Ian Johnston’s Zephyr Insurance Masters is also undergoing repairs after the boat suffered rudder damage in the same race. In Division 2, Natelle Two (Glenn Roper) and Frontline (Ian Snape) are equal on 3 points on IRC while Mark Ballard’s 42 South leads on AMS handicap on 4 points from Ian Stewart’s Southern Swordfish on 6 points and Frontline on 7 points. In Division 3, Young Lion, skippered by Steve Chau, leads the long race series from Footloose (Stewart Geeves) and Invincible (Bryan Walpole) on IRC and AMS handicaps, while Wayatih leads Division 4 on PHS handicap on 6 points, from Kindred Spirit (Peter Alcock) and Camlet Way (Stephen Mannering) both on 7 points. The forecast for the race is for variable conditions under 10 knots tending south-easterly 15 to 20 knots in the middle of the day. *Words / Images supplied by: Jane Austin
