23.01.2022 Quieter Market at Eumundi this Wednesday, but Mary and I still had a good day's trading.

21.01.2022 This is my latest attempt at a classical style portrait using acrylics rather than oils or pastels. At the moment I am looking at it very critically. I wondered, for example, whether I should have used a darker background so I checked that out using GIMP.(see second image.) In case you are wondering about the strings on the lute, I stretched a fine thread across the canvas with pencils underneath at the ends to lift it off the canvas. Then I wet the thread with paint and pressed it down to touch the canvas. I patched up the resulting lines with a fine rigger brush and a bit of scratching. By that time I felt I had fiddled around enough to call it a day.T

20.01.2022 Here is my latest painting. Acrylics on stretched cotton canvas. 56 x 70 cm.

18.01.2022 Facebook keeps reminding me of happy times spent at the Markets and commissions I have done as a result of working there. Meanwhile, I am trying to keep myself occupied painting and drawing, keeping the house tidy or joining Mary in activities like gardening.

18.01.2022 I have done quite a few pet portrait commissions in the past and would like to do some more. I painted this today to display on the Net and to get some more practice painting cats. (Acrylic on stretched cotton canvas, 50 cm x 60 cm.)

16.01.2022 I am missing drawing people "live" at the Markets. Even before the current crisis, however, I have often sat in front of our TV and doing lots of quick sketches in pencil or ballpoint pen. These can be inspired by what I see on TV or what I find in Google on my phone, art books and magazines and even my imagination. I am also working on improving my online presence.

16.01.2022 Here are some drawings I've done recently at Eumundi Markets and Caloundra Street Fair.

16.01.2022 Here is a quick sketch using the same model as last time, but in "Modigliani Style". She looks about as excited as I feel at the moment.

15.01.2022 Here is my latest painting. Not a commission, I'm afraid. Acrylics 50x60 cm.

13.01.2022 Just completed another painting - a quick impression of Spikey, a cute little dog.

13.01.2022 I get some funny requests from my customers, but have never had this onehttps://mymodernmet.com/photoshop-troll-james-fridman/.

12.01.2022 I am back drawing on-the-spot caricatures on Sunday mornings! Thanks to the generosity of the owner of Talented friends Gallery I have a spot along Village Walkway between IGA and Bulcock Street, Caloundra.

10.01.2022 After a fair bit of effort, I have put together a website www.deshowellartist.com.au. Currently, however, unless you have Brave, you cannot just type this URL and find it, SORRY! Hey! Wait a minute. The URL works here. Please click it if you want to take a look.

10.01.2022 Mary and I have had some good days at the Markets. Talented Friends Gallery has sold one of my paintings and to top it all, we are looking after Astrid, our youngest Granddaughter, for a few days!

06.01.2022 Work in progress? My current process is a bit torturous. I am painting over canvases I used years ago. They at least make a nicely prepared surface. I started painting some grassy wildflowers I saw the other day. (Mary and I went for a drive to Maleny. Inland from Caloundra. Height just over 400metres.) ) I put a dark hedge behind but it was overwhelming. I replaced this with the Glasshouse Mountains I knew were behind the hedge. Then I realized I would have two paintings on the same canvas. So at the moment, I am giving the mountains a foreground. It is a real challenge to give an impression of depth and distance, not to mention the height of the viewpoint. It is indeed a work in progress.

04.01.2022 Here is a painting a did a week or so ago. I hope some re-enactors like it. Acrylics 60x75 cm.

04.01.2022 I will be working outside Talented Friends Gallery again tomorrow (Sunday) morning in Caloundra.
