10.01.2022 In the first topic of the Design a Decade program we look at TIME; the different levels of Time and how to learn to use it best. Level 3 Time is defined as when ‘you act alone and you alone control when and if it happens’. We recognise that by the time a person leaves school nearly all their time has been controlled by others. And for many of us the only time we have spent doing what we should have to earn money, look after ourselves and plan for our future, is when someone e...lse has set the time for us to do it, so we have not developed a habitual pattern of discipline in how we use our time. Rarely at this age do we do things that are good for our future, preferring to do what feels good today. For some this continues as a lifelong habit that is difficult to break. But it is the use of this Level 3 Time that primarily determines our ability to build a great future. Only a few people naturally use this time well, so it is important to work to some structure and do exercises to create the right culture. Credit cards are not the answer... to anything. I read once that there's good debt and there’s bad debt. .... Good debt is where you are paying for something that will increase in value over time - like a house in a good location. Then there is bad debt where you are paying for something that will decrease in value over time - like almost all cars. Credit Cards have been a funny thing for me. I've always felt that I've been in control and to ensure that's the case, I never accept the letters for higher limits and always keep the limit to a minimum. Then, I just use the Credit Card like an everyday card and pay it back at the end of the week so I can accumulate points to cash in later. But now as I look back at the added time to reconcile the card against what my allowed spending should have been; the added pressure it caused when we spent more than we should have and the problems it caused when it would take two weeks (or more) to repay what I'd spent in a week. It's not worth it. For anyone out there that's looking at doing the same... My suggestion is to just make the switch and ditch the plastic. Change to use your Debit cards and only spend what you already have, not what you might have coming in next week. 05.01.2022 This is my third year on the Design a Decade program and I highly recommend it! Before I started the program I had been working freelance contracts in film and TV post production for about five years. While I was managing ok, I see now that I was living in the moment and not looking forward to my future or being held accountable in my finances. One main benefit of the Design a Decade program for me has been shifting my focus from just surviving, to planning and implementing ...what I can do now to set up my future well. And being a single person, another major benefit of the program is having a coach I've realised how important it is for me to be held accountable to things, especially in the area of finances. 03.01.2022 When it comes to wealth creation most people do not start early enough. And once they start they leave too much time between actions. This is primarily because they see wealth creation tasks as only about purchasing something big, instead of about breaking the process down into a succession of smaller tasks. It is important to then continually assess these smaller tasks as we complete them, and move on to the next small task. This will mean that the 'big decision' to purchase... a home, for example, will be a much more natural process. Talking about whether or not to buy a property, or what and where to buy, is almost a waste of time without sufficient information. It is possible to start breaking the ‘big decision’ down into smaller steps by asking yourself some strategic questions. Why not start with, Can I borrow, and how much? What would that buy? Once you know this, start looking with the view to buy. Smaller steps lead to wealth creation decisions. 01.01.2022 I started the Design a Decade school because I wanted to take responsibility for my life. I knew there were a lot of things I just wasn’t thinking about and I realised that no one else was going to be more invested in shaping my life than me. It hasn’t been easy, but with the support and structure provided I’ve made some huge changes. Design a Decade’s holistic approach has forced me to confront the way I handle almost every area of my life. It has helped me go from passivel...y navigating through life, to taking ownership of what my life looks like now, and what it will look like in the future. I definitely wish I had started this in my early twenties. I still have a long way to go but Design a Decade has truly opened up my world to possibilities that I believed were beyond my reach that freedom has been priceless and I am so grateful for it.
