25.01.2022 NEW WORK: Comfy Koalas eco nappies (3 of 3) A great product needs a great social media presenceone that is as useful as it is entertaining. I teamed up with @patchworkcactus to create content ranging from dad jokes, to koala facts, to a ‘poop quiz’. Career goals? YES. Head over to @comfykoalas account to see more of this grade-A content. . #comfykoalas #econappies #everypoopcounts

24.01.2022 Following the last post: New name, new brand promise. ‘Building with you’ sums up how yousta has always approached their customer relationships, only now this promise ties into the core of their branding. Seen here in and around the warehouse. Chris Perkins . #designandopinion #buildingbrands #smartcollaborator

24.01.2022 The third and final instalment in the pandemic survival series focusses on the mental dissonance created through being ‘alone together’, coupled with trying to return to a life which is not quite the same as before. Working on this series has really helped me make sense of my own situation, and has provided lots of ‘a-ha’ moments. I’m thankful to Linda Scott for trusting me to bring her expert knowledge to life, and also for inadvertently giving me a valuable mental health tool kit I will continue to reference for the foreseeable future! I hope you've found this series as helpful as I have. You can read the final instalment and/or download a printable A4 version at designandopinion.com/post/not-business-as-usual-part-three or read all three instalments at designandopinion.com/blog

23.01.2022 yousta is a Sydney-based construction supply company that has totally reinvented itself after operating for 25 years under a different name, with branding that hadn’t been updated since its inception (and that was never really ‘designed’ in the first place). I was approached to help bring their vision for the next 25 years to life. The results are a product of a deep collaboration between client & designer, and show what can happen when the design process is driven by both sides. More to come ... . #yousta #designandopinion #buildingwithyou

21.01.2022 1/3 New work: Dohnt & Co A bit of a delayed post about this project, but finally I’m glad to be able to share it here! Sometimes a client is so involved with a project that they become an extension of the studio. This was the case with Gregory Dohnt, who approached D&O to help him create a brand for his new executive search business. Everything was up for grabs, including the name. And everything that’s been produced since is the result of a close collaborationeach side push...ing the other to dive deeper, experiment further, test more. The result is a brand identity that not only helped Dohnt & Co immediately position themselves where they wanted to be, but has already been copied (badly) by a competitor. In Gregory’s words: Our partnership has been the defining relationship of 2018 for me. It’s lovely setting up a business, but you have made it a joy. . @germangee See more

21.01.2022 A little #tbt and appreciation post for one of my favourite projects to date, for Macquarie University Incubator. This building has won a swag of awards and it’s easy to see why. I still can’t quite believe I got to create the branding for such an innovative and stunning piece of architecture. . #designandopinion #macquarieuniversityincubator #environmentaldesign

17.01.2022 I originally wanted to become a graphic designer because I loved drawing cartoons. It’s taken 30 years, but my childhood dream was finally realised when I got to cartoon all over Macquarie University International College The best bit is that the people who use the building every day love these walls that teach as much as I loved making them. I don’t care what anyone saysI’ve got the best job in the world . Joanne Stephan . #designandopinion #wallsthatteach #dreamjob

15.01.2022 After the busiest year I’ve had, there are lots of contenders for ‘most memorable project’ to share in the usual end-of-year fashion. Instead, I want to tell you about the only deadline I DIDN’T meet this yearmy own. . If you follow any of my personal accounts you’ll know that earlier this month I had a sudden and very unexpected cardiac arrest caused by an abnormal and extremely high heart rhythm (called ventricular tachycardia). The short story is it’s a legitimate miracle... that I’m still alive, albeit with a titanium upgrade care of an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (aka a shocking pacemaker). . While this may seem to have nothing to do with my work, it has everything to do with my life and how I live it. So as far as Design & Opinion goes, from now on I’m going to be more disciplined about the work I take on. I’ll spend less time accepting projects just because they’re there and more time seeking after work that is challenging and exciting. Less time compromising with people who simply don’t ‘get it’ and more time aligning myself with people who are on the same wavelength. Less time writing emails and more time talking to my kids. . I’m very thankful for my many clients who have continued to put their trust in me, dead or alive! Here’s to making the most of 2020 (and the rest of my life). . #designandopinion #notbusinessasusual #pacemakerclub See more

14.01.2022 I usually stay pretty quiet when it comes to publicly voicing opinions about anything other than design, but in this instance I’m making an exception. The current bushfire crisis is affecting everyone either directly or indirectly, and in my opinion its link to a changing climate cannot be ignored. A few other Australian designers have created posters for people to download to take to a climate change rally being held at Sydney Town Hall tomorrow (Friday) at 5.30pm. I’m still not physically up to going to Sydney but if you are, you’re welcome to download and print this poster #linkinbio. And if, like me, you can’t physically get involved you can still donate to any number of organisations across the country, to help the people who are helping people. . #australiaisburning

13.01.2022 It’s fair to say a LOT has happened this year that has deeply affected all of us. and it can be hard to know how to process it all. So psychologist Linda Scott and I are sharing a free, 3-part ‘pandemic survival series’ of mental health advice for business leaders (but it really applies to everyone). This first piece, titled Perspective, focuses on how stress can affect our actions and reactions. It’s never been more relevant than right nowI find myself mentally referring to the ideas in here almost daily. You can read the full article or download a printable A4 version https://www.designandopinion.com/blog. Parts 2 & 3 to come, watch this space.

11.01.2022 NEW WORK: Comfy Koalas eco nappies (2 of 3) When I first had kids I was always going to be a ‘cloth nappy’ parent. I threw that idea out the window at the exact same moment I changed my baby’s first (absolutely disgusting) nappy. Whilst @comfykoalas are still disposable, they only take 2 years to break down, as opposed to 400. And the box makes a great toy so you can also avoid buying all that plastic junk that was bound for landfill (maybe). . #comfykoalas #econappies ...#everypoopcounts . @patchworkcactus See more

11.01.2022 2/3 New work: Dohnt & Co Often, websites try so hard to look sexy that they forget their main function is to make life easier for the people using them. This one is purpose-built for time-poor executives. The responsive site was designed to accommodate different browsing styles, with an ‘executive summary’ view via an intuitive homepage expanding menu, or a more traditional deep-dive via a side menu.

10.01.2022 New work 3/3: Dohnt & Co The stationery was painstakingly and expertly printed by Letterbox Press. Just a few of the eye-watering details: The business cards (second pic) are printed in Pantone black and metallic inks, duplexed with coated paper on one side and uncoated on the other, embossed and spot varnished, and edge-printed in two different colours. By contrast, the document covers are a very simple affairblack foil stamping on specialty cardstock. Was this a designer’s dream and a printer’s nightmare? You be the judge!

10.01.2022 I always thought the first time I’d appear in New Idea magazine would be for my involvement in a royal scandal but turns out it’s for this collaboration with Smitten.inc. . Spot our pieces: 'Katherine' tee in redgum, 'Ginger' pants in pink bottlebrush, 'Polly' dress in green bottlebrush. Featured in New Idea’s Australia Day fashion guide (essential reading, out now!) .... #buyfromthebush #designandopinion #smittenincxkatherinehall

08.01.2022 A brand isn’t just a logo, slogan, product or ad campaign. At the heart of every brand is: people. Here are some of the people that make yousta what it is, at their brand launch day earlier this month. Fun fact: Sam Jooste (first picture) is the company’s founder, and ‘yousta’ is actually the phonetic pronunciation of his surname. Just another little facet of this gem of a brand. See previous posts for more on this project. Chris Perkins . #designandopinion #buildingbrands #smartcollaboration @ yousta

Pictured: linen/cotton ‘Betsy’ tee with Bottlebrush print in navy, linen/cotton ’Ginger’ pants with Bottlebrush print in green, linen/cotton ‘Mary’ wrap skirt with Redgum print in coral. . 05.01.2022 I often find myself having to explain why the work I do costs what it does. So I thought I’d do us all a favour and quickly illustrate how design outcomes work. I call it the Creative Iceberg Effect (alternative naming suggestions welcome). Basically, underpinning every designed outcome and every cool Instagram post is a monumental amount of creative process, sweat and (sometimes) tears. So, next time you hear someone saying, that (insert designed thing here) cost HOW much? tell them it’s not much to pay for a whole iceberg. #publicserviceannouncement #selfimprovementwednesday

04.01.2022 NEW WORK: Comfy Koalas eco nappies (1 of 3) The middle of a global pandemic is generally not the ideal time to launch a business but for the thousands of Aussie parents who now find themselves housebound with young kids, @comfykoalas subscription nappy service couldn’t have come at a better time. If only my kids were still in nappies I would have jumped at this product (but I’m definitely NOT having any more kids!). Visit my IG profile to see some of the fun I got to have creating this branding because I can only put one video on this page at a time . #comfykoalas #econappies #everypoopcounts

02.01.2022 Humans are very good at reflecting on the past and planning for the futurebut this can easily turn into regretting the past and worrying about the future. As part of our ‘pandemic survival series’, Linda Scott and I share some simple ways to train your brain to concentrate on what’s in front of you, right now.
