25.01.2022 After 13 years of a fair bit of guess and check work I now have a talking thickness planer. It is seriously amazing to have this up and going. It took about two... years of research and development, but this colation of technology now means I get to hear what sighted people look at, the measurement read out on a central machine in my workshop - the thickness laner. It is super amazing to have this working and looking forward to sharing with you all videos of my table saw working in a similar way. Seriously, amazing to have this technology up and running... see the full video here.

14.01.2022 Check out the interesting work DOT member Duncan Meerding has been doing around access. Duncan was the 2010 springboard scholorship recipient. He was a studio holder for 7 years. He now has set up his own workshop....
12.01.2022 Listen to Duncan Meerding's Talk at the Powerhouse Museum, as part of the Sydney Design Festival 2019. Hear about Duncan's unique design practise and other things like universal access, and how disability can prepare ones mind for design.
10.01.2022 Reposted from @duncanmeerding Mother’s Day special. Sliding Lid Tea Box has had $10 taken off for clients in Australia.... plus freight included complimentary if in Australia. These are made from salvaged repurposed floor boards. Part of the Not Floored range. Special via the Duncan Meerding website. #teabox #homewares #mothersdaypresent #handmade #designedmade #tasdesigned #tasmaniantimber #tasmanianmade
10.01.2022 A big congratulations to DOT member Scott Van Tuil.
10.01.2022 Excited for today.... starting to teach a pilot course called Woodwork Beyond Sight, the project is a collaboration between @duncanmeerding and @visabilitytas .... This introductory course will focus on box design and making.... the course will be a bit of a taster to adaptive techniques when making with no or low vision... pictured I am displaying a tactile measuring block..... adjusting the height of the blade from below... having courses like this with facilitation by a person with lived experience of disability is especially important for pushing forwards conversations about capabilities of the disabled. For me, I am especially passionate about this, as I have to explain the safety side of things to the sight dominated media. I was quite lucky in the teachers and colleagues I hhad going through university and beyond, with alot of open minds and approaches... but this is not always the case and being able to pass on some tools for blind people to pursue making or design further into the future is an honour. I am looking forward to see what the participants of this course come up with in this course running each Saturday for the next 6 weeks. #woodworking #design #woodworkbeyondsight #blindwoodworking #accessforall. 02.01.2022 It has taken a number of years, but the Cracked Log Wall Sconce will soon be ready for re-launch. WE did a bit of a sneak peak showcase of the prototype in #Mil...an at #euroluce last year. WE are now doing the official Australia launch at the Hobart, Duncan Meerding open studio. Super excited to show topeople coming in physically, but wil also be doing some live events on different socail media platforms showing the studio and the new (and older) products. Dates to be announced next week for the open studio to happen in late July. The new version has an in built LED light source and a custom made bracket. The bracket can allow for the light to be installed indoors pointing with the main opening up or installed with the opening pointing down, creating a dynamic light allowing for different lighting effects through this unique decorative light. Really excited to be able to show this one properly. In fact we are having to build an internal wall in the workshop especially to show you all. #watchthisspace #hobartevents #desinermaker #salvaged #walllight #loglight #wallsconce See more
02.01.2022 Are you a Designer Maker looking for a studio in a collaborative organisation situated in the heart of North Hobart. DOT currently has vacancies for as little as $145 per month.
01.01.2022 Longtime DOT member Paul Allen recently won the prestigious Australian Furniture Association's 2019 Australian Contemporary Emerging Designer award for his Waveform coffee table. In 1994 Paul graduated from utas as a Mechanical engineer. Four months later "my skull was crushed during a white-water rafting trip, leaving me comatose for 3 1/2 weeks. The cost of gaining severe head injuries was the loss of 1/4 kg of brain tissue from mostly the RH frontal lobe.". "While severe... head injury may have finished my engineering career, I was thrilled discovering I could still design and build my own furniture pieces, eventually enough to convince me to formally study furniture making firstly as a Diploma in Wood Design, and eventually to take on a Fine Arts in Furniture Degree once again at the University of Tasmanian. "Being a member of DOT has been invaluable personally. Not only sharing workspace with incredibly talented and welcoming creatives-being able to turn to ask opinions or suggestions-and interact socially has been wonderful. It's a world of incredibly diverse people from disciplines such as ceramics to other furniture designer/makers. It feels a rare privilege to feel part of this designer maker committee." Paul joined DOT around 2007 the same year his autobiography My Life As a Fish was published(avail at on website) You can watch the V2 quicktime version which was made with the assistance of Kickstart Arts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtoIrak1i14&t=7s If you are on in purchasing your own unique and beautiful Paul Allen design, viewings can be booked through http://pallendesigns.info/ @pallendesigns
