23.01.2022 Our South Hobart Homeful is nearing completion. North facing, double glazed windows and doors, clad in Silvertop Ash, and all fitting under 60m2. This Studio // Open Plan Homeful has been built in the front yard of the family home, to allow for intergenerational family land sharing! More shots to come next week. Homeful by Designful Renovative Massimo Combi

23.01.2022 Tools down on #designfulmoonah - thanks to our mates at Renovative for both the build and the pic! A modest, north facing extension has been added to Helen + Ben's loved (and lovely) family home, to give them some extra space as their family grows. A lower level concrete slab adds much needed thermal mass to passively warm the home. The existing kitchen and bathroom remain and will be reused because they are ‘enough’. More pics to come. #enoughness #passivesolar #livemindfully #tassiedesign #timbercladding #solargain #familyhome

18.01.2022 Golden Valley : A Series 1 of 4 : Exterior Materials Kicking off our Golden Valley series with the bits you first see when trundling up the drive - the exterior materials. ... Spotted Gum: we prioritise the use of natural materials with low embodied energy, and we can't go past Spotted Gum (also known as Spotted Ironbark or Lemon-Scented Gum). You would've seen it on many of our projects, and there are many reasons why. As a living carbon store (by weight, harvested timber is approx. 50% stored carbon!), timber has a minimal environmental impact when grown and harvested ethically. Timber cladding brings a warmth and earthiness to a building, and can be oiled to retain the dark brown/red tones, or left to weather to silver. "It's the simplest form of carbon capture and storage; the plants do all the work of pulling CO2 out of the air, and we put them into buildings for a long time." Chris Magwood, Zero House. Zincalume: a steel product coated in a combination of zinc, aluminium and silicon, Zincalume is hardy, highly resistant to corrosion and scratching and is no-to-low maintenance. It's strong, lightweight, non-combustible and resistant in all weather conditions (yes, even this week's downpour/hail/snow!). We also love the look of it - it's simple, humble, affordable and fits the Tassie shack and shed vernacular. More tomorrow, on the site + position! 17.01.2022 House and land prices are a much bigger percentage of our average wage than ever before. So is owning our own home really an achievable dream anymore? Do we want to commit to big debt, meaning we’ll have to work longer hours, for many more years, thus spending our lives at work rather than doing all the other things we’d rather be doing? Is that really what we want? Is that going to make us happy? A potential solution is: buying land or a house with others. (Family..., friends, or other people you have a shared association with.) It’s called Land Sharing, and it’s something we’re pretty keen on. This is already happening in our own communities in various creative forms, and there are many other examples around the world. There are many benefits: sharing the financial load, social connection, a sense of communal achievement, and increased wellbeing (just to name a few). We’re compiling a newsletter, and hope to answer all of your questions around Land Sharing. Let us know in the comments if there’s anything specific you’d like to know! 15.01.2022 Open House Hobart is on this weekend (Nov 14-15), with some of Tassie's most interesting buildings opening their doors for a sticky beak. Check out the Open House Hobart website - there are still some buildings with (free) tickets available, or register for one of the many live virtual tours. (Virtual tours will also be recorded and available on the Open House Hobart YouTube channel at a later date). Tickets have sold out for our little Coal Valley Studio (pictured) - ...if you were lucky enough to nab a ticket, Rose and Kyle will be on site to have a chat and answer any questions you may have! @natalie_mendham #oh_hobart #oh_hobart2020 #smallhome #ancillarydwelling #airbnb #compactkitchen #concreteslab #timber #ply #enoughness #loft See more

15.01.2022 The flow of this modest 3 bedroom family home in Kettering was very important. The brief called for a super functional, high performing and aesthetically pleasing home, zoned into two: private/sleeping, and shared living. Coming in at a compact 140m2, the passive solar design, with a concrete slab floor for thermal mass, prioritises connection from the heart of the home (the kitchen) to living, mud room and a north facing outdoor courtyard. Sight lines to the trees and lan...dscape were carefully considered to make the most of the rural setting. The zero maintenance material palette of carbon neutral brick, Zincalume, Spotted Gum, ply and white was chosen to fit with the coastal/rural surroundings. 15.01.2022 Monday meeting. (Swipe for Jane’s excellent photo face! )

13.01.2022 Just finished construction at Seven Mile Beach. This extension to the family home was designed to capture more sun and create better connection to outside - ready in time for the summer holidays! We’ve used a robust, low palette of materials - most notably Austral bricks (San Selmo Reclaimed in lime wash) and our favourite spotted gum. #designful #brick #spottedgum #timbercladding #familyhome #extension #connectiontooutside

Rose makes us laugh, she brings us cake, and she loves to crank the beats on a Friday arvo. We couldn't imagine this office without you in it Rose - Happy Three Year Designful anniversary! Hang around for a few more, yeah? #fridaydreamteam

11.01.2022 Our beautiful Katie is the physical embodiment of everything that Homeful is. Settle in with a cuppa and pop over to Homeful by Designful for a watch - it's a delight. #homefulrecord

09.01.2022 Golden Valley : A Series 4 of 4 : User-specific design Make your home your own. ... When designing your home, you have the opportunity to create a home that fits you and your needs. Not everyone lives in the same way, and nor should our homes be identical. For a design to function well and satisfy its purpose, it needs to be designed with the end-users in mind. It's important to consider design longevity and adaptability to evolving needs and functions (such as growing families, or shifts in lifestyle, or aging), and it should reflect how you want to live now and into the future. It is our job as designers to clearly understand the functions, feelings and aesthetics your home (or building) needs to support. A good design will ensure that your physical requirements, functional inclusions and financial output are balanced to enable a positive work-life balance, and to support the wellbeing and life experiences of those beneath your roof, to create a sustainable, happy and healthy home life. Sure, you can consider future sale and factor that into your design choices, but when you're going to live in this home, particularly if you intend it to be your forever home - forget about the norm or the standard. Don't need a bath? Don't put one in. Don't want window coverings, because you like to wake up with the sun? Don't install any. And if you like basking in the sun with a book, make sure you include a window seat, or a deck and a beanbag (or both!). 06.01.2022 Beautiful mugs by @lindseywherrett, for one of our wonderful clients!

06.01.2022 Golden Valley : A Series 3 of 4 : 'Enoughness' "Let's speak the idea of enough...Enough is a hard line in the sand, whereas 'more' is like the horizon. Sure you can run towards it, but you are never going to reach it. It's just there, slightly out of reach, but you'll get sweaty and tired trying to reach it! Let's work towards enough instead of more." ... Brad + Bronwyn had already done the hard work in refining their lives before they came to us. They came to us with clear values, a great idea of what was 'enough' for them. They wanted a refined, calm, home, that allowed them to live their ideal lifestyles. The refined interior palette consists of burnished concrete, reclaimed brick, and timber, with plenty of windows to let the sun stream in, and to let those inside feel like they're still sitting amongst the gumtrees. With a footprint of 96m2, this one bedroom home is still spacious and comfortable, easily fitting 9 of us around the table for lunch - with room to spare! Having 'enough' doesn't have to mean sacrificing what's important to you. It's about working out what it is you value, and letting the rest drop away. Make it simple but significant. 02.01.2022 It's Katie's 27th birthday today - look at her circa 1999-ish! Her thinking face hasn’t changed Katie has no idea how wonderfully talented and creative she is, or how important she is to the team - in fact she'll blush and tell you she's not! She's a deep thinker, with a massive heart - we think that's her super power. She's a warm and welcoming soul, and has a wicked sense of humour (if you're lucky enough to catch a glimpse of it.) During her time at Designful, K...atie has grown into a small space specialist - she's a big celebrator of the simple and she has learnt how to ‘not let perfect ruin good’. (Hard for a perfectionist...) Katie is a delight to work with, and we’re all incredibly lucky to have her in our lives - we love her to bits! Happy Birthday Dorney! See more

02.01.2022 Golden Valley : A Series 2 of 4 : Site + Position Continuing our Golden Valley series with the siting and positioning of Brad + Bronwyn's new home. ... Nature is not a place to visit. It is home. Gary Snyder There are a few fundamental design concepts that make for a well-designed building that is 'fit for purpose', the first of which is site-specific design. Site-specific design means that the building is designed in harmony with the natural topography, climate and conditions of the site. To do so you must consider topography, slope, aspect, soil type, existing vegetation, views/orientation, native flora + fauna, existing resources, and local + micro-climate. Designing specifically for the site reduces unnecessary construction costs, makes the most of what the property has to offer, reduces the adverse impact on the environment, and makes use of local materials + resources. Two of the most fundamental things to get right in a site-specific design are the orientation for good solar gain and working with the natural contours of the site, resulting in a building that 'belongs'. These considerations can reduce excessive excavation and cost, and result in a warm, comfortable, home with low running costs. Site-specific design does not add to the overall construction cost of your home, but results in ongoing benefits for both you and your surrounding environment - win win!
