22.01.2022 It’s so much more effective, kids are happier, teachers are happier." Stephanie McConnell, Principal, Lindfield Learning Village. Nearly two years after opening to the first cohort of students, Lindfield Learning Village is successfully demonstrating how a project based learning approach can be adopted into the public education sector. 'They have scrapped age-based classes at primary level in favour of mixing three or four age cohorts together, taught by a team of teachers w...ho group the students according to their learning needs, rather than their age.' Jordan Baker, Sydney Morning Herald. Read the full article below, and more details of the project on our website. DesignInc Sydney and Lacoste + Stevenson, worked closely with the school to design and deliver Stage 1 of Lindfield Learning Village. https://www.smh.com.au//unlearning-what-school-is-why-this #education #lindfieldlearningvillage #projectbasedlearning #pedagogy #educationarchitecture #learning #educationdesign #architecture #interiordesign

22.01.2022 We’re celebrating #loudshirtday this week at @designincsydney, raising money for @shepherdcentre, a charity supporting children & babies with hearing loss. The Shepherd Centre provides interventive support to babies and children with hearing loss, as well as their families. Types of support include consultations with specialist doctors, therapists, speech pathologists, counsellors and educators. Did you know that indigenous children are five times more likely to be diagnose...d with a hearing loss than non-indigenous children? This can have long term impacts on education, social connection, health, employment and quality of life. The @designincsydney Team Platypus will be donning bright and bashful colours in the office tomorrow, and our Team Echidna will be blowing us all away with their glare on Friday. Many thanks to the awesome Patrick Ormsby for organising #loudshirtday in our office. Stay tuned for our best and brightest outfits over the coming days! . . . . . #loudshirtday @shepherdcentre #hearingloss #deaf #fundraiser #officeculture #makingadifference

22.01.2022 Have a safe holiday season from the team at @designincsydney. 2020 was not what we anticipated. There have been ups and downs, surprises, new directions, learnings and teachings. We've forged new patterns of working, living and connecting. We've set up new systems, have worked hard, and have continued to deliver on projects. After over 20 years based in North Sydney, this year @designincsydney moved across the bridge to the Sydney CBD. We are loving our new office in the JP ...Morgan building above Westfield, and are looking forward to hosting events in 2021. We would like to thank you all - our collaborators, clients and our broader community - for support in ways big and small. We couldn't have done it without you. Our office will be closed from Monday 21st December, reopening on Monday 11th January. Best wishes to you all, have a relaxing break, and we'll see you refreshed in 2021. . . . . . . #happyholidays #whatayear #2020 #thankyou #architecture #officerelocation #summer2020

19.01.2022 Housing affordability remains a vexing issue in NSW. The COVID19 pandemic has seen more households unable to service their housing costs, putting a spotlight on the issue. The NSW government is looking at consolidating existing controls into a single ‘Housing Diversity State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP)’, combining a range of residential housing typologies - including boarding houses, seniors living and student housing - into one code. As experts in this field with a... continuing passion to design and delivery high amenity equitable housing in NSW, @designincsydney remains abreast of legislative changes affecting this sector. We are interested in opportunities that the new SEPP may bring. Read the full story on the News section of our website, and register to attend an information session at DesignInc, or learn more about the Housing Diversity SEPP as the legislation is rolled out over the coming months. . . . . . . #housingaffordability #housingdiversity #affordable housing #nswgovernment #legislation #boardinghouse #studenthousing #newgenerationboardinghouse #co-living #build-to-rent #seniorsliving

04.01.2022 Ben Coulston - DesignInc Sydney Senior Urban Designer - is presenting a paper at the upcoming Schools as Community Hubs International Conference 2020, hosted by the @melbourne_uni and held digitally on Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th December 2020. 'Design and procurement of schools currently builds upon minimum standards that often lack generosity to establish social spaces and facilities that can be ‘borrowed’ by external users and provide critical sociological benefits. Thro...ugh a review of planning policy and current state of school development, benefits that shared school infrastructure can provide are discussed alongside the challenging context of delivering these assets within an on-going trend of urbanisation.' 03.01.2022 Here are some lovely moments from our 2020 Christmas party today, held in the glorious Palm House at the @rbgsydney. We greatly missed the people in our team who live on the Northern Beaches, and we're keeping our fingers crossed that the situation eases quickly. . A huge thanks to the people who organised this epic day, particularly Tara Keast and Scott Huston (who unfortunately couldn't make it). . 01.01.2022 Diversity, equity and inclusion are core to how we work at DesignInc Sydney, from the skills of our professional team through to the range of clients with whom we collaborate and the built environments we create. Recognising the need for more Indigenous skills and knowledge in our industry, and in our organisation, earlier in 2020 we connected with @westernsydneyu to fund an Aboriginal Architecture Scholarship. Offering $30,000 per year for five years for an Aboriginal or Tor...res Straight Islander student enrolled in Architecture, the scholarship also includes mentorship and employment opportunities with DesignInc Sydney throughout. The first recipient of the scholarship is starting next year, and we are looking forward to the shared learning opportunities that will arise. We acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands on which we work and pay our respects to Indigenous Elders past, present and emerging. Sovereignty has never been ceded. It always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.
