25.01.2022 Learning to ask for help is an important skill. Once your child is able to ask for assistance when he/she needs it, his/her frustration and the frequently resulting tantrums are more likely to decrease. Have a read of our blog post for ways of how you can promote your child to ask for help. http://www.desilvakc.com/blog/asking-for-help/

23.01.2022 I recently bought this book to read with clients and it has been an absolutely great psycho education resource for families and clients. It is a book that explains and normalises anxiety in a way that is helpful for both adults and primary school aged children can be understood easily. It talks about the physiological symptoms of anxiety and the way it affects both our body and mind. It always gives families and children important coping tools to practice at home to ease anxiety and worry. It can be found on Book Depository and I feel it is a must have as children move through primary school and begin to experience a whole range of emotions. 23.01.2022 Following the government announcement regarding face coverings, all staff and visitors to DSKC (12 years and over) are required to wear an appropriate face covering. During a therapy session only, face coverings may be removed or replaced with a face shield if the face covering is preventing therapy goals. If you are unsure if you require a face covering please feel free to call us before attending the clinic. With thanks from De Silva Kids Clinic.

22.01.2022 Covid-19 outbreaks are keeping parents and children at home and away from others. Everyday routines are changed such as wearing face masks to help stop the spread of the virus. Adjusting to a routine can be stressful for everyone, especially for children who have difficulties with change. Social Stories, such as seeing people wearing a face mask will help your child understand what is happening during Covid-19 and why we are wearing masks to help keep everyone safe. Here you can find this useful resource from Autism Spectrum. https://www.autismspectrum.org.au//People-wearing-masks-So Didem - Speech Pathologist at De Silva Kids Clinic

18.01.2022 In Speech Pathology, we often talk about decoding when it comes to reading. Decoding is when the child understands the relationship between letters and sounds and is able to apply these patterns to reading. This is a great visual that provides your child with decoding strategies to read words. Senali Alahakone Speech Pathologist at De Silva Kids Clinic

Concepts can range from inside/outside, back/front, down/up. Didem Speech Pathologist at De Silva Kids Clinic

17.01.2022 These felt boards are awesome to support language development, prepositions as well as requesting. For example, I want , vocabulary (i.e., farm animals sheep, dog, pig, cow) and prepositions (on, next to, on the bottom, on the top). There are endless ways to use these boards in sessions to continue engagement and attention. Whats better! Each story can be created differently. Didem - Speech Pathologist at De Silva Kids Clinic

16.01.2022 Twinkl has some great free resources available for parents, teachers and professionals since COVID 19 has meant lots of students are learning from home. This emotions board game is really helpful in taking turns with siblings or adults in the home to talk about one situation they felt this emotion. All you need is a dice and two counters to move around the board. It can be a great conversation starter for some of our primary school ages children who may like to explore lots of new emotion words. https://www.twinkl.com.au/ Dominique Dolcetta - Psychologist for De Silva Kids Clinic

14.01.2022 Cutting is tricky! Not only do our kids need to use both their hands doing completely different actions one hand opening and closing and the other manoeuvring whats being cut, but we usually also want them to cut on a line as best they can. AND usually within a loud classroom environment! Have a read of our blog post written by our Occupational Therapist, Alannah for some great tips and tricks to help your child with cutting. http://www.desilvakc.com//ot-tips-for-using-scissors-have/

13.01.2022 Some children need an incentive to talk. Keeping exciting toys in containers can motivate and encourage them to ask for adults to help. Eleanor - Speech Pathologist for De Silva Kids Clinic

13.01.2022 Travel emotion thermometers. These can be useful for children in recognizing and identifying how theyre feeling based on colours and emotion faces. They are great to travel with in the car for children who are both verbal and non-verbal (it is useful to point to). Emotions can be discussed in the car before and after kinder/school and both the child and parent can discuss the emotions theyre feeling and why. It can be a good way to gauge what your child may need before they start or finish their day. Dominique Psychologist for De Silva Kids Clinic

12.01.2022 The Coronavirus (COVI-19) outbreak has been unpredictable and stressful for all of us and as a result we have had to change our everyday routines and adjust accordingly. 10.01.2022 Visual aides can help children with initiation and maintenance of conversation with those around them. This can be a helpful tool to help brainstorm ideas with a child about ways to say hello, ways to invite others into a conversation or to join a game, ways to notice what others may be interested in as well as additional comments that would be helpful to keep the conversation flowing. This is a fun visual to use with children primary school age as these will be necessary social skills to develop as they get older. Dominique - Psychologist at De Silva Kids Clinic

07.01.2022 Angry choice boards can be a useful tool for children to self regulate - they can be placed on the fridge or in their room as a reminder of what they can do to feel calm. It also removes verbal language from adults as it can be overwhelming for a child if theyre spoken to while they feel distressed. This resource is from twinkl - a great teacher and allied health professionals website. Written by Dominique Dolcetta - Psychologist for De Silva Kids Clinic

04.01.2022 Visual daily schedules are an excellent way to provide your child a concrete schedule with structure and predictability during these unpredictable times. Schedules provide visual information about events that are happening in their lives and what they need to do. Prepare the daily schedules with visuals (real objects, photographs, pictures or words) with a finished box to show your child the completed tasks and refer back to the schedule for the next activity Didem Speech Pathologist at De Silva Kids Clinic

01.01.2022 Sequencing cards are used to help children understand the order of events. These skills are essential to help children talk about an event that has happened in the past and to understand how to perform a task that requires steps to be completed in order. Children enjoy putting the cards in order, and then telling a story about what is happening. Starter words (e.g. first, next, then, last) can be used to help children to sequence and provide a story retell. Sumeyya Speech Pathologist at De Silva Kids Clinic.
