23.01.2022 The last couple of weeks have been pretty good. My work has picked back up and Ive been quoting on a heap of new projects with clients I havent worked with before or for a long time. The only problem Im having, is trying to get my costs across the line. I find this the most difficult part of my job - selling-in my value. Its hard. As a freelancer clients see your project cost or your hourly rate and compare it to a full-timer but forget that I dont pocket all of th...at money - I cant go in with "Hey, heres my logo price, it includes concept, design, finished art, tax, super, insurance and the cost of running a business"... What I get out of all of this is that the only way to justify your cost is by consistently producing good work (at a reasonable price). Anyways, thats my rant for the week. 21.01.2022 It has taken me awhile to find my place. I have never been a natural leader and it has always been a challenge when I have had lead teams. I feel more comfortable being part of the team. In footy terms, I like being the support player, always there to help in what ever way I can. Dont get me wrong, I step-up when I need to. 15.01.2022 The only way I get the results I want is by "failing fast". After I get a brief and do my ground work, I sit down with a pen and pad and sketch out as many designs and layouts as I can. Most of them are crap, but I always find a couple that really stand out. Give yourself a time limit and race the clock. This doesnt allow you to doesnt you to dwell on one design. 13.01.2022 Every week I try and cram in as much work as possible. I balance freelance assignments with client work, I dont have time to procrastinate. Unfortunately some jobs have to be done quicker than you were hoping. Its a frustration for all designers. Make sure you have a WIP list and refer back to it regularly. I like to put times next to mine. I worked along side the team at TFE Hotels to create the new logo and supporting in-room collateral. The logo design direction was based on the concept of "Show Your Stripes". Each guest has their own style and personality and The Savoy Hotel On Little Collins wants them to feel that they can be themselves while staying at Savoy... 05.01.2022 As designers we spend a lot of time sitting down staring at a screen. And if youre anything like me you slowly get closer to the screen the longer you sit there (looking like a hunch-back). Research shows that the fitter and healthier you are the better you can concentrate for longer periods. Ive always been active and into sport and fitness, so sitting at a desk for too long does my head in. I try and go for a run or a swim a few times a week.... Try and go for a 15 minute walk at lunch time. Get out of your chair and get some sun. Youll be surprised how much better you feel after.
