14.01.2022 SEVERE WEATHER COMING TONIGHT. (Updates in comments ) If you live in parts of Pilbara district you need to get ready now for the severe weather coming t...onight. Locations which may be affected include Port Hedland, Bidyadanga, Pardoo Roadhouse, Sandfire, Wallal Downs and Whim Creek. Damaging winds may develop as early as Friday morning, but more likely during Friday afternoon or evening. With the uncertainty in the track it is too early to know which specific locations may be affected by the damaging winds. There is potential for this to occur between Bidyadanga and Wickham, including Port Hedland. HEAVY RAINFALL that may lead to FLASH FLOODING is likely to commence well before the low approaches the coast, from Thursday evening and extend inland during Friday. Heavy rainfall is likely to occur over the central and eastern Pilbara Tides will be higher than expected on the eastern side of the track. 14.01.2022 LAKE DISAPPOINTMENT RENAMED A large lake, formerly known as Lake Disappointment - 300km east of Newman, in the Western Desert lands of the Martu people has had ...its name formally changed. Kumpupintil (pronounced Goom-bu-pin-dil) Lake has been formally approved by Landgate, following a request from the traditional owners and the Western Desert Lands Aboriginal Corporation. The lake was named Lake Disappointment in 1896 by explorer Frank Hann who, having followed creeks that flowed inland in the hope of finding a freshwater lake, named it after the disappointment he felt. The lake is important to Martu people for spiritual and ceremonial reasons, as well as being an important place for water and traditional food. The name 'Kumpupintil' describes how the lake was made and is linked to a Martu creation story where Martu warriors fought mighty giants in an epic battle.

07.01.2022 A NOD TO RED DOG AND SOME THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT HIM... With a mind of his own and an unending wanderlust, Red Dog established a reputation throughout t...he north-west of Western Australia in the 1970's. The red Kelpie cross born in Paraburdoo in 1971, was one of a litter of three belonging to Col Cummings, who named him "Tally-Ho" which he shortened to Tally. Red Dog had a natural wanderlust from the outset and an "almost limitless supply of energy". He also held the dubious record in Paraburdoo, of polishing off a large tin of Pal dog food in just under nine seconds! When Tally was 18 months old, Col was transferred to Dampier and within three months, Red broke ties with Col and took off to fend for himself. Eventually he took a liking to the Hamersley Transport Section at Dampier, where he became known as Bluey. Red got to know the operations of the buses and became a firm favourite with all the drivers. He would sit by the side of the road and wait to be picked up. On the buses Red Dog had his own seat - normally the seat behind the driver - and "any unwary traveller would soon discover this fact!" Red developed a particular liking for bus driver John Stazzonelli and would follow him everywhere. The story goes that once John deliberately gave Red the slip, so he could pick up a lady friend and go to the drive-in. But with "a finely tuned sixth sense" Red turned up at the drive-in and wandered up and down the rows of cars until he found John's car. Ending John's chance of romance that night. By now almost everyone knew of Red Dog, including most of the truckies and Red's horizons broadened. Besides Perth it is known that he travelled as far north as Broome and inland to Tom Price and Paraburdoo. Sadly John was killed in a traffic accident. Red left Dampier and began wandering from area to area on his own and became known widely as Red Dog. Eventually he was taken in by Dampier Salt employee, Ron O'Keefe. It wasn't long until Red was made a financial member of the Dampier Salt Sports and Social Club and had a bank account at the Wales opened in his name. Red enjoyed complete freedom and enjoyed chasing birds. "We only know of one that he ever caught." said Ron. "It turned out to be an expensive model aeroplane and its owner was not at all pleased." Ron said he had never known Red to threaten or harm anyone but warned anyone about giving him a lift in their car - "He would make a tremendous asset to the Chemical Warfare Division in any army. He can make a vehicle completely uninhabitable for about three days." Red had many scrapes and "had more lives than a cat" and was shot at least twice. But being the best known and loved dog in the district, there was "no shortage of eager benefactors" ready to rush him to the vet. Vet Rick Fenny got to know Red Dog particularly well. Red came to regard Rick's verandah in Roebourne, as his own territory. On consulting days when Red came to visit the clinic, the situation became impossible, as he would bar any potential dog patients from even coming through the gate. "One poor lady came with quite a healthy dog needing a vaccination, but left clutching a pet which had also needed treatment from Red Dog's bites. Times like these he'd get his marching orders and off he'd go with offended pride... leaving me feeling I had insulted a friend" (Rick Fenny) Red had an uncanny knack of turning up wherever there's an event or gathering of people. He would often be seen at the cricket or footy and fetes. He could find his way back from anywhere, including from as far away as Perth. As he aged, Red Dog "started losing more fights than he won" and tired easily. He also contracted heart worm. Herein, lay a problem with Red as he was never in one place long enough for treatment. So a Ranger volunteered to lock him in the dog pound for six weeks. Red probably "wondered about these new limitations but submitted philosophically and even began to enjoy his role of head pound dog". This was proved when someone broke into the pound to free him. As soon as he was let out, Red went looking for the ranger's yellow ute. Waiting beside it, quite happy to be rearrested! "Red Dog was a legend in a colourful frontier land: a kelpie cross and hitchhiker extraordinaire who enjoyed unlimited travel in cars, buses, trucks and trains." When he died, finished by a poison bait, there was no chance he would be forgotten. Friends Orky Date and Bob Heath got talking over a glass of beer in a Dampier pub, and decided something ought to be done. Orky "set the ball rolling with a $500 donation", and the Red Dog memorial fund got under way. Perth sculptress Meri Forrest re-created the legendary dog for no charge. When the polythene wraps were drawn off the Red Dog in Dampier, "an admiring ripple ran through the crowd, then applause." Do you have a photograph or stories of Red Dog? We would love you to share or even consider donating to the State Library of WA for future generations. Note - This commentary was sourced newspaper articles at the time, using the magic of Trove.
