25.01.2022 Update 17 Aug 2020 - A fun way to work on musicality I hope the week has been good to you. A quick one this week.... If you want to work on your ability to hear when the beat is, then a good way is to make music of your own. And a fun way to make your own music is Jam Studio - http://www.jamstudio.com/Studio/indexStudio.htm. I used this myself when I wanted to improve my ability to hear the beat and keep time. You use a visual interface to make music so you can see it play. You can choose your instruments, tempo and chords. By watching the player move through the bars you designated you can see the change and note what to listen for. You then get a better understanding of music - and that makes you a better dancer. It's also just fun making your own music. Enjoy Clint
17.01.2022 Update 14 Sep 2020 - Another go at reopening Hello I hope the last week was good to you.... This is a short update. As you know, the number of COVID infections is getting lower and there is talk of restrictions easing. However, I am pretty sure that dance studios will be one of the last businesses to reopen. That means we have time to get ready for it. In the lead up, I will send out another survey to see what everyone is interested in. I reckon the last one would be dated. So start thinking now about what you would like from dance upon your return. Regards Clint
13.01.2022 Update 23 Nov 2020: A FAREWELL AND WELCOME BACK hello Destine Dancers, It's an eventful update this one:... 1) Farewell to Scott 2) Welcome back **Farewell to Scott** You might recall that our instructor Scott Everard was studying education. Well he now has work at Caulfield Grammar helping out around the school in different places, particularly around the boarding house doing administrative stuff for the heads of boarding. He will also be doing relief teaching. That means it is time to move on from Destine Dance. He was a great recourse for the studio. He had excellent rapport with students - I am sure his private students will miss him - and he brought great expertise on the swing based dances that highlighted his overall dance knowledge and ability. He did say he will also come in from time to time. So as well as wishing him all the best, we look forward to seeing him around in the future. Check out the photos of Scott (with Marissa) showing his usual disposition when on the dance floor **Welcome Back** And this is the week of our return!I am very keen to see you back on the dance floor and also simply interested to see what things will be like given the past. The next 4 weeks will be a time of reflection on what things are now like (I have little idea what to expect) to establish plans on what to do next year. It is a very interesting time full of potential and I am glad to be sharing it with you. Also, I wanted to remind you of a few things: *We will be wearing masks *I know some have already told me that they are fine with group classes, but if you wish to stay with your partner, then that is fine too. *There will be a lot more hand washing and sanitising so the vibe might be a little different *There will be fewer cases of shared space and we will ask that you leave when your class is done - especially before capoeira (that's an opportunity to separate groups that we will pursue) *There might be times when we reach capacity and we need to say you can't join a group class No matter what, we will be doing our best to give you the best dance experience you can have. See you on the dance floor Clint
11.01.2022 Who would like to see this figure (Standing spin) added to the syllabus routines at Destine Dance?
10.01.2022 Update 31 August 2020 - How to keep your responsiveness Hello Destine Dancers, I hope you had a good fortnight since the last update.... In this update, I want to talk about how you can keep your responsiveness and improvisational skills. When you don't get a chance to dance for a while, you can lose these abilities. Luckily, this is fairly easy to fix with mental rehearsal. Try this around once a day: 1) if you are a follow, then recall the different leads you have experienced. Then imagine what you would do in response. Then try to quickly recall another and another. That will help improve your responsiveness 2) If you are a lead, then think of the figures you know. Imagine performing one and the follow responding. Then think of another one to do and another. This will maintain your ability to improvise. I hope this helps. Shoot me a message if you have any questions or concerns about how your dance ability might have slipped recently. Until next time, I hope things are well for you Clint
09.01.2022 UPDATE 21 Sep 2020 - TECHNIQUE TIME I hope you enjoyed the weekend weather as much as I did. This week I want to talk to you about getting some of your technique back in preparation for the reopening of the studio. We have probably all become a little stiff, so it's smart to get the body moving again.... If you are keen, then I have organised something for you through a tango expert - Tomas Melgarejo. He is the guy that joined us when Destine Dance was on the TV Dance Awards. Tomas is currently running online lessons on Saturdays in tango (and some other dances at other times). These are very much focused on technique - and ideal to help get you back in your dance groove. The price is pretty good - $20 a month. However, as a favour to me, Tomas will let you do the first lesson free if you want to test-drive it first. You can learn more here - www.facebook.com/showydance Or you can contact him directly to talk more about it. Contact: 0431 037 786 Email: [email protected] All the best until next time
09.01.2022 Update 16 Nov 2020 - Let's see 2020 out with some dance You might have seen the earlier post and you might have noted that indoor contact sports are now allowed. Whether you have or not, the point is, we will be teaching classes for the end of November and into December to see 2020 out. Not a bad way to finish the year I reckon.... So starting on the week of the 23rd, we will be running group and private lessons. You can see the details of the group lessons below: Tuesday Street Latin (6:30pm) We focus on two styles from the Street Latin styles Wednesday Latin and Ballroom (7:30pm) We focus on two styles from the Latin and ballroom styles Thursday Swing and Rock & Roll (6:30pm) We focus on Swing, Rock & Roll and Blues styles If you want to pick up your private lessons, then drop your teacher a line or they will contact you. We do not have as much available time for private lessons so get in quick by contacting your teacher if you are interested and you want to secure time. COVIDSafe plan We are only teaching because contact indoor sports are now allowed. Our plan is within this context. We will ask that you: Wear a mask Use hand sanitiser before dancing Register your name upon arrival Arrive just as your lesson starts and leave once it is over You may also opt to dance only with your partner. Please let me know if you have any questions (message or email) and I look forward to seeing you - even if half your face will be covered. Regards Clint
07.01.2022 Update 19 Oct 2020 - what's a contact sport? Vince Lombardi was once quoted as saying: Football isn't a contact sport, it's a collision sport. Dancing is a contact sport.... And as good as the news was yesterday about restrictions being eased, contact sports for adults are still a no-go. So we keep on waiting until Destine Dance can return In the meantime - I hope all is well Clint
07.01.2022 UPDATE 7 SEP 2020 - RELAXING INTO YOUR DANCING Hi Destine Dancers, Do you ever find when you are dancing - and concentrating hard on it - you are worried you will make a mistake? Or it's for a medal - that you get extremely stressed?... Sometimes people will realise that they were holding their breath while dancing. They were that stressed. If you do, then the good news is that you can resolve this the same way you can resolve stress and anxiety in any situation. One technique I have used in the past is visualising. Simply doing my best to imagine the situation so that I can induce the stress. Once the stress is induced, I keep imagining the situation while reminding myself to relax. I might also work on recalling things that I need to remember - the routine for example. As I do this a number of times - you can do this anytime and at many places - I am less stressed. I have found that while this does not remove all stress of the event, it does limit the stress considerably. If you find that this is not enough, then try something more serious. This is a weekly meditation and hypnosis session run online by a childhood friend of mine - https://www.facebook.com/groups/465533241019768 - it's free and you can make suggestions about what each session focuses on. I might even see you at one - I do them when I can. You will learn all sorts of things about controlling your thoughts and feelings. And that can help with more than just dance. All the best until next time Clint
06.01.2022 Testing out the sound systems, the auxiliary sound system, the floor and the new portable mirrors before reopening. Good to see 2020 out on a positive note!
03.01.2022 Update 2 Nov 2020 - SLOW RETURN AND KID DANCE Welcome to November. In this update:... Kid dancing Slow return - dance at home Future plans **Kid dancing** You have possibly seen a video (or one of a number of them) of African kids putting on a dance performance. This is an example here - https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1131728503935085. In this video you see kids dancing with a fairly high degree of skill and experience. However, as you watch this, you might also notice something about the way they move. A certain lightness and sharpness. This is what can be achieved with greater ease when one is smaller. Like how ants are strong for their size. By learning to dance at this age, kids find it easier to achieve certain movements - because of physics. As they grow up, they have the muscle memory of the movement so the muscle strength increases to maintain much of that movement. Thus, kids can keep a lot of this character as they grow. What's the point of this? 1) don't stress if you can't get the ideal movement straight away when learning dance as an adult 2) think about some strength training if you want to increase the quality of your movement **Slow return - dance at home** We still can't have contact sport events for adults. This is the status that we are waiting for before we open up classes again. However, it is now possible to have visitors at home. If you are a couple, have the space at home and you would like to combine one of your daily visits with a dance class, then let me know. We will see if we can align a teacher with your needs. We need to ensure that neither you nor the teacher exceeds their visiting event allowance. **Future plans** As I mentioned above, the plan is to come back once we can have contact sports. Some studios are opening for solo dancing or for demonstration only. However, Destine Dance has always focused on partner dancing and the nature of that experience. That's why we are still waiting. Once that happens, we will be back into it. Until next time Clint
01.01.2022 Update 5 Oct 2020 - you can dance how you wish Hello Destine Dancers Not much new this week so I simply wanted to share a video that I hope you will find motivating.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1ZDPVBFRJY It is a video of Christina Morrison and Stacey Lopez. Very competent and experienced street Latin dancers. In this video, they are doing cha cha, you can tell from the music, but you will see a lot of improvisation and figures you have likely not seen before. I reckon they could be making some of these up as they go. Still, they are dancing with clear leads and follows - and they are well connected. We do teach you a collection of figures so you have a toolbox of figures, but don't ever shy away from trying new things. Think of what we teach you as a foundation for your own development. Looking forward to seeing you when we get back to dance Clint
