Manag...ing type 1 diabetes at school can make things tough for kids, parents and carers, teachers and school staff. We want to make things easier. Today we are excited to announce the official launch of the Diabetes in Schools program. The program is the result of extensive consultation with healthcare and education experts and the diabetes sector. The Diabetes in Schools program will provide support for parents, families, teachers, principals and school staff by equipping them with the tools to support children living with type 1 diabetes at school. People will be able to access a range of tools, resources, online training and information through a new web portal, which is now officially live. 06.01.2022 Great news this morning - we are another step closer to affordable access to CGM and Flash for all people with type 1 diabetes Free Freestyle Libre Flash gluco...se monitoring is now available through the Continuous Glucose Monitoring Initiative. The Australian Government has also removed the high needs criteria that was making it difficult for many people aged over 21 with a concession card to access CGM. Now, if you have a valid concession card, you can access free CGM or Freestyle Libre without having to jump through those hoops. Young people with type 1 diabetes under 21 and women who are pregnant or planning pregnancy can now also access Flash glucose technology. For people who arent eligible and still cant afford the technology, please know we are not done yet. We will continue to fight for affordable access to CGM or Flash for all. Thi...s is because people with diabetes are at a higher risk of serious complications from the flu. But this year, with the threat of COVID-19, having a flu shot is more important than ever. Getting the flu can make people with diabetes more susceptible to other respiratory illnesses like COVID-19. It is also important to reduce the number of people who may get very sick with the flu as this will put a bigger strain on our health system which is already under strain from COVID-19. So contact your GP or other health provider today to get a flu vaccine. The flu vaccine is free for all people with diabetes. Be sure to phone ahead ensure they are registered to provide free vaccines for people with diabetes and to find out about any special arrangements to ensure visits are safe. The vaccine for people aged 65 and over is only available from a GP.

People get worried and buy more to compensate. This can lead to more local shortages and may mean other people are unable to access medicine and products. We need to come together and support each other. There are no shortages. There is enough for everyone. Together we will get through this with common sense and kindness. 01.01.2022 ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY - INSULIN IS A SUCCESS! Insulin was first discovered by Sir Frederick Banting, Charles Best, and JJR Macleod in 1921, and it was purified... by James Collip. On January 11, 1922, a 14 year-old diabetic named Leonard Thompson was the first human who was injected with insulin extracted from an ox pancreas. He suffered a severe allergic reaction due to the compound's impurity, so Dr. Collip worked to better refine it. On January 23, 1922, Leonard Thompson received a second injection of this new insulin, and it was a huge success. Thompson showed signs of improved health and went on to live 13 more years taking doses of insulin, eventually dying of pneumonia at age 27. See more
