17.01.2022 Deutscher and Hackett’s November auction, Twenty Classics of Australian Art + Important Australian and International Fine Art, recorded the highest total for a Melbourne art auction in the past decade and the highest fine art auction total for 2020. With total sales of $13.05m, all but 3 of the 63 lots offered were sold. Following an extended Sydney viewing, the opportunity for a Melbourne viewing was greeted with smiles and enthusiasm from collectors after months of COVID re...strictions. Throughout the evening there were many highlights including several new artist records. D+H passed the $2m mark for the third time in 2020 with Russell Drysdale’s near record $2.945m sale of Going to the Pictures, 1941. 09.01.2022 EXCEPTIONAL RESULT Following an intense bidding war during last week’s auction, Ian Fairweather’s ‘Lads boxing’ smashed its estimates of $200,000 250,000 to sell for $638,181 (inc. BP). A painting that literally and figuratively packs a punch! From a close-up viewpoint, Fairweather captures the scene in muted colours which are contrasted with daubs of blue paint, and occasional glimpses of pencil underdrawing beneath. The energetic application of oil paint and gouache ech...oes the action of the subject, but the focus is clearly the boxers themselves.
