25.01.2022 Last weekend I recorded a fantastic song written by very talented film maker and composer Claire Chatfield. Claire had this to say about her experience at Deva Studio - "Brett Hamlyn is a gentle man and a joy to work with. He is adept at creating the conditions that allow me to find my expression in ways I have not previously been able to in a recording situation. I trusted him and was able to find my voice and my power. The years of experience show in the mix and I look fo...rwards to a long and fruitful collaboration." Claire Chatfield 2017 Thank you Claire. I consider you highly talented and look forward to further collaborations.

23.01.2022 The first song and film clip from Matty Rogers new album produced at Deva Studio over a three day session. David and Eve from Cloudcatccher Media are responsible for the emotive clip.

22.01.2022 Tonight, David and Eve of the renowned Cloudcatcher Media release the mini documentary of Matty Rogers new album, Moving On. The doco was shot during the recording of the album live in the studio. Matty sings and plays at a level where much of the album was tracked in one or two takes. A warm honest album from a gentle man with a huge voice. I can't recommend Cloudcatcher Media highly enough for all video and still production needs.

22.01.2022 Completed the finishing touches to Matty Rogers acoustic album this week, so done and dusted. Eight new songs tracked in three days and mostly one take from Matty on guitar and vocals. Always tricky to track acoustic and vocal simultaneously without phase issues, but utilised a technique with two figure eight mics, and the results are full and warm. Matty Rogers, great working with you my friend!

21.01.2022 Very pleased to announce that Deva Studio clients Matt and Tanya Fisher won the ROCK and Adult Contemporary categories at the 2017 NCEIA Dolphin Music Awards last night, and Matty Rogers won the Male Vocal category. The wonderful Wendy Ford made the top 3 finalists in the Female Vocal category. Congratulations to you all.

20.01.2022 I have been on an immense learning curve over the past two months. Mixing and re-mixing Simon Thomas's album. Wonderful mixing a totally organic album all recorded in your own home, But of course, as you are mixing said album, you are constantly referencing your progress to successful commercial recordings as an end goal. Many of these reference recordings are of course undertaken in mega-studios. Sounds easy right? I assure you, not easy at all. There are some amazing engine...ers out there and some amazing studios, and that is why I love and am totally addicted to this journey. There is no end point and therefore it does not become mundane. Back to the studio right now, but when I finish the album mix, I will definitely write a post on the major 'LIGHTS ON" moments for me during the creation of this album. So many knobs, so little time........

18.01.2022 As many know, I spent around six months lost year working on Simon Thomas's album 'Love Me TInder.' It is a very long journey for any artist to create and of course fund a full studio album and Simon has ticked every box along the way, I just checked out his new web site, and was well impressed. Simon has a way with words that keeps the readers interest, and for me this is not so common, ... Please see for yourselves, http://simonthomasmusic.com/ The Love Me Tinder album features many Northern Rivers notable talents and was a great pleasure to track and mix. No excuses with talent of this calibre, Here are links to two tracks from the album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHGBGPzfPL0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpHitau7Wkw Artwork is completed Simon informs me, expect an album launch in the non too distant future!

18.01.2022 I have been intending to get a showcase of my work together for about the past two years, but got so busy with projects that I did not get down to it. I am really proud of the work coming out of the studio now, and once Simon Thomas's album is mastered and launched, I will get my act together, and let you hear some of the wonderful artists who have entrusted me to capture and present their works. Really I will!!

14.01.2022 Mixing Jason Banister's single 'The Strangest Light' today. Beautiful. For release on Friday. Had a severe case of Mixers Block for a while there. Most unpleasant! Back to mixing Simon Thomas's album and finally making positive progress. Thanks for your patience Simon!

13.01.2022 Southern Cross Uni band contest getting a bit loud! Go for it guys...Brett Hamlyn and Ruth Woodhams judging tonight.

13.01.2022 I have not posted on FB a great deal over the past months. Don't see the point in posting for the sake of posting. I have spent the past six months heavily involved in the Simon Thomas album which features some fantastic Northern Rivers talent. The album is wrapped now and off for mastering soon. Totally organic album and a phenomenal learning curve for me that found me mixing and re-mixing the 12 tracks five or six times each. 60 or 70 mixes. Why? Iv'e just always wanted t...o be good at it. I've always wanted to finish an album and know within myself that it is up there and the best work I am capable of, and with this album I finally feel that. Was it worth it? Yes it was. It feels like completing a many years long journey and finally gazing at the view. Hopefully all of those involved in the making of the album will fell the same way. I have striven to do them all justice. Great songs Simon! Thanks my friend.

12.01.2022 Well it is the wee hours of the morning and I just returned form the 25th anniversary of the NCEIA Dolphin Music Awards. In everyone's lives there are memorable events and tonight was one of those for me. I have had the pleasure of being the president of the awards for three years now, and it was a tremendous honour to take the stage this evening as the president,. In fact it was the last time I will be doing so for the foreseeable future as I am stepping down to pursue my... studio commitments. My sincere thanks again to Layne Beachley, Kirk Pengilly, and my friends Guy Delandro and Peter Northcote for their attendance, it meant a great deal to me and many others. Thanks to the board members, the musicians, the crew and the volunteers who all gave so much to make it an outstanding evening. I had the pleasure this evening of presenting a Presidents' Award for Service to The Music Industry to Ben and Veronica Sneesby, the genius and family behind the world renowned Beesneez microphones. Their daughter Phelicity passed away on February 27th this year aged thirteen and a half after a undergoing 28 operations for a rare genetic heart defect, During all of these years of struggle, Ben and Veronica have still produced a range of the worlds finest microphones. What a pleasure it was to meet and honour their beautiful family. So there it is. Back to the studio for me tomorrow, ot perhaps permission to give myself a rare day off!

11.01.2022 Been a while since I posted on FB for mixed reasons which I wont bother you with. Just finished three days in the studio tracking and mixing the new acoustic MATTY ROGERS album. Lovely guy and one hell of a talent. We are both amazed and happy at how quickly and how well it came together. Couple more days of post production and it is in the can. Had David and Eve from CLOUDCATCHER MEDIA in the studio yesterday filming the first music video for the album, and I can't speak hi...ghly enough of these guys. Great energy, great product from what I saw. Highly recommend their services. Pretty shattered after three huge days, but always deeply satisfying to know you have captured magic. Claire Chatfield in the studio tomorrow with Mark Bromley chipping away at what promises to be a very interesting album as Claire is a rarely individualistic composer whose work really interests me and makes me think outside the square when it comes to the mix, Had some months of since completing the Simon Thomas album as I was close to burn out so it is good to be back at the wheel so to speak,

11.01.2022 I learned one big lesson over the past year when it comes to mixing. It makes no difference whether it is a solely an album with acoustic guitar and vocals as was the case with Matty Rogers album, or a full on production album as was the case with Simon Thomas's material. The lesson is this, Don't reach for the designer plugins, the special effects, anything, until you have taken the mix as far as you can with eq and compression. Both on individual channels / instruments, an...d on you subgroup masters. On the stereo bus, it is always tempting to pace some mastering plugins, and again don't do it. My present practice on the stereo bus when mixing, is to mix into tape emulation, SSL emulation, and often a very small amount of bus compression. Perhaps 1db to 2db of gain reduction as a gentle glue. Taking this approach, you are always focused upon developing your skill-base with the fundamentals of tracking and mixing. Interested in hearing your thoughts and processes. All the best for the season and new year to everyone. Brett

07.01.2022 Very happy to have well and truly funked up App Based Love
