22.01.2022 As a wife, mother, pastor, mother-of-four and chaplain, Sharon Webber is used to multi-tasking. In a frenzied 15 minutes, the Devonport Primary School chaplain helps serve breakfast to dozens of swarming children while also signing a girls plaster cast, commending another girl on her pink hair, consoling a child whose rabbit has died, remarking on a childs smile, anothers scraped forehead, listening to a regulars latest lament about relationship dramas, and chiding two b...oys who have taken an extra container of water. She is well-known and much loved among the pupils despite having only started as school chaplain in March. There is a comfort and ease as children sidle up to her before school at the communal breakfast bar. Sharon spends two days a week encouraging and listening to the parade of students who pass through her office, looking for a place to vent, to chat over a board game, or simply escape in silence to her lounge. Shes also involved in the schools breakfast club on three mornings. She says many pupils are far too anxious; about dying, about fractured families, of parents poor choices, of not having friends, negotiating complex relationships with step-parents and siblings, feeling unwanted and unseen. A few weeks ago, six out of eight kids I saw said they felt like mum or dad didnt really want them around. Its an absolute privilege to be a safe place for these kids, she said. We dont have to have all the answers. The key is just being there and helping them feel safe, loved and valued. Obviously there are definitely some tough days. My job is to listen and to encourage the students, always remembering there are professions above us that we can and do rely on. 22.01.2022 An update from Devonport Chaplaincy around the current Coronavirus (COVID-19). We are very aware that the circumstances surrounding this situation are changing daily. As a Chaplaincy team, we are more than aware of the huge social impact this will have across our community. We are planning to be ready and adaptable to support our most vulnerable however we can. The following are key considerations for our Team;... 1 - As Chaplains, in this crisis, we seek to be agents of hope, not fear; wisdom and discernment in all cases. 2 - Devonport Chaplaincy responses and processes are aligned and consistent with the current Government and Statutory process. 3 - Practice good hygiene and maintain a balanced lifestyle to make every effort to stay healthy. 4 - Be ready and prepared to respond and serve differently. 5 - We communicate regularly as a team as we navigate this national crisis together over the next weeks and months. The direct contacts to discuss any Devonport Chaplaincy policy or process relating to Coronavirus (COVID-19) should be addressed to either Andrew Hillier or Cathrin Boerma.

18.01.2022 We are living in unique times. Every day our team of Chaplains and Mentors connect with people who are desperately searching for "a hope" to get them through these crazy uncertain times. Most are dealing with this as hidden and unseen torment, doing these hard times all alone. The severe impact of disconnection, isolation and loneliness is a reality for many Tasmanians today. Please consider a Tax-Deductible Gift before the 30th of June 2020 and support our team. 15.01.2022 Such a great opportunity

15.01.2022 Disengaged youth are finding confidence, work and a renewed sense of purpose through a unique relationship between the SPACE Learning school, Loaves and Fishes and Devonport Chaplaincy. Students from five North-West high schools are referred to SPACE Learning at Devonport where they are taught in small groups and with one-on-one teacher support. SPACE stands for Staged, Predictable, Adaptable, Connected and Enabled. Devonport Chaplaincy provides individual mentors who assist ...students in class and beyond, and an on-site chaplain supports the students one day a week. The chaplaincy group has been with us from day one of the school, working with teachers and support workers to set up classrooms and workshops for the kids, said Wade Symmons, program leader at the Devonport campus. Three of our students did work experience at the Loaves and Fishes kitchen which led to school-based traineeships. A fourth is doing work experience at the Devonport warehouse which we hope will also lead to a traineeship. Loaves and Fishes also delivers food daily which the kids use in our kitchen to cook meals to take home We have seen some positive impact as a result of the influence of the chaplaincy group. 14.01.2022 We have way too many amazing people waiting for a caring friend LIKE YOU. Yes, you! We desperately need student and driver mentors who are willing to invest an hour or two a week into the lives of those who need a little extra care or who don't have access to a car or cannot afford to pay for driving lessons. Mentors of all ages are welcome. Mentors need to care, be willing to listen, and be willing to encourage and share their life with another. Meet one of our driver mentors, Anne. https://devonportchaplaincy.org.au/annes-patient-hand-at-t/ Our next mentor training is on Friday, November 20, from 9am-3pm at the Devonport Chaplaincy office, 130 William Street. 12.01.2022 Reece High School principal, Grant Armistead (pictured), is arguably the biggest fan and strongest advocate of school chaplaincy and one-on-one student mentoring. I have weekly conversations with parents, teachers and students saying how much they value having a chaplain at our school, he said. In fact, I would say that one-to-one adult mentoring has had the most significant positive influence on individual student wellbeing. Having a significant adult within the school th...at cares for them has a profound effect on their confidence and self-worth." Grant says the power of mentoring is the longevity of the relationship - the level of trust and respect built over time. He said some students had the same mentor for several years, meeting for 90 minutes each week. Grant, who is a former Reece High School student, and who has been teaching for 22 years, has seen the value of chaplains and mentors at three different schools. He said chaplains added a unique and extra dimension to student welfare. Chaplains are like the school’s triage service, assessing needs and referring students to appropriate services such as the school nurse, social worker or psychologist if necessary. They are not there as counsellors. They are expert listeners, encouragers and our 'good cops' of the school.'' Devonport Chaplaincy also supports schools in Latrobe, Port Sorell, Sheffield and Devonport through breakfast clubs, learner driver mentoring and training. More volunteers are needed. Follow the link to become a significant positive influence in the life of a young person. https://devonportchaplaincy.org.au/can-i-help/ Reece High School Devonport Churches #devonport #chaplaincy #mentoring #studentmentoring #education #youth #tasmania #schoolchaplaincy #schoolmentoring

11.01.2022 Anne Wagner has been driving since she was 13 and has taught more than 20 people to drive over more than six decades. Anne, 78, has been a driver mentor with Devonport Chaplaincy since 2014 and has the triple honour of being the most senior mentor, the equal longest serving, and the most successful. None of her students have failed to get their licence under her patient instruction.... I learned to drive on the farm at Stowport when I was 13, she said. My twin brother was big enough to bale hay, so I helped out by driving the truck. It probably didn’t get out of first gear, but I had to steer and stop and start. The former art teacher at Leighland Christian School and WEC missionary in The Netherlands has helped teach her two children and five grandchildren to drive, as well as many friends and referrals through the Devonport Easy Ps driver mentoring program. I love being able to teach someone a new skill, she said. I love to see people get freedom, self-confidence and employment, all because they got their licence. I’ve mainly taught people who don’t have anyone to teach them or don’t have a vehicle to drive." Many of her students have been single mums, including her current student, Nicole Harding, (pictured) from Latrobe, who wants to get her licence to get a job in hospitality. Nicole has clocked up about 30 of the required 50 hours before she can take her licence test. Both Anne and Nicole agree that the informal discussion about life, work and family while out on the road are as important as the driving skills. I have one previous student with whom I have a strong relationship who still rings me as she doesn’t have much family support. Visit www.devonportchaplaincy.org.au to join Anne and many others as a driver mentor. 10.01.2022 The most recent Mission Australia survey (2019) of more than 25,000 youth shows the enormous stress our children and youth are under. In Tasmania, a troubling 61.6% of girls were worried or extremely worried about stress, three times the rate of boys. Chaplaincy, mentoring, breakfast clubs, driver training and traineeships are some of the ways we are standing with Tasmanias children and youth. @devonportchurches @mission_aust #devonport chaplaincy #devonport#loavesandfishes #tasyouth #chaplaincy

09.01.2022 Every day, of every week I see an incredible team of people who sacrificially give of themselves. Im constantly in awe of the Devonport Chaplaincy team who every week go way above and beyond what is asked of them. Most of their work and the investment they make into the lives of those doing it tough is never seen. Our Chaplains prefer it that way. They just want to serve in any way they can. I know their community contribution is appreciated and hugely valued by many. Than...k you Chaplains for all that you give!! Yes they get paid. But certainly not to the level of heart and sacrifice they give. All of them give many hours voluntarily far above. For this we say a big sincere heartfelt thankyou!!! We appreciate each and every one of you very much. Help us raise vaulable funds that will support our Chaplaincy team as they tirelessly go about supporting many doing it tough across our community. Any gift you give over $2.00 is Tax deductible. Andrew Hillier, Devonport Chaplaincy

02.01.2022 Over this past week more than 100 amazing people from our community have tirelessly volunteered supporting struggling kids, youth and families. We appreciate every person who volunteers across our community. Yes... it is National Volunteers Week #NVW2019 so we acknowledge you as a part of this very special week.... but these incredible people give of themselves every single week of the year without any fanfare... which is just the way most of them prefer it. However, we say a big big, THANK YOU to all who continually give so much as Mentors & Volunteers. #wearebettertogether #Devonport Churches #NVW2019

01.01.2022 I try to be the mentor I wish I had growing up. It has been my great privilege to be a mentor to many teenagers and adults. It’s a position of trust where I get to help mentorees articulate their feelings, ask questions, share their fears, failures, triumphs, plans and dreams. Together we identify areas for improvement, reflect on disappointments and failures, laugh and cry, set goals, make plans, plot a path, smash down obstacles and overcome, little-by-little.
