23.01.2022 Recently we held a Golf Croquet Hi/Lo doubles competition. This event enables our least experienced players to team up with experienced players and learn the tricks and cunning of competition play. The constant rain in the days prior rendered one court unplayable, so the game times were reduced to accommodate the event. Sixteen players competed in two blocks. At the completion of the block rounds there was a series of finals. Robin O’Reilly and Stevie Chambers finished top of Block 1, and Glenys Lee-Archer and Lyn Chambers top of Block 2. In a very close final, Glenys and Lyn came out winners, 5 hoops to 4. Well done everyone!

23.01.2022 Congratulations to Alan Maher, winner of the Gold Spoon, to be eligible to enter this event you must have previously won a Monthly Medal.

20.01.2022 Our club had a team in both the Open Mixed and the C grade in the recently completed Northern GC pennant. The Open team Heather Myers, Jim Cox, Glenys Lee-Archer, Robin O’Reilly, and John Lee-Archer left it until the last match of the pennant to finally score a win. And what a win it was with Jim winning the final game to give us the match in a nail-biter! Well done to everyone who participated in the Croquet Pennant!

13.01.2022 GOLF LADIES CAUSE HAVOC Recently fourteen Past Golf Lady Presidents caused havoc at a local restaurant at their annual get-together for lunch. Ages ranged from 60-92. As we know, ladies in groups aren't always quiet and unfortunately, their loud chit chat wasn't appreciated by everyone at the restaurant! The ladies had not long finished their meal when suddenly their conversation was interrupted by a patron who wasn't happy with their loud banter! Not only did the ladies go q...uiet, but you could have heard a pin drop in the entire restaurant. Thanks to the experienced owner-manager the problem was sorted quickly. The ladies were then asked to continue their conversation and enjoy themselves. After the initial shock, fourteen ladies sat with tears running down their faces. NO, they were not crying.they were laughing It’s the first time for a long time they felt like little schoolgirls. The ladies could not have paid for better entertainment and all went home with a smile on their face, looking forward to next year’s get-together.

11.01.2022 While we’d all like to hit the ball like the pros the reality is that the average club golfer is a different beast. To figure out which golf club you should use for a particular shot, you need to know the average distance you hit a ball with each golf club in your set. The best way to find out is to hit about 50 balls with each club. Eliminate the longest five and the shortest five, and then figure out the middle of the remaining group. That’s your average distance. Why not grab a bucket of balls from the Sports Shop and go out and give it a go. Knowing how far you hit each club will go a long way to helping take strokes off your round.

08.01.2022 Here is a funny story for everyone!! On Saturday 20th September, our two gardening ladies Jane Donohue and Cheryl Roughley decided between them the new garden on the 13th needed watering. One was to turn on the watering system and one was to turn it off. BUT Jane with the three others in her playing group arrived during their game to find the hose had blown and we had a waterspout meters high going everywhere. Other members had rung for help........ BUT 86 year old Jane got o...nto her knees and tried to turn it off. Ann Knuckey felt sorry for Jane and took an umbrella to shield her, but the force of the water blew it inside out!! Gerry and Pam just stood back with smiles on their faces! Jane did eventually succeed and managed to turn the water off. 9 out of 10 for Jane who finished the nine holes dripping wet and smelling as the water was from the dam!! She then retired and went home to shower. Cheryl and Jane are still ‘discussing’ whose fault it was. I think you will agree they do a great job with our gardens.

06.01.2022 Spring is finally here and the bowls greens, croquet lawns and the golf course are all looking fantastic. The recent rains have been good which has complemented the fertilising program undertaken by our course staff. Construction of the new chipping green is well underway. The club is back to nearly normal operating conditions we still have to observe the COVID distancing rules, staying home if feeling slightly unwell and sitting in the club house whilst enjoying a drink. We are all aware of these rules and generally members have been very co-operative in their application, however we need to maintain our vigilance and comply with these rules.

06.01.2022 GOLF RULES FROM PETER WEBSTER I was asked recently about a situation where a ball, sitting on some grass on the lip of a bunker, was accidentally struck while the player was positioning themselves for the shot. The questioner wondered if they would call it a stroke and continue from where the ball came to rest after the accidental strike. This is not the case.... The ball must be replaced on its original spot and a 1 stroke penalty would be applied. (See Rule 9.4). Do you have a mate who's questioning this rule, tag them below to let them know!
