25.01.2022 Last meeting we had Greg Close from the Leven Scuba Club came to talk to us. Equipped with a projector he told us about the history of the club, and in particular wanted to tell us about what was in our Devonport waters, namely the artificial reefs put in place by their club in the late 1990s. The club was founded in 1978, currently has about 30 members, and meets on the 1st Thursday of each month at The Mersey Yacht Club. Twenty-five years ago the club negotiated for a boat ...Continue reading

24.01.2022 Most service clubs these days have trouble attracting younger people. We are no exception. If you are interested in joining us one evening we would love to see you, young and old, working, studying, retired, male or female, no matter where you are from... if you like us help to build the town in which we live, and put it in your heart to give,... and serve mankind :) https://lionsclubs.org.au/join-lions/

24.01.2022 Christmas cakes and puddings have arrived and many have already been distributed to our regular outlets! Thank you to those Lions involved in this magnificent task, a task that kicked Christmas off before the seasonal jingles even hit the stores! Not sure if that is worthy bragging about :)

23.01.2022 The City of Devonport Lions club was very happy to have Denise and Tammy from the Munnew Dementia Day Centre come and talk to us about their new initiative. Today they came to talk to us about their new Reflections Cafe, the new home away from home for people affected by dementia, providing a specifically non-clinical and friendly social setting. With DCC support and a $3K City of Devonport Lions Club donation the Cafe is going to open at the Devonport Senior Citizens Club... every second Wednesday of the month from 10am till noon. Every week 1800 people in Australia are diagnosed with a form of dementia, there are about 100 different types with Alzheimers being the most common one. Contrary to public perception, not all dementia has to do with memory, there are other ways in which it can affect patients, depending on where the damage is in the brain. It is important that public places have dementia-friendly facilities, which may include toilet latches and toilet paper dispensers to name a couple and for this to be recognised we need increased community awareness which the Cafe will provide. Reflections Cafe will be dementia friendly and be available to anybody affected by dementia in their lives whether it be parents, grandchildren, grandparents, friends or carers. The cafe will give people in our community a chance to socialise with other people in similar situations and avoid feeling isolated alone at home. The cafe will also help locate community services and support where needed and be there to do what they can to help people with dementia-related issues including social activities. Food for the cafe has been donated by various community organisations such as Drysdale and Don College, who will take turns sponsoring the cafe with coffee and tea and light snacks amongst other things. Munnew is a community-focused group operating under the Meercroft Umbrella and services Devonport and surrounds, and is aimed at supporting family and carers and anybody living with Dementia old or young.

23.01.2022 Still time to come and support the City of Devonport Lions Club!

22.01.2022 City of Devonport Lions Club are cooking a BBQ at Providore Place next Wednesday (16 October) for Seniors week !

21.01.2022 City of Devonport Lion's Club President Jenny Rimmer had the honour to attend a Civic Reception at the Paranaple Centre last night to meet the Governor General of Australia - His Excellence - David Hurley and his wife Linda. Earlier in the day the entourage visited the Teddy Sheean Memorial at Latrobe. His Excellence spoke on the difficult year and thanked local volunteer groups. ... Linda Hurley has a beautiful voice and encouraged us to sing "You Are My Sunshine," which created lots of laughter. The visitors commented on the magnificent view from the building .

21.01.2022 Our City of Devonport Lions Club was privileged to have Deputy Mayor Cr Alison Jarman talk at last months meeting. She entertained us with a lighthearted bio of her interesting life and talked about the incredible BrightStar Dancers whom she proudly and successfully choreographs for the North West. BrightStars is part of Down Syndrome Tasmania and organises dance and mime events performed by young Down Syndrome affected people with their mentors. BrightStars now has troupes ...in the North, North-West and South of Tasmania.. BrightStar dancers and volunteers regularly practice and perform publicly, with an ever-increasing demand for performances. Alison also mentioned the joy she spreads by taking her pony Stella Bella to visit aged care facilities. Pony visits have been an overwhelming success. Here Stella Bella is pictured visiting Eliza Purton and Meercroft Aged Care facility.

20.01.2022 We were honoured to have our mayor Annette Rockliff speak at our last meeting. She gave us an overview of how Devonport was going, which was resoundingly positive despite the huge Covid-19 wave across Australia. The Mayor reported the Devonport Library move to the new Paranaple Centre was exceeded expectations, breaking all previous visitor and program participation records. With the Paranaple Centre now completed and room hire in the centre higher than last year (despite C...ovid restrictions!) and Service Tas now able to help with most council matters as well at the same counter, we are now focussing on the $3M Townhall upgrade, which includes our tourist centre and the art gallery. As for Providore Place, real estate agents are working on commercial occupancy of the available space, and twilight markets are planned for December to kick off regular markets in the new year. The Fragrance Group of hotels, who also own the Ibis Style hotel in Hobart, are hoping to have the new waterfront hotel completed in the next 12 months and operating by March 2022. Also due for completion at the end of next year is the $17M waterfront precinct which includes a Sounds and Light show designed by Mandy Lights from Sydney, an internationally renowned lighting and visual design company who has done remarkable shows and events, including Parrtjima, the world’s largest light festival celebrating Australian Aboriginal art in Alice Spring. Check out the videos on https://www.livingcitydevonport.com.au! Annette was also proud to mention how TasWater has occupied our call centre space in King Street, which has attracted a lot of permanent employment for Devonport. Another item our Mayor was happy about was starting the EOI (Expressions Of Interest) process for commercial project proposals for some public places such as the Edward Street Carpark, the lawn across from the old library space, the carpark in Steele street near the old Webster building, and the top of Payne Ave carpark. This is done after receiving 'encouragement' from state and federal governments to promote more capital investments.

19.01.2022 The City of Devonport Lions Club had a recent dinner meeting at the 'Zest Cafe and Bakehouse' run by Peter Langford and his young family. Peter enthusiastically took over the cafe, formerly known as the Wagyu Pie Company 4 years ago. Peter, his wife and young daughter worked hard to make the business a success and despite several setbacks along the way, including Covid-19, are surviving in the hard hit catering industry. The biggest problem right now is having to turn away customers because of social distancing requirements which limits seating capacity to only a third of what it could be. We really enjoyed our meal here and wish Peter and family all the best!

18.01.2022 City of Devonport Lions Club was out in the Rooke Street Mall for Daffodil Day, collecting money for the Cancer Council. Daffodil Day is one of the Cancer Councils much-loved annual campaigns, which raises life-saving funds for world-class cancer research . Over 3,000 Tasmanians are diagnosed with cancer every year selling fresh daffodils, daffodil pins and an assortment of home made merchandise. Last year Tasmania raised $56,000.

And also presented, in absentia, was the 25 Years of Service Tab to Lion Kevin Wills! Kevin is doing well with the help of his family but not able to attend all our meetings. 14.01.2022 City of Devonport Lions welcomes Justin Buckley to our Club! At the same meeting, we also handed out cheques to various worthy organisations, see pics below :)

13.01.2022 City of Devonport Lions Club could no longer meet at our regular Gateway Hotel as it has been made an official quarantine hotel and stopped serving the public. So we have been meeting at the new Prem's Seafood restaurant. So far so good and we have had two successful meetings there and are attracting new potential members. If you have ever thought of doing something constructive for the community that we live in why not consider joining us!

13.01.2022 The City of Devonport Lions Club will be supporting Seniors Week 2019 at Providore Place on Wednesday 16 October. Be there :)

13.01.2022 The City of Devonport Lions Club is proud to announce our 2019 Citizen of the Year is Tammy Bronfield. The award was presented at our last meeting at the Gateway Hotel in Devonport. Tammy was born and raised in the Huon Valley and started her professional life in the 1970s as a hospital aid at the Huon District Hospital south of Hobart before starting a nursing qualification at the St Johns Park Hospital in Hobart. After she got married in 1983 she moved to the NorthWest and... worked at Devonhouse (now called Strathdevon) in Latrobe before starting a career in the field of Dementia at Eliza Purton in Ulverstone. Eventually, she ended up at Meercroft working in the secure dementia unit before settling into her current career at Munnew, a community day respite centre which caters for people diagnosed with dementia and their carers. Over those last 11 years she perfected the craft of caring for dementia suffers. Now as a team leader at Munnew she has travelled to many conferences and workshops, learning from the latest research and with the help of her colleagues instigated many activities for their clientele. These activities included starting a music program with a music therapist, bringing together carers and their children to enjoy music, songs, dance and other musical activities which are enjoyed by all. Munnew clients now also take part in community events such as the mural fest, the tulip festival and the steamfest, visits to the art gallery and many more. Other activities often involve healthy outdoor pursuits such as picnics, dining out, sightseeing, fishing and even cycling on the trishaw bikes along victoria parade! November last year Munnew was transformed by Tammy and her team into a fine dining restaurant, so the clients who rarely dine out could enjoy fine dining at Munnew. A Facebook page has been set up to advertise the upcoming activities; https://www.facebook.com/munnewdaycentre

13.01.2022 We had a very interesting guest speaker this week talk about holiday home swapping at our meeting. He prefers to remain anonymous. http://www.homelink.org hooks up like-minded people to swap homes around the globe. Like-minded people commonly swap cars, bicycles and homes to experience life and immerse in communities in different worlds and cultures. Typically neighbours or cousins hand over the keys to the properties and act as emergency contacts, but nothing bad has ever ...happened to our guest speaker in the many years he has been swapping. Sometimes he and his partner link up several swaps for one trip and they might stay in a hotel for a few days in between, but typically he returns home and finds he has spent little or no more than he would have had he stayed at home. The usual arrangement is that people have a visitors book/manual which explains the white goods, TV remotes, driving advice, tourist hints and tips for the area and sometimes a welcome basket and a fridge filled with local with goodies. Before leaving people always make sure the properties are locked up and returned to the same pristine condition of course as the swappers can review their experiences. Insurance companies love the fact he does it and not leave home and car unattended while on holidays. Sometimes they go visiting family on the mainland and allow swappers to look after their house. For pet owners swapping may include looking after a dog or cat, but that is always spelled out in the home swap details. #TheGreatPause we are experiencing with Covid has not stopped people from using the site, with our guest-speaker swapping with other Tasmanians, but of course looking forward to other Australian swaps when the borders open up again. It was a great presentation and inspired us all to travel again and investigate #homeswap opportunities.

13.01.2022 Walter van Praag OAM was the guest speaker at our last meeting. He showed us the documentary Lowest to Highest, a documentary about 5 people with major disabilities (including Walter who has Cystic Fibrosis) cycling from Lake Eyre to Mount Kosciusko - (see it online here https://vimeo.com/ondemand/lowesttohighest) and spoke about the inspiring ride. Walters next documentary will be about the fight against antibiotic-resistant infections, something people with Cystic Fibros...is are no stranger to. Walter himself has been given so many IV courses that they no longer help his persistent lung infection, but still have serious side-effects such as kidney damage, hearing loss, tinnitus etc. Walter has done his homework and believes Bacteriophages, phages for short, will offer solutions for the worlds antibiotic problem. He is not alone in thinking this, the CSIRO and organisations and universities in the world back his view. Because phages cannot be classified as a medicine and are not patentable they do not fit the Western clinical trial model nor will benefit the pharmaceutical industry. As a result, the Western World knows little about phage therapy. Walter is travelling to Europe next month to investigate phages and hopefully be his own guinea pig and receive phage therapy for his current Pseudomonas Aeruginosa infection. The City of Devonport Lions Club wish him all the best. www.gofundme.com/f/phage-or-fail-with-antibiotics

09.01.2022 City of Devonport Lions Club had its first informal lunch meeting since covid19 today. We had two tables full which was almost unexpected as we understand many of us are still very cautious about the current situation.

09.01.2022 Happy New Year from the City of Devonport Lions Club!!! Oh, and in case you feel the need to become a little more active in the community, why not considering becoming a Lion! Never too old, but we would love some younger members too, so dont be intimidated by our grey hairs.

08.01.2022 The City of Devonport Lions Club meets at the Gateway Hotel twice a month. We enjoy a basic meal as part of our meeting. We start 630pm and try to have it all wrapped up two hours later. 08.01.2022 Carols by Candlelight went off without a hitch. Even the pending rain managed to stay away :) Great just b everyone. The countdown to Christmas is going fast!

07.01.2022 Lion Walter, clearly not one of our most photogenic members, was born in Holland in 1965, migrated to Canberra in 1978 taking his family with him. He was educated in Maths and Philosophy at the renowned Australian National University as he drove taxis and trucks and worked in kitchens over a ten year period. Despite living with a debilitating genetic condition, Cystic Fibrosis, he has always been an adrenalin junky and travelled the world on a shoestring budget. He has lived ...and worked in the USA, PNG and various places in Australia but the last 15+ years in Devonport. Once married without kids, now happily dating fellow Lions Ree. His passion is to do inspirational travel for CF and raise much-needed funding for the cause. His adventures included the El Camino in Spain, cycling from Paris to Istanbul, across the Nullarbor, from Vietnam to Singapore, hiked the Bibbulmun and more. Currently, he is raising awareness of Bacteriophages, the solution to our antibiotic-resistant infections, and you can donate at www.gofundme.com/phage-or-fail-with-antibiotics. He enjoys walking his dog Lily, getting into trouble, likes entering countries without visas and climbing into jails, living in Greek caves, and living with Eskimos just to name a few examples.

05.01.2022 Youth of the Year night at our City of Devonport Lions Club was held last Thursday! We had four quality contestants, William and Riley from Don College and Isaac and Shakira from St Brendan Shaw. Tonight they were here for their public speaking component of the competition. First, they had to reply to random questions; 1) What is going on in England and 2) What makes you happy. Next was their prepared speeches on their own chosen topics. Shakira talked about the demise of v...olunteer numbers in important organisations such as Volunteer Fire Fighters, Red Cross, SES etc. Her point was that we are all too busy to have regular commitments, and this was a real shame as our society absolutely relies on volunteers, quoting the Tasmanian Fire Service as having only about 250 career firefighters and almost 5000 volunteers, without whom they could not operate. Isaac decided to talk about Right and Wrong, and covered philosophers such as Socrates, human thoughts through the centuries and in the end decided that Right and Wrong are just as relative as Right and Left, it depends on which way you face! To make life easier Right and Wrong is a line clearly drawn in the sand for communities like say Australians, and we call that The Law, which defines Right from Wring so there is no confusion about it for any of us! Riley had a most moving speech close to her heart about Family Violence. She grew up in a violent home and always thought it was normal. Fortunately, she had options and was able to escape over time when she realised. As is common with children growing up in unhealthy environs she went through phases of self-harm, running away, and blaming herself. Riley had to make decisions on blocking her parents on her phone and other hard decisions. She says she was lucky, others in her situation have no options like she says she did. One child is killed every fortnight in family violence, and last year almost 400k cases of child abuse were documented in Australia. Family violence happens behind closed doors and needs to come out of the shadows. She encouraged kids to speak up; you have a voice, use it! Riley won the event and is progressing to the regional level in the next few weeks! We hope she does well and hope she gets to the national level. We wish her lots of luck. Watch this space!

05.01.2022 Lion Philip on 7AD explains how lack of venue (construction at Roundhouse park in 2019-20) and low Lionsclub membership necessitates next years Taste the Harvest to be postponed.

01.01.2022 Today we were privileged to have district governor Byron Dilworth talk to us at the Gateway Hotel. Kindly introduced by Vere Cooper, our zone Chairman and member of our neighbouring Dev.Mersey Club. DG Byron reminded us of the current Lion slogan United in Kindness and Diversity. He advised us of the MD201 District Convention 7-8 November was now to be held at the Tramshed in Launceston (incidentally partially funded by the Lions 25 years ago!). This venue is better able t...o cope with the new COVID-19 regulations. The convention dinner cost has now been reduced by 50%. On another note, DG Byron reminded us that us Lions value fellowship and that during this period of social distancing where many face to face meetings were cancelled fellowship was more important than ever and encouraged the club to arrange responsible social events for us to get together. Club President Jenny also noted that the responses to our recent in-house survey also indicated our members wanted more regular social events for our club.
