15.01.2022 Surf Life Saving volunteers from across the North West had their skills and training put to the test this afternoon when they responded to a simulated aviation ...incident near Wrights Island, just north of Devonport Airport. Emergency Response Team (ERT) members from Port Sorell Surf Life Saving Club, Devonport Surf Life Saving Club and Ulverstone Surf Life Saving Club were scrambled by the Surf Life Saving Tasmania Duty Officer to respond to reports of a light aircraft which had crashed in waters offshore. Strong wind and choppy seas presented challenging search conditions for the Inflatable Rescue Boat crews as they searched for casualties in the water and on the nearby islands. ERT members responded from their homes to their respective surf clubs to collect boats and equipment, before heading to Moreland Beach. The exercise was deliberately staged between Devonport and Port Sorell surf clubs to test the response times and the operational response to the incident. Despite the distances involved, the first IRBs were on scene a little over 30 minutes from the first notification and located all casualties from a search area of almost 4 square kilometres within 45 minutes. As part of a culture of continuous improvement, lessons learned from the exercise will be used to review and refine our Standard Operating Procedures for the coming surf patrol season. Emergency Response Team members are on-call 24/7 to respond to incidents on our waterways, and to support emergency responses across Tasmania. #rescueready365 #practicemakesperfect #emergencyvolunteers #emergencyresponseteam #surfrescue.

From radio communication equipment, drone surveillanc...e, rescue water craft and even the warm clothing worn every day by our teams, none of this could have been possible without funding. Thank you to the following organisations, Tasmanian Community Fund, Westpac and the National Disaster Resilience Fund for your ongoing support of Surf Life Saving Tasmania. 09.01.2022 Good evening all, Todays emailed advice from SLST was clear and concise in our expected response to COVID-19. We will be shutting down the club for the foreseeable future over the weekend. All personal equipment will need to be removed during this time. This includes boards and skis that people may wish to use at any point over the coming months. I will be at the club from 9am-12pm on Sunday tidying up and preparing for closure. Club members will be able to collect their pe...rsonal equipment during this time and return their keys / fobs where possible. At 12pm the entire DSLSC complex will be alarmed with a new access code which will, for now, be available to our Emergency Response Team only. This will include the downstairs sheds. Whilst extreme, it is imperative that we keep our emergency response equipment clean and ready for use and to ensure there are no general comings & goings from the building during this time. As always, should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via direct message, email or phone (0418126068). Should you be experiencing any flu like symptoms at this time, please remain at home and alternative arrangements can be made at a later date. Your support and cooperation is greatly appreciated. Take care of yourselves and loved ones. I look forward to seeing you on the beach again as soon as possible. Heather Parker DSLSC - President

04.01.2022 As part of marking 40 years of women in lifesaving, 2020 saw the launch of Surf Life Saving Australia’s Women’s Mentoring Program. The program has paired 20 fem...ale mentors with 20 female mentees from across the country. They are working together for a 12 month period, focussing on empowerment, support and leadership skills. The aim is that participants can then apply new skills to both their professional and everyday lives - both within and outside of surf lifesaving. Of the 40 women participating in the inaugural program, Tasmania is being represented by Amanda Mackinnon (Carlton Park) and Lynette Barratt (Devonport) who are program mentors, and Amber Loone (Devonport), Emily Price (Burnie) and Lara Emmett (Ulverstone) who are current mentees. Lately we’ve been catching up with each of the Tasmanian women involved and will be sharing their experiences in the program over the coming week. Perhaps they will inspire you to apply for a position in the 2021 program? Expressions of interest are now being called for, with applications due by December 14 for the second cohort commencing 1 February 2021.
