23.01.2022 Fact: NSW had a social housing shortfall of 135,000 properties before COVID-19 and last summer’s bushfires. Fact: A 10% unemployment rate is projected to increase homelessness in NSW to between 7,905 and 16,140 people. Increased homelessness is estimated to cost between $218 million and $445 million each year due to higher health and social service costs. These numbers are too high. When the bushfires ravaged our country last summer, hundreds of thousands of people were left ...without a home. When COVID-19 hit Australia, hundreds of thousands of people lost their jobs; their livelihoods. These catastrophes broke our country's heart. Fact: Investing in social and affordable housing supports the most vulnerable Australians, including those experiencing or facing homelessness and rising domestic violence, while aiding economic recovery. 5,000 additional units of social and affordable housing in NSW would cost $1.88 billion in 2020-21 and would support 18,000 construction jobs The solution is there - we just need those who have the power to see it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmwB9AsuD9c

22.01.2022 Australians wanting to sponsor their partner so they can stay in the country will forced to undergo a character test - and have the results shared with their partner - before a visa application can be made. The government claims these new changes will protect migrants from domestic and family violence. But domestic and family violence organisations are voicing their concerns the changes changes could actually leave women worse-off by reducing their options to remain in the co...untry. 21.01.2022 The government is stepping in to stop a major funding shortfall for the social sector, especially for community organisations assisting people dealing with family violence, isolation and drug problems with a multimillion dollar commitment to the sector. 20.01.2022 Having a safe home is a basic right. The Redfern Waterloo Aboriginal Affordable Housing Campaign was launched on the 21st of September by the Redfern Waterloo Alliance of Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and Allies, taking action on making housing affordable. 20.01.2022 Recent international research indicates that people who have significant problems with their gambling are more likely than people without gambling problems to be the victims and perpetrators of family violence. Although less than 1% of Australians have issues with gambling, for each person with significant gambling issues, around 7.3 ‘significant others’ are affected. Impaired family relationships, emotional problems and financial difficulties are some of the most common eff...ects on family members of people with gambling problems. We know DFV is already a problem in our communities, and the research has shown that while there is a clear link between problem gambling and intimate partner violence, children, parents and grandparents are also the victims of violence perpetrated by those with significant gambling problems. 19.01.2022 Australia's increasing rates of homelessness is estimated to cost the country between $218 million and $445 million each year, because of higher health and social service costs. The construction of more social housing will generate jobs while addressing much needed social and affordable housing. Now is the time to invest in social housing both to relieve pressure on those living in housing stress and to help stimulate the economy, especially given worse affordability for those renting at the lower end of the market. #EverybodysHome

18.01.2022 Change is on the horizon! DVNSW welcomes plans by the NSW Government to establish a Parliamentary Joint Committee to hold a public inquiry into coercive control. NSW Attorney General and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence Mark Speakman announced this morning he has also issued a comprehensive Discussion Paper on coercive control to help guide discussion on the issue.... DVNSW is looking forward to contributing to the discussion, and ensuring every voice is heard - including the DVNSW Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Steering Group and multicultural service partners. We need to support our community partners and our frontline workers recognise, understand and respond to cases of coercive control. We need to reform the system, as well as the law.

17.01.2022 This year is like no other. Even before COVID-19 hit, violence against women and girls had reached pandemic proportions. Globally, 243 million women and girls were abused by an intimate partner in the past year. Meanwhile, less than 40% of women who experience violence report it or seek help. A survey of specialists at 34 community services across NSW earlier in the year found rising rates of women experiencing domestic violence since the onset of the pandemic, with more tha...n 85% recording an increase in the complexity of client cases. 17.01.2022 Incredible work by the Harman Foundation, as they launch a 24-hour helpline for migrant women experiencing domestic and family violence in Australia. Advocates for domestic and family violence survivors have long voiced concerns that temporary visa holders are particularly vulnerable as they do not have access to key health and social services such as Medicare and Centrelink. The Federal Government has agreed to lift base funding in Services Australia grants to cover the costs for equal pay wages won by Australian Services Union members. This means they have recognised community sector jobs are important and need to be protected. From 1 July 2021, the Federal Government has committed to more than $44million per year to lift base funding in Department of Social Services to cover the Equal Remuneration Order for Equal... Pay. 04.01.2022 In Australia, there are more than 3.24 million people or 13.6% of the population living below the poverty line. That includes 774,000 children, or more than 1 in 6. On the 26th June, nearly 659,000 people in NSW and (and approximately 290,000 children) were supported by the Coronavirus Supplement. Cutting $150 from the payment would mean a loss of $100m per week to the NSW economy. ... No one can afford this - not our country or those who inhabit it. 01.01.2022 The federal government’s plan to force people seeking a partner visa to learn English could leave them without a safety net from family violence despite, claims that the measure is aimed at protecting women. The government stated in last week's budget announcement that from late 2021 it would require partner visa applicants applying for permanency to have made reasonable efforts to learn English. The same test would apply to their permanent resident sponsors. In a 2017 stud...y of family violence involving visa holders, it was found perpetrators often used the visa status to control their victims. Women on temporary partner visas have access to financial support, housing support and income while their application is being processed, but those on student visas or other visas would not have the same safety net.
