19.01.2022 Another Article about Scammers written by - Nathan Hondros, Mandurah Mail, be very careful!!!!! it so easy to get scammed. A manager of a Mandurah grocery store has spoken out about his concerns seniors in Mandurah are falling for a phone scam in which criminals pretending to be from Centrelink ask them to buy hundreds of dollars worth of iTunes cards to avoid losing their pensions. Ben Williams, from Woolworth's Mandurah foreshore store, said two older people had each tried ...to buy $400 worth of the vouchers to mail to scammers on Monday. Ben Williams, from Woolworths in Mandurah, is worried about seniors falling for online phone scams. But luckily he managed to convince both to go across the road to Centrelink before parting with their hard-earned cash. "These people do make it sound very legitimate and they give you a reference number and a number to call," Mr Williams said. "Most older people are a little bit wary about losing their Centrelink payments. "The one thing the last gentleman told me was that they are being informed not to mention that it's a Centrelink payment, because Woolworths or Coles will put a fee on top for that, which is completely untrue so they're not mentioning it to our checkout operators." Mr Williams said the scammers also pretended to be from other companies, such as Telstra. "I had a Telstra one to the value of $600, that was probably a month ago, but after the two in one day, I thought I better contact someone to see if we can get the word out there," he said. "And $400 a go for pensioners is a lot of money. "I'd hate for it to happen to my grandparents or even my parents, or anyone." Acting Consumer Protection Commissioner David Hillyard warned Mandurah residents about the phone scammers, who are usually from overseas, and highlighted the new trend of victims paying the scammers with iTunes gift cards. "We realise a lot of people will be surprised to hear that a scam victim thinks you can pay with iTunes gift cards but I'd ask you to just take a step back and put yourself in the shoes of a person who is perhaps not tech savvy, lacks knowledge of modern payment methods and whose gut reaction is to comply with requests from anyone in a position of authority," he said. He said residents who received urgent, aggressive calls threatening arrest or legal action should not be afraid, but instead should call Consumer Protection's ScamNet on 1300 30 40 54. See more

17.01.2022 The apps of Australia's biggest banks are open to attack from a new malware virus. The virus attacks Android devices and can steal the login credentials of mobile banking users, even bypassing two-factor authentication. Westpac, Bendigo Bank, Commonwealth Bank, St. George Bank, National Australia Bank, Bankwest, ME Bank, ANZ Bank are among those said to be targeted. The malware has been discovered ESET security systems which said in a statement that up to 20 major banks have ...been targeted In a statement, ESET said the malware, detected as Android/Spy.Agent.SI, presents victims with a fake version of the login screen of their banking application and locks the screen until they enter their username and password. "Using the stolen credentials, the thieves can then log in to the victim’s account remotely and transfer money out," Lukas Štefanko, ESET malware researcher said. "They can even get the malware to send them all of the SMS text messages received by the infected device, and remove these. "This allows SMS-based two-factor authentication of fraudulent transactions to be bypassed, without raising the suspicions of the device’s owner. "The Trojan spreads as an imitation of Flash Player application. "After being downloaded and installed, the app requests device administrator rights, to protect itself from being easily uninstalled. "After that, the malware checks if any target banking applications are installed. "If so, it receives fake login screens for each banking app from its command and control server. "Once the victim launches a banking app, a fake login screen appears over the top of the legitimate app, leaving the screen locked until the victim submits their banking credentials." Banks in Australia, New Zealand and Turkey have been targeted. HOW TO REMOVE THE MALWARE welivesecurity.com says that those who believe they are infected by the malware, can remove it from the device by first decommissioning administrator rights for the app by going to Settings > Security > Device administrators > Flash Player > Deactivate and then ignore the bogus alert and chooses OK. The user is then able to uninstall the malware via Settings -> Apps/Application manager -> Flash Player -> Uninstall

03.01.2022 I'd like to make you aware of a current phone scam. The scam involves a caller posing as an employee of a large telco, utility provider or computer company. The caller will usually advise they are calling you because your PC has malicious software, help is needed to catch a criminal, or to recover an outstanding debt owed to a government body. Callers may become quite aggressive, or threaten you with prosecution, if you do not comply with their request. I strongly recommend y...ou simply hang up if you receive this type of call. If you believe the call was legitimate, we recommend you return the call to the company on a trusted number found in the yellow pages or on the company's website. How this type of scam works: 1. The caller will generally ask you to install a piece of software onto your PC. The technical name is 'remote access software' and this software allows information, or even control of your computer to be shared remotely with another user. Once the software is installed, the other user may attempt to control your computer without your permission or knowledge. 2. The caller will ask you to sign into your online banking to check your account balances, return deposited funds, pay a fee for their service or even purchase gifts cards. At this point you may not know the caller is controlling your computer. 3. You will now have an increased balance in your transaction account, giving the false impression that a deposit has been made. Callers will generally ask you to return these via online banking, a money transfer agent or in cash. 4. Before making any payments or returning funds to the caller by online banking, credit card or in cash, please thoroughly check all of your account transactions, including your credit cards. In reported cases of these scams, customers have had funds transferred unknowingly between their own accounts by the caller. What should I do? Share information about these types of scams with your friends and family, especially those who may be more vulnerable to this type of crime. Stop and consider the caller's request - would the company which has contacted me ask me to do this? It's OK to ask for a second opinion from a friend or family member if someone contacts you unexpectedly, especially when the caller asks you to keep this a secret from anyone.
