22.01.2022 Nice to (somewhat reluctantly) take the muffling pads off my practice rig at home today for the first time in over four years. I swore when we moved here that Id not disturb the peace and tranquility of this beautiful neighborhood with my incessant playing as I was going to happily wait until we rebuild our garage as a soundproof studio. I simply cant be without the *sound* of it any longer though as thats what I LOVE about it the most! 20.01.2022 What better way to celebrate 20 years as a Sonor artist than with the arrival of my new special order Vintage Series drumset in the gorgeous Vintage Natural finish?! Im absolutely smitten!!! The set is in two parts that share a 14 x 5 3/4 snare drum: Part 1:... 10 x 8, 12 x 8, 14 x 12, 16 x 14, 20 x 14. Part 2: 12 x 8 (actually, you see a 10 x 8 here as I got carried away and accidentally ordered two 10 toms instead of two 12 - the second 12 is on its way), 14 x 12, 18 x 14. The simplicity of sleek design of the lugs and mounting hardware is particularly appealing. The sound is to die for! The lovely SuperProfil counterhoops as well as the beech shells with rounded edges makes for a very smooth, warm, dry time that doesnt get in the way of the music. 02.01.2022 So nice to play a live gig to a live (socially distanced) audience today for Michael’s party with Elysian Fields in the beautiful Mosman Art Gallery. It’s been over six months since I last did this, and this is the only one that didn’t get cancelled. I’m now more aware than ever that the exchange that goes on between a live audience and the rapport of the musicians playing the music brings the fullness of dimensionality to what it means to be a professional creative musician ...in this world. Whilst I’ve been practicing every day to keep my chops up, none of what happened today could ever be reproduced merely in the practice room. 02.01.2022 Playing along with Drowsy Maggie by the US Army Old Guard Drum & Fife Corps. This is the first time Ive played these drums in four months and two days, and the first time I played this piece on unmuffled drums. I learned this piece during isolation on practice pads, but I just had to get out and *hear* it on the drums yesterday. Whilst I wish I couldve done a better job in the limited time I had, Im glad for the new skills that came in learning to play this piece. I firs...t heard the Old Guard around Christmas time in 2019, and when the world went into lockdown, I decided to try and learn the snare drum and bass drum parts as one seated player. Some tricky stickings and pedallings here - especially in combination! Sorry ATO Mark Reilly as Im sure my matched concert snare grip doesnt quite cut it, but thats the way I play I guess, and Im grateful for the tremendous amounts of inspiration Ive gotten from you since finding out about you and your flawlessly brilliant playing! This piece just sounded so funky when I first heard it, I simply had to learn it. Looking forward to a) getting better at it (Im treating this as a work in progress), as well as b) learning some more of their amazing repertoire!
